Description

Flyskyhy forms your flight instrument during flight and shows all information you need for that. You get the normal data like altitude, climb rate, ground speed, and glide angle. But it also calculates and shows the current wind direction and strength, very important for your safety.

A moving and rotating map shows your current flying position and flight trail. It indicates where you have gone up (in a thermal), and where you have had faster than normal decline. With that, you can easily find back that thermal that you lost. The map also shows the nearest known landing spots, and whether they are reachable by normal glide, given your current altitude and wind direction.

Integration with Bluetooth varios SensBox, FlyNet, GoFly iPico, XC-Tracer, BlueFlyVario, or SkyDrop gives accurate altitude and lift information. That turns your iPhone into an full-fletched GPS-vario, including vario tones.

The app makes a full log of your flight, that can be analyzed afterwards. Besides normal data like start and landing positions, duration of flight, and an altitude graph of the flight, Flyskyhy also calculates the scoring distances for you. So you can immediately see whether you have broken that FAI triangle record.

Your live location is reported on livetrack24.com or loctome.com if you desire, so anybody can follow your flight while it is happening. If you are flying together with friends, then their location is shown on your map during your flight. So you never have to wonder anymore whether they are in front of or behind you.

The flight display has multiple screens which are all fully configurable. You can move all elements to other spots, delete and add elements, and resize them.

Through in-app purchases, the app also supports airspaces and waypoints.

The app is optimised for paragliding and hang gliders, but can be used with all kinds of airsports.

Main features during the flight;
• Altitude, climb rate, ground speed, air speed, direction, glide angle and many more
• Wind strength and direction
• Moving map of the flying area
• Spots where you have had lift, great for thermal coring
• Shows whether you can still reach a landing spot with the current altitude and wind
• Live tracking of your flight on livetrack24.com or loctome.com
• Shows live location of your friends during flight

After the flight:
• Full logbook of all your flights
• Basic flight data like start/landing, duration, height difference, distance flown, and many more
• Calculation of 5-points, open triangle, and FAI triangle distances
• Graph of altitude and climb rate
• Signed IGC and KML log files of flights
• Transfer the log to iTunes or send by email
• Upload the flight directly to XContest, ParaglidingForum, DHV-XC, and other Leonardo servers
• Open flight in Google Earth on the iPhone
• Replay the flight and relive it!

By purchasing the Waypoints Extension you get access to:
• A fully zoomable and scrollable map with the waypoints and optimised route. The map also shows start and landing spots, as well as restricted airspaces (with the Airspace Extension)
• Enter new waypoints, either on the map or by specifying the parameters
• Full route support with start time, goal, entry/exit points, etc.
• Many instruments to guide you along the route
• Visible and audible indication when a waypoint has been reached
• Complete waypoints organiser
• Import and export of various waypoint file formats

By purchasing the Airspace Extension you get access to:
• Airspaces of 30 countries
• Display of airspaces on the map with configurable colors and formats
• Display of your vertical position w.r.t. airspaces
• Visible and audible warnings when approaching and entering an airspace
• Shows local airspaces by touching a spot on the map

Note: a live internet connection is required for live tracking of your and your friends locations
Note: continuous GPS and screen usage makes the battery drain faster than normal

Version history

7.3.2
2022-04-22
Bug fix that hopefully solves the startup problems that some of you are struggling with.
7.3.1
2022-04-12
Some reported start-up problems with the previous version. These are hopefully resolved now.
A "GPS Altitude" instrument is now available as part of the XC extension.
And we keep making small improvements to the app.
7.3
2022-03-30
Flyskyhy is now available in Spanish and Portuguese, many thanks to Marco Campazas and Rafael Damiati Ferreira for the translations.

You can now organise your flights in the flight book. They are automatically grouped by year, but you can choose any additional criteria that you like. Make a group for all your long flights, organise them by the glider that you flew and/or keep your tow launches separate from your mountain launches. For each group of flights, the app will automatically calculate total flight time and total distance.

You can also export the flight details of all the flights in a group as a spreadsheet. That enables you to summarise the details yourself with normal spreadsheet tools.
7.2
2021-06-30
Flyskyhy now comes with Italian texts, many thanks to Iacopo Boccalari for the translations!

We continue to enhance the app with improvements and bug fixes. The CPU usage has been reduced, and excessive usage of the CPU in the background has been tackled. Various other small issues are solved.
7.1.1
2021-04-26
- Digifly Air is now supported as Bluetooth vario for lift, altitude, and GPS data.
- The wind indicator is improved further. It works better for cliff soaring, adapts faster to changing winds, and in general indicates a slightly stronger wind than before.
- The glide ratio indicator will respond faster to variations in your glide ratio.
- Generic support has been added for other Bluetooth LE varios

Bug fixes:
- Icons on the status bar in portrait mode will be visible again on all iPhone models with a screen notch.

Map:
The map for planning purposes is now available for everybody, not just those who have purchased the Waypoints extension. The preload tab has been removed, and is replaced by the waypoints list functionality.

Preload:
Unfortunately, Google charges money for downloading maps. Until now, I have paid for your downloads myself, but that is no longer sustainable. Therefore, from now on, you will need a subscription for preloading maps in Flyskyhy. Purchase the subscription in the Settings, like the other extensions.

Preloading a certain area has been made a lot easier, simply tap on the download symbol on the Map screen.

Improvements:
Two bugs have been fixed that could possibly lead to a crash of the app.
6.16
2020-06-19
You can now configure the Lift instrument to show a running average over a longer period. You can set a different averaging period for each Lift instrument, such that you can have both the direct Lift and the average Lift side by side on your dashboard.

A number of small bugs have been fixed as well, among others:
• Https is now the default for uploads to Leonardo servers, with automatic switch to http if https fails.
• Fixed connection problems with FlyTec SensBox

2019-11-12
In this version a work-around for the iOS 13 “open in” bug is added. If Flyskyhy does not appear in the iPhone “Open in” dialogue when opening a waypoints, airspaces extension, or external igc file, you can use this work-around. In that case choose “Save to Files” instead. Then select “On My iPhone” and “Flyskyhy”, and tap “Save” in the top-right corner. Now open Flyskyhy, and a popup should come up asking whether to import the new airspaces or waypoints. New IGC files wil simply appear in the flights list.

This version also has a work-around for the iOS “90 degrees” bug. For some people, the compass heading differed 90 degrees from the real heading due to incorrect compass data in iOS 13 and possibly iOS 12.4. This had also consequences for the indicated direction of the ground speed, wind calculations, and various other issues. To solve the bug, other data in the iPhone is now used, and more rigorously filtering for incorrect data is applied.

During a flight, all sensor data is now logged in a special debug log. The sensor data is kept for the last flight, and can be sent to me through a button at the bottom of the flight details view. Hopefully this will help with future improvement of the sensor data algorithms.

Various other small bugs are fixed as well.

Bugfixes:
• Fix upload to DHV / Leonardo for Tandem flights
• Adapted to ignore accessibility font size settings.
• Fixed bug with airspaces files that are not UTF-8 encoded
• .xctsk files can now have description fields
• Adapted to use specific "Airborne" GPS type introduced by Apple in iOS-12
6.12
2018-10-11
On popular demand, the main addition in this version are obstacles such as power lines and lift cables added to the airspaces data. Currently only obstacles for Switzerland are available, but the planning is to gradually add obstacles for other countries as well. To cater for that, it is now also possible to set different warning preferences for different airspace classes. There is some more choice in colours for airspaces/obstacles as well.
This version also makes it possible to add your own airspaces file. To do that, open the OpenAir file with .txt extension, and the iPhone will ask to import it in Flyskyhy.

Various other additions / fixes:
• Adapted for iOS 12 and the new iPhone models
• Support for XCTrack task file format
• Support for XCTrack QR codes
• Support for reading of GPX routes
• More robust handling of faulty data sent by Bluetooth devices
• Prevent accidental screen editing while in a flight
• Prevent airspaces and take-off / landing sites from disappearing in low memory situations
• Fixed various small bugs
6.11
2018-05-30
••••••••• IMPORTANT •••••••••
Google has changed their contracts for using Google Maps. As a result, Flyskyhy had to be changed. You MUST install this upgrade, otherwise you will no longer be able to see maps in the app after June 11th.
In conjunction with that, the highest resolutions maps will no longer be pre-loaded, in order to limit the potential costs for map loading.
6.10
2018-05-23
This version introduces Skylines.aero as live tracking site, in addition to LiveTrack24 and Loctome.
The app will now calculate the Open Distance (2-point distance) for your flights.

Bugfixes:
• Taking a picture with the iPhone in landscape orientation, will no longer rotate the screen 180 degrees
• You will now get an alert when Bluetooth is switched off
• When editing the screens, releasing a dragged instrument during a page switch will no longer lead to a crash
• The indicated course is now also correct when replaying non-Flyskyhy logs
• The current triangle sector now updates more frequently when replaying a flight
6.9
2018-03-08
On popular demand, a number of improvements to the Waypoints Extension have been added, which makes it even more suited for competitions. Waypoints can now also represent finish lines. And you can earmark a waypoint as End of Speed Section (ESS), which directs the optimised route along the shortest path straight to the waypoint, without considering subsequent waypoints. The original optimised route is kept on the map as a dashed line.

It is now no longer required to restart the app when selecting a new Bluetooth vario. Accidentally selecting a Bluetooth vario as FLARM device will no longer lead to a crash. A number of smaller bugs have been fixed as well.
6.8
2018-02-19
The GPS version of BlueFlyVario is now supported.

A number of bugs have been fixed as well. Paramotor uploads to XContest are now handled correctly. A number of small bugs when editing screens have now been fixed. And it is no longer required to restart the app for any Settings changes. Some rare crashes will be prevented as well.
6.7
2018-01-08
The main news is the possibility to upload your flights directly to Spedmo.com. As always a number of bugs have been fixed as well, making it now possible to fly in the Dead Sea area, far below sea level.
6.6
2017-12-05
Now Flyskyhy is fully cleaned up for iOS-11 and has beautiful native iPhone-X support. Support for FlyBank, the combined external battery / vario, has been added.

And some annoying bugs have been fixed. First of all, the app will show normal altitude values again when running in the background. We managed to find a work-around for that irritating bug in iOS-11. There are work-arounds for some other, minor, iOS-11 bugs as well. And the crash that some experienced when trying to edit a waypoint is fixed as well.
6.5.2
2017-09-16
New functionality
• Added basic support for AirWhere
• Prepared for iOS-11

Bugfixes:
• Fixed a bug which could lead to a crash
• Hanggliding flights can now be uploaded to XContest again
• Fixed a problem that could lead to only half a visible screen after taking a photo

2017-07-26
A number of small improvements are made, especially in the area of flight replay. Starting replay will no longer try to connect to a Bluetooth vario. Scrolling through the flight will no longer switch back-and-forth to the thermal centring instrument, and the map will be less jittery during scrolling as well. Airspace alarms will now always come at their standard times during normal replay, also after you have already scrolled over them.

Leading and trailing spaces are now stripped from your username and password before being used, which was a common cause for issues with flight uploading and connection to LiveTrack24 and Loctome live reporting.

Bugfixes:
• Airspace warning distance is now calculated correctly.
• IGC will no longer have entries out of order
6.3

Various bug-fixes:
• problem with acceptance on UK XC League of some logs
• problem with SkyDrop vario sound volume at startup
• bug which could lead to a crash of the app
• other small bugs

This version restores the FAI triangle optimisation of the XC-Package.
The old reliable wind calculations have also been put back. The new algorithms need some serious tuning before they are reliable enough.
6.1
2017-05-29
This version solves a problem that caused the app to misbehave badly for those who bought the XP-Package extension. This version does not have live FAI-triangle optimisation which was the cause of the problems. I will try to bring that back as soon as possible.
6.0
2017-05-22
The XC-Package is essential when you start flying longer distances. It adds a number of instruments that help you navigate, utilize thermals better, and keep track of the distances you are flying. In addition to the new instruments, the map will show your general flight direction, and where you will hit the ground with your current glide ratio. The XC-Package also introduces FAI Triangle optimisation during flight.

The following instruments are available with the XC-Package:
• Distance from take-off
• Thermal centring
• Sideview
• Current FAI Triangle
• Potential FAI Triangle

Bugfixes:
• Description of waypoint was not copied when copying the waypoint
• Default waypoint radius for OziExplorer waypoint files

Oriona51,
Needs to use barometer for altitude
I like this app, but it needs a little improvement. Mainly it needs to use the built in pressure sensor of smartphones. The gps altitude is always displaying inaccurately. It needs to at least use the barometer to display height above ground and not gps. Or at the very least the ability to choose either gps or pressure altitude. Pressure altitude is way more reliable. That’s what drones and virtually all aviation uses. Because it does not utilize pressure altitude, I had to buy an altimeter watch that does. But id prefer to use only one device. Especially for data and flight telemetry. If altitude is displayed wrong, then the recorded telemetry is also wrong. Sometimes by several hundred feet.

The last con is the map. Tap to zoom is not intuitive. It should use pinch to zoom.
ChilliTrav,
Great app for XC Tracer & PG
I use this app for paragliding, Bluetooth paired with my XC Tracer Mini II GPS (instead of internal iPhone sensors which aren’t as accurate), and it works splendidly!
IMO, anyone who is expecting an app to turn their phone into a solid variometer is kidding themselves, and really not using this kind of app appropriately. Doing that is relying on internal phone sensors that simply aren’t meant to be used for a variometer. However, if one pairs their phone to a REAL variometer and uses this app as the display, it is GREAT!
Customizable screens make personalized layout easy. Landscape layout means it fits on my flight deck nicely. Thermal display and auto-switching to thermalling display facilitate centering on the thermal core. The Telegram group chat for extra tips and help is super handy too. I really don’t have any complaints.
Airplanek8,
App works great for sailplanes
App has been great so far but could definitely use additional sailplane features like an estimate of needed altitude to reach target based on glide ratio and groundspeed. The maps could be a bit more clear resolution as well. I'd like the app icon to be updated to reflect glider pilots as well :)

Keep up the good work!
aranpura,
Fantastic for paramotors too
I looked at many different apps to use while paramotoring, and even considered the expensive (but nice) Garmin smartwatch options. FlySkyHy gives me everything I would want and more, in a highly customizable interface clearly designed by someone who flies. I particularly like the automatic flight logs and the ability to display altitude above sea level and above ground level at the same time.

If I had any criticism, it's that the emphasis on function over form leaves it looking a tiny bit homemade. But I would trade an ornamental interface for an well-considered and functional one any day.
m72422,
Not great
The only useful thing this app does is send data to livetrack24, and it only kind of does that. There is no feedback if someone messes up their livetrack24 login credentials in the app, it just doesn’t send data. We were fighting this all week at our event after recommending people use this app. Also when uploading flights to leonardo the data (glider type etc) doesn’t work correctly.

Anything else this app could be good for requires buying “extensions” so to have full functionality this is a $40 app. I would love to have a moving map with airspace, roads, towns, waypoints and maybe even other pilots I am flying with. This app might do it but no way it’s worth $40 to find out.
ranetworkers,
Good App
I normally use the “thermal assistant” like back up from my vario, this last weekend I forgot my instrument and one of the back up batteries on home.
I was able to close a dreamed FAI triangle and make a small 30 kms task the next day.
I highly recommend this app, my only suggestion is: “Is possible have a “voice assistance” with a count down for the start, like 5 minutes, 1 minute, 30 seconds, 10,9,8…. and/or can choose any sound we want for the alarms like Start open or en every waypoint? Thanks 🙏
BarryThePirate,
Only good for recording tracks
None of the numerical instruments give useable numbers:
- lift is insanely optimistic, often showing 2m/s+ when my other instrument and senses tells me more realistically that I’m going down.
- glide ratio is very pessimistic
- wind speed calculations always believe I have a massive tailwind when on glide because of speed bar. Calculations are even further off if your phone is not aligned to your direction of flight.
- if more than 100km from my house, height agl is equal to my altitude msl, indicating that the app is not loading ground height data. This is even when I have very good reception.

As a result the only useful things the app does for me are:
- show a map (with airspace and waypoints)
- record my track
- report my position to livetrack24.

It does not feel like the full fledged instrument I would expect from a phone app.
7crwolf,
Fantastic paragliding vario app!
I’ve been using FlySkyHy as my primary vario for 2 years now. Works great with any iPhone with a barometer, and even better with any paired micro-vario, such as the cheap (but excellent) BlueFly. I use it to log all of my flights automatically, and it well and truly has the capability of replacing expensive dedicated costly varios. The new thermal centering tool in the XC pack is an incredible addition to an already fantastic app!
Jim_VA,
Amended: My ‘Go-to’ App for PPG and Pg
I’ve now used this app for more than two years. I’ve logged both PG and PPG flights during that time with more than 200 hours para motor flights.

Since my first review, I’ve had several exchanges with developer by email who was always very responsive. Kudos.

The newly added Comments field (after flight editable) and other enhancements are greatly enhance this App’s use as useful logbook to record notes about each specific flight. The flight tracking function and ability to replay the flights seems very accurate.

Found and linked to my BlueFlyvario easily.
Kjartan S,
Works well for gliders too
I bought this for just the flight track recorder, but then added the thermal centering extension. Works very well! Much easier to get the most from a thermal and stay attached in it. Very pleased with it. Wish I had a bigger phone.
