Description

The Glide Oracle is an oracle whose roots are in the tradition of the I Ching, and whose symbols announced themselves as an alien language called Glide, transmitted in an altered state of consciousness. Glide symbols dynamically transform under the touch of the user, and deliver a translation. These translations of 729 Glide hexagrams were completed by Dr. Diana Slattery of the Department of Xenolinguistics at the Institute for the Encouragement of Outrageous Ideas. Slattery speculates that language and consciousness are co-evolving in the human species, catalyzed in the culture by psychedelic experience, an idea addressed by psychedelic philosopher Terence McKenna. She sees the morphing symbols of Glide as a model of a new way of making meaning that can potentially rewire the brain with a bias toward perception of transforming rather than static states, increasing the fluidity and flexibility of thought forms.

Beautiful Divination tool
First, my impressions of this app. I have a number of divination tools on my iPhone, some for fun, some for random (or is it?) inspiration or creative work, and a very few for personal contemplation (not "predicting the future," but helping me see what kind of patterns may be swirling around me, so to say, get some outside input to help me look at things differently). There are hardly any apps that do the latter well, Glide Oracle is one of them! My first time using it yielded a response that was uncannily specific to what I was concerned about, and not only pinpointed my situation (not a common one), but in a brief gnomic set of phrases also gave me some insight about what to do. Whether this will continue to happen I don't know, I've only begun to use the app. It is well made, and just watching the glyphs morph from one to another is quite meditative and entertaining. The responses I've seen so far are typically short (three or four lines of poetic phrases, sometimes longer) with a name for each glyph. That sounds like not much, but the phrases are dense with meaning. This, so far, is up their with the I Ching and the Tarot for me (though again, I'm still getting to know it). It has the ease of the I Ching (easier), and the glyphs give it an artistic element for a visual appeal. When you choose one, there is a background made by Slattery's software she made that shows the glyphs written in 3D, neat looking, but are better in video (YouTube has some examples). I am a student of divination tools, for decades, and it is great to see something totally new that is such a pleasure to work with and seems to resonate with the universal unconscious or whatever it is that makes such tools useful.

Now, a few words on the background of Glide. The description of this app may sound crazy or silly if you are not familiar with Diana Reed Slattery's work (I highly recommend her book _Xenolinguistics : Psychedelics, Language, and the Evolution of Consciousness)_. She seems to me to be quite well grounded, highly educated, intelligent, creative, with a DEEP understanding of theories of consciousness and related matters (philosophy, neurology, chemistry, art, history, linguistics, etc). The Glide language she explores (this app being just one of many vehicles) is no hippy-dippy new age stuff! She is a serious philosopher (with a healthy sense of humor, a good sign from a person who designs an oracle!). No sign of a messianic complex, another good sign. Whether you are a psychonaut or not (I'm just an armchair reader, no experience with entheogens - this app is great for teetotalers), her theories are worth looking into if you are interested in the field of consciousness studies.
