Description

More than just a game, First Words Animals is a powerful educational tool for the toddlers and kids in your life. It provides hours of fun, laughter and learning.

If your child is old enough to ask for your phone, they're old enough for First Words Animals!

* Now with French, German, Japanese, Spanish, plus British and American English *

First Words Animals will help your child:

* Develop fine motor skills
* Learn to recognize and match letters
* Learn the names of letters
* Learn the sounds English letters make (phonics)
* Learn how to spell words

Of course, they won't just be learning, they'll also be laughing and having fun with 45 of their favorite animal friends, beautifully illustrated and matched with entertaining animal sounds.

First Words Animals is toddler-tested and approved, with a user-interface designed specifically for the littlest of fingers. More than just a game, it is a sophisticated learning tool that engages your child, encourages exploration, and helps them begin building a deep understanding of the relationships between letters and words.

A variety of options let you adjust the difficulty level to match the abilities of your younger or older kids. In addition to English, your child can now learn the names of their favorite animals in French, German, Japanese and Spanish.

Kids can play First Words by themselves, but they also enjoy bringing their grownups along, talking about the animals, saying the names of the letters, and watching the animals spin around and sound off.

If your child is old enough to ask for your phone, they're old enough for First Words Animals!

Great ABCs app for young kids
I downloaded this app a few days ago, and my daughter hasn't stopped playing with it since. I've had my iPad for a few months now, but did not see as much learning potential on it as this app brought out. I am shocked at how quickly she is growing her character/letter recognition, and how much fun she is having with it. Up to this point we were using flashcards, and progress has been very slow to non-existent. She's good as singing the ABC song, but was not connecting the sounds to the visuals. I'm not here to say this is the next gen in learning tools, but I can honestly say we've seen progress with this specific app. Simple but focused and fun. I (we) highly recommend!
TwoBits,
Excellent drill for early reading skills
Simple to use. Pronunciation is very clear, and good volume. Whenever a letter is touched, its name is pronounced. When the word is correctly spelled, its spelling is recited; then the word is pronounced. Then the animal's sound is played back.

Pronouncing the animal sounds after a successful spelling is a very strong motivator. Some of the animal sounds are clearly authentic. Some clearly are not. (The frog saying "ribbit, ribbit" comes to mind.) The fake sounds are a bit disappointing.

The illustrations are very inviting (though not entirely realistic). Animation of the illustrations is not realistic. (After a successful spelling, the animal twirls and gets larger. None do more than that.)

There are five options available to tailor the app's difficulty. (See screenshots.) The "Get More Words" selection just takes you to a screen describing the other apps in the series. The "Send Us Feedback" selection presents you with a communications form to fill out, which presumably you can use to get support, as well as just commenting on the app.

This series of apps is the best I've seen in the App Store for early reading skills. (But admittedly, I haven't looked at all that many.)
freccles,
It's OK, not GREAT
I had downloaded the free sample for my 2- and 5-year-old kids and decided to upgrade to the paid version. The 2-yr-old is more interested in this than his older sister, but they do both play with it. It's definitely helping my 2-yr old learn the letter names and helping him realize that words are made up of letters. He's also becoming quite adept at "dragging" items across the iPad screen and matching letters to eachother. Both of my kids are in Montessori programs and they learn the sounds of the letters first, not the names of the letters. So, for us, the drawback is that when the child touches the letters to drag them into place, it's the name of the letter rather than the sound of the letter that he/she hears. Also, there doesn't seem to be a progression from easy to hard words -- it's all random. And, there's no option to hide the spelling of the words, so the child never has to spell the words on his/her own.
EZOffices,
Great tool for kids
This application was well received by my young kids. Most interestingly, I felt it gave the youngest kids finger manipulation practice. Room for improvement - when the wrong letter is place in the box, it shouldn't just stay there, it should "bounce"
back out or something. I like that the applications shows motion and provides sound as feedback when the puzzle is solved correctly. I would ask for MORE WORDS as my kids got through the entire collection in less than 15 minutes.
Keep up the good work; looking for updated version.
AjitaWhite,
Well-made, entertaining, educational!
This is one of the best chuldren's apps I have seen. Way better than the popular Parents Magazine app (sorry, but it's true). A number of apps out there are awful, but this one is so well-made! The little animals are cute, and it's so intuitive that my 23-month-old uses it without ever needing any help from me. I love the way it says each letter as she drags it, and then it spells out the word when it's complete, and *then* says the word. (And the guy speaking doesn't sound like a robot, like in some of the other apps.) I'm very impressed, and my daughter loves to play this app!
Katwoman007,
In my top list of toddler apps
This animal spelling game is really fun for my little boy, who turns 3 in a couple months. Once I showed him how to drag the letters to their spaces (instead of clicking on them over and over again to repeat E! E! E! H! E! E! E! E!), he immediately grasped the concept and has been playing ever since -- not like an action-packed game, but then again, it's not meant to be. I like this app's graphics and sound quality, and most of all that it presents spelling in a simple way that my little boy can easily participate in. It's helped him learn the letters he was having a tough time with, too.
