jum k,
AMAZING
I am almost 50 and I remember as a kid quite often hearing, “ Look it up yourself in the dictionary and you will never forget it !”. Now enter the “Google Smart Age”, as I like to call it. I work with a lot of 20 somethings .... ask them anything... most of them literally have to “ google it”, to give you most answers. I asked this college kid at work the other day , the definition of “Hypocrite”.....he googled it came back with a simple definition. Then I showed him this site and we dug into that word and the roots of it , usage in language etc.... a few hours later this kid actually responded “ Wow... this site is Amazing... I feel as if I have the knowledge of this one word as good as my PHD English Teacher ... when I recently had a discussion with her about the word in class”..... what happened in our society over the last 40+ years not teaching kids how to Think !!!!... just an AWESOME SITE !!!

Not compatible with Dark Mode
First, bug report. When the dark mode is on, I won’t be able to see the texts in the search list because they are white. I can’t see the words in my bookmark list either for the same reason. The background should not be so bright in dark mode.

The content is great. The app is simple and intuitive, even though the subscription fee is too high in my opinion, so I’m not considering paying for it. Merriam-Webster charges $6 for each year. The content is already impressive, and the app is well designed. Please consider a one-time payment option. I will be happy to pay for it if that’s provided.
Bomchickalowwow,
A Wonderful Tool For a Biblical Interpretation!!!
The Bible was written long ago. But the spirit behind the book. The spirit of God himself who used these men to bring forth his word. Buried deep hidden truths in parables and sayings that can only be discovered, When trying to understand the meaning for why certain words were used in different context.

I started off with the KJV version but became lazy and slowly migrated to the NLT version over some years. Etymonline breaks down words to there root meaning so this tool I think would be ideal for anyone trying to gain a better interpretation of the word of God and who prefers the KJV but still has difficulty interpreting scripture. This app is a Gem!!

honorable appellation
outstanding (adj.)

1610s, "projecting, prominent, detached," from out- + standing (adj.) "having an erect position, upright." Figurative sense of "conspicuous, striking" is recorded from 1830. Meaning "unpaid, unsettled" is from 1797. The verb outstand is attested in 16c. as "endure successfully, hold out against," now obsolete; the intransitive sense of "to project outward from the main body, stand out prominently" is by 1755 and probably is a back-formation from outstanding. Earlier were outstonden "to stand up" (mid-13c.); outstonding (verbal noun) "a prominence or protuberance" (early 15c.), but these seem not to have survived Middle English. Related: Outstandingly.

informative (adj.)

1650s, "instructive, didactic," from Medieval Latin informativus, from Latin informatus, past participle of informare "to train, instruct, educate" (see inform). In Middle English, the same word meant "formative, shaping, plastic, having power to form or animate" (late 14c.). Related: Informatively.

swell (adj.)

"fashionably dressed or equipped," 1810, from swell (n.) in the "stylish person" sense. As "good, excellent," by 1897; as a stand-alone expression of satisfaction it is recorded from 1930 in American English.

This has been an indispensable resource for my language, medical, biology and physiology science courses. The international language of science is Latin so studying the historical breakdown of modern language gives a personality to unfamiliar words which makes them not only more memorable but it also makes the roots easier to recognize in new unfamiliar words, therefore expanding my comprehension vocabulary exponentially. I have been a student for several years and searched high and low for etymology resources and this is by far the most accurate, useful, and thorough site and app available. Please keep up the great work. I am your biggest fan!
Hud.Pepper,
I love this app
I almost never write reviews, but with the amount that I have used this app combined with its positive impact on me, I feel compelled to in this case.

This dictionary provides a gateway to deeper understanding of language, not only by finding the roots of words, but by finding the root connections to other words. Just type *(root) and you can find out all the words that are connected to that (root).

It has been so great that I’ve even considered getting a dedicated Proto-Indo European textbook to go further. I hope they continue to build and develop this resource. It really is useful. Highly recommend.

POWER & PROTECTION
About 1 1/2 years ago I discovered Etymonline and my life has not been the same. The Holy Bible (Hosea 4:6) our Heavenly Father states that, “My people suffer for the lack of knowledge”, our inability to know the root of most words creates a type of secret bondage. When you can discover the right concept you have the ability to free your mind. By looking up words and gaining a historical origin I have been able to live a life of wisdom. Most of the English words within our society that we define are depreciated because of our lack of historical perspective.
Thomas Hannahan,
Get this app!
The search is fast and you cannot easily find this information while clumsily searching google. All the information is there to satisfy your curiosity. I particularly like the home page which has roots that are present in many words which allow you to greatly expand your vocabulary by learning the component roots of words. This way when you come across an unfamiliar word like pernicious you know that the roots per= for, toward and nec= death which gives you a good idea of what the word means. I think expanding your vocabulary in this way is great. Thanks!
Jay Eph,
Move forward by falling back
The future is built by the past and remembrance leads to real progress. The only complaint I have is that more people have never heard of the idea that the language we take for granted actually came from people before us who were in most cases more nuanced in their understanding and verbal descriptions than we are. Please download and use this app (try and use it MORE than your current obscurantist dictionary) in order to actually move something forward in the world!

Fantastic resource: full of insights!
I stumbled upon Etymonline almost 20 years ago and continue to be delighted in the insights into our common linguistic heritage, which reveals so much about our history and culture. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised to find it in the App Store, where the experience is even better! Download, and let your mind grow with each entry you uncover, like an archaeologist perusing a museum and seeing connections between the artifacts on display that are hidden to the average observer. Good luck, Indy!
