Timc266,
Trained help
I echo the reviews of others that like the fact that trained botanists will review the photos submitted to give more definite answers than what simple picture comparisons may provide. I was quite happy with my answer provided, however it does cost $2 to receive such an answer.

I was able to identify other plants rather easily by comparing pictures submitted of known plants to mine. There was one though I needed expert help with and the answer was prompt as promised. I think it's worth the occasional $2 for such help. The only disappointing aspect of such help was that the specific species could not be identified given the variations endemic to my region. The answer provided was still much more than I could have done on my own however. They were able to identify the genus which was more than I was able to do.

4 stars out of 5 for the prompt reply from the expert at a reasonable price but not 5 since the species could not be identified.
ThreeTzuMama,
Botanist HELP - YAY!
This app on its own was not able to help me identify a very fragrant shrub from my front yard. What it DID do for me, however, was put me in touch with a knowledgeable individual whom I was told in advance was a Botanist, who very promptly responded (on a SUNDAY) to my submitted photos (I sent five - one of entire plant, a closer shot of a 1 foot section, and three close ups of leaf, blossoms and blossoms and leaves together) via email with my answer. They nailed it. (Pittosporum Tobira - Mock Orange!) In addition to the identification came practical information regarding the origin/care/watering/sun/pruning/pests of my plant. The app is free. The answers? $1.99 USD, which, for the prompt, accurate information plus the bonus info included was not unreasonable, I feel. If you are seriously seeking an answer to your gardening puzzle, this app may just be your best friend because if you're diligent you will get your answer. If you can't locate it on your own within the app you still have recourse to get your answer via a trained professional. VERY pleased, indeed.
HappyBetta,
Latest iOS update causes the app to freeze.
I updated my phone in May 2021, and the app no longer works. You can take a photo but you cannot enlarge the image to fit into the area needed for identification. Very very disappointed this needs to be fixed because I love this app. Update June 2022. The app will no longer recognize or upload a photo that you take with the app. It will only behave normally if you take a picture of the plant with your camera first and then upload the photo. Otherwise nothing happens. It’s a little bit worse than my last review unfortunately, but once I get an answer it is nearly 100% correct update, January 2 023I am still having the same problem so I take a photo of the plant first and then add it to my library and use that photo. It does not seem to want to take Live Photos, I don’t mean live photo in the Apple sense, but in the app sense
Joseph_Joseph,
Excellent results
Easily Five Stars. Excellent support. Full information of the explanation of what we needed. Our question was promptly acknowledged and we were told how many responses were made ahead of mine. An hour later we had our response. The information was accurate and corresponded to the plant that we asked about. We often passed by this bush with beautiful flowers that always intrigued us as to what it was called. Easily we took a few pictures of the whole plant and close ups of the flowers and easily submitted them via the app. I used this service about six months ago and we got similar expert replies and great customer care. A small fee for the Botanist's effort and time is part of the submittal - it is worth paying this small amount for knowing how to get a plant identified that you want to bring you joy for years to come after you plant it. Thank you app Developers and Botanists!
The Notorious t.i.g,
Mostly good matches, a few misses
Love this app! I'm trying to naturalize a large portion of my yard, meaning lots of Weeds find they're way in. Granted, some are lovely Weeds, and this app has helped me identify ones that look great but will take over and crowd out the variety in going for.

One plant had to be submitted to a horticulturist, and I received an answer in a few short hours, well worth the $1.99. Sadly, this beauty only sprouts every two years so I'll have to keep it in file when I get confused as to what it is in 2019 😀.

There's one plant that has yet to be identified, mainly because the big differentiator is the flowers, which haven't happened yet. Two of the possibilities are things to remove whereas the third option is a definite keeper so I'm hesitant to yank it out just in case.
Mmmnnnnggdgdgdfsuekcncb,
Can't ID some common bedding plants
As an experienced gardener with a degree in botany, I thought this would be helpful when I'm out and about. So I tried it on the bedding plants on my porch to test it. While it did offer the correct item in 6 of 9 trials, only one of them was the top hit (purple spoonbill osteospermum). It completely failed on a plain red snapdragon, and a black single petunia. There was also no option to input a leaf for a non-flowering plant, such as ferns, or something grown for their leaves such as coleus. I tried my angel-wing begonia and got no results with a leaf (I did try the flower also, since it has a few at this time). Items tested also include pink semi-cactus dahlia, single yellow gerber daisy, double purple calibrachoa, double purple petunia, and purple lobelia. Since this app has failed at common bedding plants that I have no trouble with, I can't see how it would be useful to me when I see something unusual in someones yard and want to know what it is on the spot.
Morbis59,
Very Poor App!
This App was reviewed on my local noon news program and they made it sound so wonderful and helpful so I, being in need of all the plant and gardening help I can get, downloaded this App. I was skeptical to say the least as I've had horrible results from other Apps that were "supposed" to identify things by sound or photos!
This one lost out instantly! I gave it a test and it completely failed to identify my plant! It gave me well over "50" possible matches and "none" were even a tiny bit close to what my plant is! I entered a photo of my "Streptocarpus" Ladyslippers Grape Ice. Could not identify it....not even the least bit close. The matches I received were totally ridiculous no where at all what I entered! My plant is a very, very common house and garden plant that is closely related to an African Violet"! I thought this would be a simple test to see how accurate this App is! It's horrible! If it couldn't identify this simple plant, how could it identify more complicated types?!
It's been deleted! Totally useless App!
Graciiesd,
Identified my House Plant IMMEDIATELY!
I was attempting to identify my house plant to make sure it wasn't poisonous to my new kitten and had zero luck with the LeafSnap app.. it made me needlessly 'snap' off a healthy leaf and place it on white background for contrast purposes to take a picture. After waiting almost 2 minutes it returned 26 possible plants and not ONE of them came even close to looking like my plant.
So I decided to try ONE more app and I'm glad I chose this one. I didn't have to pay a dime, I just took a picture of the entire plant (no snapping off leaves or special backdrop colors needed) and BAM! It came back with two pictures both being my Exact plant!!! Took like 45 secs total... Seriously. Deleting LeafSnap immediately and keeping this super helpful and efficient app!
Pimalakajaj,
Failure to identify an orchid plant
I was looking more for a gardening care app but also a plant id. I saw this and thought I’d try it. It failed to identify orchid plant matched with plants I’ve never seen before except for a plant that my mom calls a snake plant which is a plant that has pointed leaves and grows straight up with a stripped detail and if the tips are broken it won’t grow.

Also I do not like that you MUST subscribe for email and promotions or newsletters to sign up for free. I attempted to push the grayed out green button with out the box checked and it wouldn’t do anything. Then I noticed the button changed shades of green when the option of receiving emails was checked vs unchecked. Why make it an optional thing when it is a must to use the app? You might as well take the ability to check the box or leave it unchecked out by stating that you will receive emails while using the app.

I’ve removed the app. Hopefully I can unsubscribe for promotions and such.
zeroeure,
Misleading and hollow app
It’s unfortunate to have to write this as it seems to be in tandem with a whole slew of apps centered around plant keeping and horticulture. If you are looking for answers, the only ones you will get from this are through the Facebook group that you would have to join. Otherwise, there’s nothing in the app. The other things to do are go through a portal of places to buy plants, which you can easily do with a web search. The ask a horticulturist laughable section is sadly only to “identify” your plant, and they literally just send you a Wikipedia article.... it’s honestly embarrassing that this is what horticultural apps have for us today. All of this I already do as a beginning plant keeper, I’m looking for a space online I can speak with others who are also hobbyists or horticulturists. This app doesn’t do any of that. It’s a shell of an app for web searches and a Facebook (cringe) group.
