EnggaG,
It works but improvement should is needed
I have the $49/year plan and at this time just for work purposes to call in meeting and backup phone when we travelling. Voice quality is good over the app or premium voice text is responsive too, although some maybe delayed in receiving. Since it used app, it works pretty much like textnow or google hangouts(when integrated with google voice). When you install the app in 2 phones, all the history only relates to that particular phone, same with text. Meaning it doesnt work globally. If you start a text from phone 1, half way of conversations you switch to phone 2, phone 1 wont see what you replied from phone 2, same with call history. You make/receive a call on phone 1, that history wont shot on phone 2 app so its not completely talked across many devices. Google hangouts tmobile’s digits and textnow is better at this. Also, adding block numbers only work with contacts, not just any numbers you can add freely and if you have 2 numbers to block, you have to completely close the app after adding the first one then enter another after you reopen it. Phone quaility, however, is very good over wifi and cellular, either using AT&T network with its own freedompop sim or Sprint network when installed on other phone i have.

From Good to Garbage
I’ve been using FreedomPop since 2015 and at the time I found it to be a great free service. You could get up to 1GB of data by adding friends and the app was good enough to send the occasional text or phone call. Once I got rid of my Sprint phone and went to the LTE Sim everything went downhill. The AT&T service is much worse, at the time none of the services I was paying for on the Sprint plan would work with the LTE Sim, and you don’t get as much free data. It didn’t really matter since I mainly only use the service on my iPad when I’m not around my phone or WiFi but most recently I noticed I no longer get the extra 500MB of data from having friends and now only get a measly 250MB and if it’s still the way it used to work then you can’t even use the data once you go lower than 100MB which makes the data all together useless. In recent updates I also noticed the app never rings when I get a call, I only get a notification afterward saying I missed the call and usually the call quality is bad, which it used to not be. Considering it seems they are doing everything to push all of their free users onto a paid plan (which are all horrible deals for the money) I’m glad I switched to a much better prepaid company for my phone and I’m not even sure I want to keep their sim in my iPad for the 250MB of free data which is all but good enough to update one app or scroll through a feed for about 30 seconds. Sad!
Carr-mosh,
Don't bother updating to the latest . . .
The version before this one served me quite well, vibrating when an incoming call would come and refreshing the text message section whenever I would enter it.
Decided to update after reading how they fixed the voicemail playback being too quiet glitch along with resending a "sending. . ." text. But this update wasn't worth it. It removed enjoyable features such as copying select portions of your texts. Not to mention it's been more glitchy. A few times I got a notification of a new text and when I would tap it to check what friends wrote, nothing showed up. Plus, there have been quite a few annoying occasions where an ongoing call no longer even rings and just tells me that I missed the call.
PLEASE FIX THESE SOON!
(I've been a paying customer for over 20 months now)
Chula .,
Great for the price.
I got this as an experiment because my texting had ballooned, making my cellphone costs go from $10 a month to nearly $20. That’s not a lot, but why pay more for the same thing? I use this on my iPad. It’s great for texting. Phone call quality has been spotty, but I’ve used it for long calls with a Chatty Cathy. Photo quality is poor so I use photos I already have rather than use the in app camera. So upfront I paid like $10-15, of sure, but I haven’t paid more since. That was a few months ago, so it’s saving me money already. That being said, you have to carefully look at your plan so you aren’t surprised with charges you didn’t know you’d get. There is a place with account information I. The app so you can easily keep track and not go over. I use this as a supplement rather than a replacement for my main cell phone. I suppose I could use it to replace my main phone if I were totally broke but then I’d have to pay for voicemail and crunch numbers again. I’d probably just change my main line plan and keep this as a supplement. Overall, worth it for my purposes, could work for a lot of people.
Gemaknee,
If you are expecting free fabulous service, keep looking and good luck!
But if you want to save a bunch of money and not have to worry about paying your phone every month or re-uping your minutes with some refilling card then you cannot beat Freedom Pops fantastic feature filled deals! My first savings came with the almost free micro sim that my iPhone 6+ was thrilled to have inserted in its little docking space! After researching all of their various deals I figured the 6 month Premium unlimited plan was the best and most affordable choice for myself at just about 15$ a month - For UNLIMITED - less than $15 A MONTH! I can send pics and get on the internet, make calls and SMS. How great is that?! And I don’t have to worry about paying another bill for 6 months! I am overjoyed as I have not found any other plans that beat that rate. And if I can no longer afford it I can just go with the limited free plan and still have service. It’s a no brainer!
hulgar1,
Ok , as long as you know what you are getting.
I use the free service only as I rarely use a phone when not on wifi so I can live with the low data and voice. It runs as an app on top of my iPhone so you don't use the native call or messaging, though iMessage works with other iPhones if you want and if on wifi that was not counted as a text in the Freedom pop account. My wife doesn't like to use my phone because you need to open an app first, but it doesn't bother me. Service can be spotty and sometimes text delivery delayed but again I can use imesssging to get around that with other iPhone users. One bonus was that I was able to make calls from Europe when on wifi even without paying for any international plan because it is IP based. Several limitations but for my limited use of it for mostly texting over wifi it has been great for me.
jaded3212,
A data phone
This is a data phone service. You have to understand what it is. For me this company stands for an ideal that I support. It’s a newer service provider. They’ve worked out a lot of the kinks. They continue to improve their product. Their customer service is excellent. Unlike prepaid phones I can leave money on my phone balance indefinitely. No other prepaid service allows for this. You can’t be on the Internet with it all the time unless you hookup to the WiFi. You can always use the app with a WiFi connection. As for the Internet service, we called those dongles when I was working abroad, and their rates and service for data based internet are slightly better then those I received around the world. I’ve been with this company for a year, and I’m staying with them.
saychoss,
Lousy service for the price
In my 8-month experience with FreedomPop, 20% of the time when I make calls I get a service outage message or one or both of the parties on the call cannot hear/understand each other. Many other times, the calls drop even in mid conversation even when I am sitting in one place (not changing cell towers). In early July 2018, I updated my app with high hopes that quality would improve. Instead, 10 days have gone by now where I have not received a single incoming call. People try to call me but the calls are not ringing or vibrating on my phone...I just receive missed call messages and voice messages left for me. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my FP app, but incoming calls are still broken. I am ready to switch to a more reliable cell phone provider (T-Mobile) that is $20 per month instead of the $17 I have been paying to FP for lousy service and no use of the native dialer on my iPhone.
KrashAir,
NOT FREE!
I have followed all the required jumping thru hoops for the free service. But they still bill my credit card $5/mo in numerous penny charges. The bank as closed my account TWICE but because its setup with a recurring charge they still get the new account info thru Visa. This past month the bank escalated this to Visa directly as FP as a merchant has no available billing support for the free services. Visa is now required to block and validate ALL transactions made by FP. Will update with the next software release if the issue has been resolved or not.

Update to developer’s response. I have not had service in over a year. My account has been canceled and deactivated per customer service emails confirmations. I started receiving MULTIPLE penny charges a day totaling between $20-$25 every 2 to 3 months late last year and again this year. Bank responded back that Visa is now blocking the charges and all future attempts as fraudulent as the merchant contact information on record is unreachable and unresponsive.
az3ntize,
Great for what it is.
I am a simple person with the least interest in using a phone for anything other than calling a bit and texting. But I realized as I gotten some apps the data runs much faster than anything and the topple up is a 20 automatic and trying to turn this off will cost me monthly? So It feels like I’m trapped a bit and on top of that I miss the ability to buy data that used to be a special advertisement that says pay 20 and get 4 gigs or 40 for 7 gigs with or pay 5 for one 1 gig and it will stick to me even after the month. I miss this and another thing why can’t I have the option to choose my own ring tone besides the one that is provided I would like control on that I personally have some cool beats that I would love to have as ring tones. Specially for texting.
