Description

Queryable - An open-source, offline semantic photo album search tool.

With Queryable, you can search for photos in your albums using text descriptions like "photos of our gathering," "kite in blue sky," "dog, girl, and flower," or even emotions depicted in the photo.

1. What's the highlights ?
- You can use complex & long descriptions to search photos, rather than object keywords.
- Open source, offline, and operates without network. This means you don't have to expose your photo album privacy to anyone.

2. How to use Queryable ?
The first time you use Queryable, it will build an index of all your photos, which takes a few minutes, depending on the number of photos you have, this step is performed only once. After that, you can start searching for anything you want. When you have new photos, you can manually update the index to make them searchable.

3. Are there any privacy or security issues?
Queryable values your privacy. Therefore it is designed to be totally offline and will never request your network access, thereby avoiding any privacy issues. (You can turn off its network permissions if you wish.)
- update: for version>=1.1.2, Queryable now gives users the option to choose whether to use wireless data to fetch photos from iCloud. This feature is not mandatory.

As a Chinese indie developer who values privacy, it is very difficult to promote product in English speaking regions. But luckily, when it comes to this app, you don't have to believe me, you can trust science.

4. Any requirements for the iPhone model?
Queryable runs CoreML locally, which means if your iPhone does not support CoreML, you can't use it.
The limitations are:
* iOS 16.0 or above
* Not tested on iPad or MacOS yet.

5. Issues with iClould
Since it cannot connect to a network, Queryable can only use the cache of the low-definition versions of your local Photos albums if you do NOT allows it connectes to network. This does not affect search accuracy, except that you cannot view the original image in the search results.

6. What if it crashes when building an index ?
Make sure you're iOS 16.0, iPhone 11 or above. Turn off low battery mode and kill the memory-hungry app, then try building the index again.

Mustache Emperor,
Way better than iOS search
The UI is very simple and will benefit from some polish, but this works perfectly on my 14 Pro. Make sure to let the index complete the first time you run the app.

The search quality is really impressive. I can find every Simpsons meme in my saved photos, every picture I’ve ever taken at an art museum, every picture I’ve taken of a neon sign, every selfie I took with my old roommate at a bar. This really feels like the future. Big thanks to the dev, I really appreciate having this.
Plasmag,
Extremely useful
I bought this because I was interested in the technology (read about it on HN) but this app has been surprisingly useful. I have a lot of photos on my phone, and it’s great to be able to find photos containing an object. I use it about once every two weeks. I wish the native Photos search was this good. I also appreciate that all of the machine learning is done on device in a privacy preserving way. Apple should buy this app.
Mjw285,
Really great local photo search
This app is exactly what I’ve been looking for to search through my 20,000-photo library. Often I have a specific photo I’ve taken in my mind, but I don’t remember when. This app lets me search for it even on the subway. With the recent support for image similarity search, this is a must-buy for anyone who wants good tools to sort through their photos.
kylehotchkiss,
Interesting AI experiment
Really cool to see what a more refined image search implementation can look like on apple products. This app on its own seems more like a demonstration of the tech to me than a utility I’ll find myself using regularly but I’m going to keep it for those times when photos search fails me. I hope apple ultimately decides to build their search around this tech and keep their models updated so that everybody can benefit from better search.

Thanks to the developer for showing us a practical application of AI!
Mkendieo,
Unusable - Crashes Immediately 🙁
This looked like an interesting app and I liked that the developer took the time to respond to reviews so I installed on my iPad.

It took about over an hour for the app to index all my 4,200 photos. If I tried using my iPad while it indexed the photos the process stopped and I had to restart once again. 🥱

Once finished I tried a simple search, the app crashed immediately. I restarted the app and tried a dozen more times and got the same results. 🙁

So basically I have lost several hours of my life on this non-functioning app and now I’m concerned that now all my photos have been accessed that they may have been uploaded and are out there for the world to see. 😬

Maybe the developer is working on the bugs but for now it’s a no-go for me.

Update: The developer sent a response asking did I read the description before downloading? Suggestions the chip on my iPad is not new enough, even though it runs every other app with no issues whatsoever.
pilotneko,
Nice utility app
Saw on HackerNews and thought I would give it a shot. I am on an iPhone 12 Pro and it maybe took 30 seconds to index roughly 2,200 images. The ability to search for a described scene is fast and performs well. I had some false negatives, but the result set always had the photo I was describing in it. Are the photos ordered by similarity to the query? It would be nice to order results by timestamp or filter by location.
tux.spb,
Buy if you want search photos with text prompt.
Great app for searching photos. The only thing that’s missing is multiple select. Please add this feature. Users will be able to search and remove unwanted photos from the library much faster than with stock photos app.
Trolllololol,
Awesome
Read about this on HN.

Love that it doesn’t require network privileges.

Works well on my iPhone 13. Wish that I could swipe left and right afyer selecting a photo from search, but hopefully this gets resolved in future!
opposablebrain,
Great app — works as advertised.
I love this app. Works great on mac/iOS. Fast and accurate. I also appreciate the offline design. Thank you for caring about our privacy.

If I could ask for a feature, it would to be work with arbitrary folders on MacOS (not just the photos library).

Either way, thank you.
Bhgguhghgyyhhf,
Fantastic but UI could be better!
Improvements
- hard to look at each image (can’t swipe left or right, must tap each image)
- no way to open the image in the photos app after finding it
- no way to share the image from the app
- can’t zoom in

Mostly just stuff centered around the image viewer. There should be some open-source library you can use for this.

Best of luck, and thank you
