Ximiiiiii,
Nice book but some audio issue
The audio works fine when first being played. But there’s no sound comes out if wait for some time and play again. I have to restart the app to get the sound to work.
Hazard Harry,
Sound Font Woes
I've only just started reading, so I can't say much about the content of the book (from what I've read so far it seems to be solid though).

One thing that immediately stood out to me was that the sound font/sample/synth used in the examples is really, reeeally cheap sounding. It reminds me of something you would hear in DOS era computer games. It would be less distracting if they were replaced with something nicer. I know this is a nitpick, but when the rest of the book looks so nice and sleek, it's a little jarring to hear something so old and ugly.

I realize this may not be possible from a time/effort perspective since it looks like you hard-rendered them into QuickTime files and redoing it could take too long, but I would immediately bump my review up to a 5 if that was fixed. : )
AmyB8484,
The best!
I learned more in the few days I spent going through this app than I did in years of trying and failing to learn an instrument, taking classes, and reading books about theory. It breaks it down so simple it almost makes me mad at all the teachers and books that make it so hard when it doesn't have to be. I've actually decided to give the piano and songwriting another shot because I finally understand it. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn theory, any instrument, or songwriting. I wish I could have had this years ago.
crumb collector,
Unfortunately I’m not very quick at math
Unfortunately I’m not very quick at math. Everything was fine until it introduced the chord numbers correlating to scale degrees. Then it felt like it was hopping, skipping, and jumping away from the pace it started with, in describing everything. Sort of like someone saying ‘This is a ball. Now toss the ball in the air. Neat huh? Now here’s 2 other balls and now toss them into the opposite hands while one is tossed in mid-air, and then repeat the process. Now you’re juggling! Make sense??.” My guitar teacher did this with me too, and I just sat there with my eyes glazed over. Still wasn’t getting it, but he wouldn’t slow down to bridge the pieces. I would have preferred it rest into the concept more thoroughly to emphasize the structure at the pace it started with as it introduced the chord numbers. So... hopefully somehow I’ll learn music theory. Someday. Maybe?
28dkwoo,
Totally 5 Stars! Get it!
Alright, so it’s for beginners. I’m no beginner but I have never seen practical how-to songwriting content laid out so concisely and accurately. If you’re just starting out trying to write songs and figure out chords, this could almost suffice as the one reference you need to understand what you are doing. Excellent work, thanks to the authors! And after you get this one, then move to HookTheory II where the fun continues!
Blunix,
This is AMAZING!!!
Flat out the best app to learn basic music theory.

This app is perfect for:
Beginners
People who play an instrument(s)
People who want to wired their own music.

Music is an art form and although every rule can be broken, knowing basic form and structure will make the process more fun and less tedious.

This app helped me:
Start and develop a musical idea quickly
Recognize what will make it a "catchy" tune
And add variety in general.

There is so much more I could say about this app but if you are serious about understanding music better just get is app. You can finish it in a few hours and use it as a reference as often as you need it. Best part is... You really don't need to understand "notes"per-se, music is explained with numbers so it is super easy to understand.
mojo jo jo jo jo jo,
GREAT PRODUCT
I see people complaining about how it's $15. If $15 is so much to you maybe you don't want to learn this as much as you thought you did. The content in this app is worth much more than $15 and is taught in a way that is so easily grasped that if you are a beginner or an expert you can learn things that other videos/websites cannot teach you. Very well put together and worth the $15 if you have a true passion for music
Mkeymont,
Decent, with bugs...
I had to shut down and restart every 4 - 5 pages because the "movies" stop working. P.S., they arent really movies, theyre audio examples with some animation. None are longer than 20 seconds and they are all low quality midi. That isnt really a bad thing because it forces you to listen to the harmony, not the production quality of the recording.

I'll probably get the next installment, but this could be done better, given the price. More advanced folks should check out mdecks tonal harmony app. This is a great introduction to the topic though.
Brandon Stumpf,
Great Way to Learn Music Theory
I really like the way Hooktheory presents music theory in a simple and colorful manner. Separating music into chords and melody is a good and simple way to organize it. I think the book should go more in depth for the price you pay for it. The book doesn't go into advanced inversions, applied chords, or the 7 musical modes. I like the popular examples of music theory presented. Overall a great service, but the book needs to catch up with hookpad.
Aman Bansil,
Mind is exploding with the amount of aha moments
This is so well written. I am loving this journey to understand music. It's answering questions I've felt in music but didn't have the vocabulary to ask. Amazing job. Btw, SIT WITH A PIANO/KEYBOARD WHEN READING THIS. It's a 1000x better if you are sitting with some kind of a keyboard/piano while reading so that you can try things as you are reading. Ok back to the book.
