ktspence,
Lots to love but...
Update: it works well on my iPad Mini so I will upgrade from one star to three.

I love the searchable dictionary, tone color characters (add on), print/PDF option (add on), and audio (add on). I even bought the HSK1 add on Flashcards pack. All together I spent 28 dollars to get the tools I needed to study. It was well worth it for an interactive study tool that I could customize for my needs. The only problem is that after I bought the HSK pack, the app crashed. It would not work at all and crashed each time I tried to open the flash decks (they were working prior to that add on). I have emailed the company and would love to update this review with a positive outcome.
Here’s to being hopeful...
Jane Emma,
Audio????
UPDATE: WHERE IS THE AUDIO. It’s gone. Try to restore, and it’s not there. Spent $10 for nothing!!!!! Felt cheated.

Old review:
I'd downloaded this app for a long time and haven't been using it till recently when I'm willing to part $10 for in-app-purchase pronunciation feature. Now, this is my favorite app for learning Chinese (even though I still miss my $10).

One star off for...

A) Some words do not have the most common definitions. (Easy work around by adding ur own definition.)

B) No upgrade since Dec 2011. I haven't found any bugs yet... But since iOS 6 is out I... I just want an upgrade to know that this app is still supported by an existing company/individual.

E) Wish it comes with flashcard sets of most common 5000 words or sets of hsk words level 1-5. But I do find that the process of creating ur own flashcard sets (looking up the words and double check the definitions) is part of learning Chinese.

D) I'm still unclear as to how and in what order the flashcards are shown in. Wish there is more than just two methods and that there is explanation / description for individual method.... So exactly what does the color on the left side of the word in the flashcard list means???
zlzenith,
A Few Issues, But a Decent Flashcard App
First, of course, this app is already a good deal considering it's free and functional. The built-in dictionary makes assembling my weekly flash cards for class very easy, even if it is not the most inclusive dictionary out there. However, I encountered a small glitch when adding dictionary entries to my cards occasionally when it would mistake the one I was trying to add with one I had just added. This is not too troublesome, though.

The main downside with this app is the limited utility I get from the "study" option. It constantly repeats 3 or 4 flash cards from any one set almost indefinitely at times. Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to control the format in which the cards are displayed; in other words, there is no "show definition only" setting, etc.

Overall, however, this is reasonably useful app for studying Chinese vocabulary.
Myheartsnotinit,
Please fix it!
I’m giving this app five stars because it is really an excellent app, and I use it every day in China. It has seriously saved my life for learning chinese and I recommend it to all my friends learning chinese there. But it crashes constantly on my iPad! Please fix the bugs, it’s such a good app otherwise 😣
Cdqt,
Was excellent but doesn't work now
I can't get the program to stay open.i haven't used it in a while. So when it didn't stay open, I updated it. But it still won't stay open.
MissJubilee,
Needs Pinyin flashcards
I love that this app lets me build custom word lists and uses my results to modify how often words show up when studying, but without making the ones I know once disappear entirely. Also the way it takes numbers next to words and turns them into properly-marked tones. So far I only have one (BIG!) problem with it and one question.

I like learning characters but my main goal is to SPEAK and understand spoken Mandarin, so it would be MUCH more useful to have the pinyin on one side of the flash card instead of the characters. Yes I want to read someday if I live here longer but for now having the characters instead of Pinyin test me when I study is wasting my time. I'll be looking for an app that has this feature.

My question is, if I buy the colors add-on, can I customize them? I already use colors for tones sometimes and they're not the same as the colors in the photo so I won't buy it if it'll just confuse me! Pleco lets me customize them (and for free, though there are plenty of other expensive add-ons with that powerful app).

Awesome app!
This is the best app I have seen for Chinese flashcards. You can select just the words you are studying instead of having pre-made decks of words that won't help you in class. I upgraded so that I could hear each word also ($9.99). For some reason it only works on my iPhone and not on the iPad (no speaker, won't play on the iPad, couldn't purchase the upgrade on the iPad.) Other than that I would give it 5 stars. Also, there is a feature where you can email your flashcards list which is fantastic. You can send your list to another iPod, or email it to a classmate who has the app. This will be a huge help for me and will reduce a lot of work trying to make flashcards.
TheFourthWarner,
Good, but the last update screwed me over
I've used this app for a year or so now, and it's great.
Only problem is, the last update (The one from today, which is June 23rd 2014) screwed me over. I use the Traditional Characters, but certain characters aren't showing up on the flashcard in that setting (i.e. 分,哦, et cetera). I also can't change the settings (It's not on my settings app or on Flashonary's app itself) and the text is now too small for traditional characters, but if I put it back to simplified everything's normal again.
Please fix it?
CeriKitty,
Could not do without it.
I got this app to help me look up words for my mandarin language class (at the time I was a complete beginner). I didn't look to closely at it at the time, and didn't realize it had flash cards also. When I discovered them, I was very very happy!

The app dictionary contents are very thorough and comprehensive, and is very easy to search and navigate.

The flash cards are a godsend, and make learning the characters (not just the pinyin) much simpler! The way they are results prioritized makes them even more efficient, as is being able to select folders you wish to include. Meaning you can revise previous "lessons" at the same time as learning new ones. I also love that you are able to create your own custom flash cards from scratch very easily. This is a very useful feature!

Overal, this app is one I recommend wholeheartedly to any language student. If it was hard copy, I'd say to keep it with your textbook!
stepmcnul,
Excellent investment
I have read some of the other reviews and, yes, there are a few extra things I would like to see but it looks like they are coming. All in all though, for the price, this is a fantastic app and a great tool in learning hanzi. I have created my own lists to suit the area of study I am learning and find this an invaluable aid. Definitely one of the most used apps I have bought.
