Description

This app is ad-supported and completely FREE! You can remove the ads through an in-app purchase, but we have tried to make them as unobtrusive as possible. Thank you!

Quickly master both Hiragana AND Katakana in one app. Purchase once and learn on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad for no extra charge.

Ever wanted to learn Japanese but didn't know where to begin? Learning hiragana first is often suggested by Japanese teachers and many textbooks (Genki, Japanese for Busy People Kana version, etc) virtually require it. This app will help you master both syllabaries* quickly and painlessly.

This app has over 250 sound files featuring all the main hiragana and katakana characters (we will be adding all of the combination characters soon as a free update!) and about 150 example words using characters learned.

- Universal app: iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
- Learn using Study cards with all information on a single card or with Flashcards to flip to see answers
- Quiz yourself after studying each section and review any missed answers
- Search all hiragana, katakana, and example words
- Random function: tap if you are feeling lucky -- great for reviewing all hiragana and katakana
- Lessons -- an additional way to study all hiragana and katakana
- (on iPad) view random hiragana on the front page

If you are sure you want to learn Japanese, you may want to grab our "Japanese Phrases & Lessons" app instead (or you can click on our "TheJapanesePage.com" link at the top to see all our apps). This includes most (but not all) of what is here for hiragana and katakana AND also includes kanji and grammar lessons plus almost 3,000 sound files of common words and phrases.

If you have ANY questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact us.

* Although often called "alphabets," Hiragana and Katakana are more properly called "syllabaries" since each character more or less represents a syllable.

Thank you for your suggestions! This is a big update.

This update adds:
* 35 new sound files and a new category (under Katakana): Katakana English words (absolutely free!)
* option to remove ads (in-app purchase) -- of course the app is complete as always, but this gives you an option to remove ads if you don't like them.
* Fixed a few errors in the data and added more information to existing data.
* improved UI (let us know what you think)
* Adds a tutorial to help you get the most out of the app.
* Adds spaced repetition--now mark a card as mastered, familiar, or unfamiliar and it will appear more or less frequently
* The ad in the Quiz is moved to the bottom so it doesn't block anything.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions or questions about the app.

Thank you!

Iplaygpodgamesomly,
Best app for learning hirigana and katakana!!!!!
I cannot express how thankful I am. This is by far the best app to improve your hirigana and katakana skills, and I have tried A LOT of apps. Although this app has some ads that and sometimes there’s one ad that always pops up when you enter, it still works grrreat. 10/10
Zeno 👐👇✌️👈💪👐✋,
Excellent
I'm using this to help me learn hiragana and katakana. I can easily isolate and focus on specific groups of characters and quiz myself so I can get faster with recognizing what characters make which sounds. Love this app❤️
Angry Full Bird,
Sugoi desu!
I started a Japanese course and was placed in a class much more advanced than I could handle, and had to learn Hiragana and Katakana fast--very fast. This app enabled me to have decent command in two weeks! Awesome!
brownOtaku,
Fantastic way to learn hiragana/katanaka
It's free! You can't beat that! Easy way to learn section by section but quizzes and flash cards. Love it!
anime 😍,
Good app
It is a good app, but it the letters that represent the sound ( a, e, u ,o, i, ke, ko, ki, etc...) could be bigger, and easier to click on. Good app tho
Samantha Mendoza,
Great!
This app is extremely helpful😁

Annoying app
From the initial, unskippable pop-up that directs you to their website, all the way through their uninformative, text-only “lessons,” this app proved useless from minute one. One of my few near-immediate uninstalls.
Lime07,
Love it!
It’s so helpful. I especially love the tips to help you remember what’s what.

Amazing app for Japanese students!
I found this app to be absolutely perfect for keeping my daily practice routines up for when I'm on the go. It has even taught me a few things, and I'm sure it helps the absolute beginners learn too. My only recommendation is for in the reviews of the chapter lessons. It shows a random character in that chapter (5 per chapter) and puts randomized buttons for multiple choice guessing. It is very helpful, however I would like to see the buttons made a bit larger and spread out because sometimes I mis-tap the wrong answer because they are so small. Another recommendation would also be perhaps having the app
Make the sound of the correct kana when you pick the correct romaji to it on the multiple choice. It would be nice for those still learning and like to say the kana as they come. All in all, nice app, and I will definitely recommend this to my friends that are currently learning Japanese. And the best part is that it's free!
Famhike4,
Very pleased!
This app is excellent for learning to read, write and speak Japanese starting with the different alphabets. I have been using this to supplement my learning, and it has been a wonderful tool to help me to quickly learn the alphabets. I am also using Rosetta Stone, but found it difficult to associate the written words with the pictures using that program (unless in romanji). This app has made learning the alphabets and words unbelievably easy, and helped me over the block that I was facing... Additionally, the support/(author?) of this app is extremely helpful and quick to respond. I had a technical question (which turned out to be my own user error). I shot an email over--the response was quick, friendly, and my problem was solved by the next morning! I highly recommend this app!
