Description

Eclipse Safari is your comprehensive interactive guide to the August 21 2017 Total Solar Eclipse of the Sun, visible along a narrow path spanning the USA from the West coast to the East coast. It's a free app developed by the makers of the award-winning SkySafari 5 astronomy app in collaboration with Space.com, the premier source of eclipse and space news.

Here is what you can do with Eclipse Safari:

Countdown Timer: Count down to when the moon’s shadow makes landfall on the West coast of the United States - down to the second - with the Eclipse Countdown clock. During the eclipse, the countdown clock dynamically updates to reveal which state the shadow is in and how long it will take to reach your location.

Space.com Eclipse News: Eclipse news and in-depth articles from Space.com, the leader in astronomy and space news.

Interactive Eclipse Map: Find the best location to observe the eclipse. Select a location on the map to retrieve accurate eclipse event times for any location on Earth.

Eclipse Simulator: Simulate the eclipse from your location or any location on the Earth. A time slider lets you manipulate time and simulate the eclipse from start to end.

Shadow Tracker: Enter Space View and watch the moon’s shadow travel across the face of the Earth.

Live Eclipse Updates: Breaking news on the eclipse from all over the internet.

Eclipse Viewing Guide: A comprehensive viewing and safety guide to the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. We have you covered with everything you need to know in order to get the best eclipse experience.

Eclipse Live Stream: On eclipse day, watch a live stream of the eclipse as it happens.

Weather Forecast: 2-day forecast for any location in the U.S.

Oppressed Bia,
Clunky app, map function nearly useless
While the concept is great, the interactive map is trash.
The location search function might find the location, but does not drop a pin, which is the whole point with how this map works. If my current location is 100 miles away from the path of totality and I want to check if a specific address is located within the path, I can't.
The map is too small within the app. It covers less than 1/3 of the screen and still requires pinching and finger scrolling to move around. Oops, I dropped a pin 1000 miles away from where I'm planning to be.
The tiny map lacks details such as road names.
I can't even speak to the quality of the rest of the app since the interactive map is so awful, but it looks like it's just a copy of a (not great looking) website.
AlVitale,
What is wrong with map location
Using the search function bar I cannot get the app to successfully "find "a location; before the map/app upgrade earlier today, the functionality was great. Any thoughts?
idonotwanttohaveanickname,
Excellent Eclipse App
This is an excellent eclipse app. You can drop pins on a location and see the total eclipse duration, when the eclipse starts, the start of totality, maximum eclipse, the end of totality and the end of the eclipse. A nice addition would be a button to get you the current weather for where you put your pin or a button to get a weather forecast for where you put your pin. The simulations of the eclipse from where you dropped your pin are nice. It would be good if the simulation could be saved or watched as a movie. This app will help me set up my intervalometer to take pictures of the eclipse. Let’s hope we have clear skies.
Sylvester the odd,
Great and useful app
I'm very impressed with this app. The interactive map lets you figure out where the best spot to observe the eclipse is. Even if you can't make it into the region of totality, it will show you what the eclipse will look like from your location.

Lots of general information about the eclipse. Highly recommended.
Ancient Astronomer,
Was great app, but suddenly does not function
Until today the app functioned well. Today the search function does not work. Every location I've entered today comes up "not found", even Columbus, OH. It also seems very slow in starting up. I've deleted the app and reinstalled with no change.
MarioHummer,
Great app
A very good app for preparing for the eclipse. For the photography lovers it would be fantastic to have a small bar on the side or bottom of the interactive map with the number of degrees it represents (which would change as one zooms in or out). Congrats on a job well done.
SweetMusic1,
Start and Stop times are off
After updating my IOS to latest version, I notice that the eclipse times are off by a number of hours. Still a useful app, but the time function needs to be fixed. (Yes, I uninstalled and reinstalled)
Brookeely,
Didn't work during eclipse time, useless
I downloaded this app to watch the eclipse with my family. I used it in the days leading up to the eclipse however when we wanted to use the app during the eclipse the site was bogged down and we were unable to use it. Overall concept was okay, interactive map wasn't great. For a free app it was okay, just didn't serve any purpose when it came down to needing it.
VAXdude,
Pretty Cool
I like the interactive eclipse map, but the background is tan and the sun image is yellow. It's VERY difficult to see where the blue moon transits the image of the sun. A better color contrast between the background and the sun would be appreciated.
Anticrombie,
Not what I would call 'feature rich'
The app would probably be great if you did two things:
1. Pay for the upgrade, or
2. Don't use it for a solar eclipse

It would seem that their servers are having trouble scaling up for the user load, and as of this instance (1 hour before the eclipse), is not retrieving any data. You would think an app that would be used one in a decade would work during the only time it will be used.

Oh well, guess I'll wait another 99 years to try out the app again after they fix their issues.
