Description

Hoolan is a free tracking and analysis app for kitesurfers and wingfoilers that uses just your Apple Watch to track sessions. Record both jumps and gps tracks on your Apple Watch and see live data on your wrist as you ride. Dive deep into your session statistics on your iPhone and get unique insights into your performance that will keep you motivated and pushing to improve.

TRACK ON YOUR APPLE WATCH
Download the Hoolan app onto your Apple Watch and you’re all set to record your kitesurfing, kiteboarding, kitefoiling and wingfoiling sessions! No need to attach anything to your board. No need to risk taking your phone. No need for a cellular connection on your watch.

Apple Watches are designed for use on water and record the same motion and gps data as phones, as well as your health data. Hoolan tracks using Apple Watches only, you cannot use your phone to track. See www.hoolan.app/why-track-on-a-watch for all the benefits of tracking on a watch.

ANALYSE ON YOUR PHONE
Record on your watch and once your watch and phone have an internet connection, your data will automatically sync across to the Hoolan phone app where it's translated into clearly presented, detailed statistics.

LIVE STATS AS YOU RIDE
See your live speed, distance and jump data on your apple watch as you ride. Push yourself to go further, higher, faster....

LOG & PROGRESS
Keep a log of all your kitesurfing, kiteboarding, kitefoiling and wingfoiling sessions - spots, wind and weather, kit, dates and times, gps tracks, achievements and performance statistics. Compare sessions, view progression over time, write notes, and share with friends (coming soon).

ADVANCED PERFORMANCE STATISTICS
Access your tailored kitesurfing and wingfoiling statistics on your iPhone. See your ‘best in sessions’ and ‘personal bests’.
Jumps - height, airtime, jump distance, tack & totals.
Runs - distance, upwind gain, downwind gain, max speed, max speed over 100m, max speed over 500m, tack and stops.
Transitions - success rate, average speed through transition, transition time, tack and stops.
Health - max heart rate and calories burned.

IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS
Go deeper into your stats and view, filter and compare every run, transition or jump. Either relive your session visually by scrolling through your tracks on a map, or view your statistics in a list to scan, compare and focus down on a particular aspect of your performance, which you can then select to view on a map.

MEANINGFUL PERSONAL BESTS
The skill sets and progression when kiting on a twin tip, surfboard or foil, strapped vs strapless, or wingfoiling, strapped vs strapless, are different, and we record your personal bests for each different discipline.

RECORD HEALTH DATA
Hoolan integrates with Apple Watch's health and activity apps. Your sessions will contribute towards your activity rings and you will be able to see your heart rate and calories burned.

CLOUD BASED & SECURE
Never lose your session data - it is securely held on the cloud so you can view your sessions on any mobile device. We use industry-leading, robust security standards and practices.

DATA ACCURACY
We’ve spent months developing, comparing, testing and tweaking our algorithms to get them to the accuracy and reliability that we’re proud of.

ECONOMICAL ON BATTERY USE
In tests, just 1-2% of battery was used in 10 mins on a 44mm Apple Watch SE.

Version history

1.6.0
2023-07-14
In this release we're really excited to be introducing the following features and improvements:

GPX Export
It is now possible to export GPX files directly from the Hoolan phone app. Go to the three dot menu at the top right of the session details screen . Choose Export GPX File, wait for the file to download and then pick your preferred way to transfer your GPX file. This will allow you to upload your GPS data to platforms like Strava without the need for a third party paid tool :)

Workout Routes
We've enabled the Hoolan Watch App to write GPS data directly to Apple Health while you are recording a session. Once your data is in Apple Health you can use third party apps like Health Fit to export your session to platforms such as Strava. To allow Hoolan to write your GPS data to Apple Health you have to accept the Workout Routes permission. Once this update has been installed the Review Health Permissions screen should pop up the next time you open the Hoolan Watch App - this will allow you to accept the Workout Routes permission. Failing this, on your phone navigate to Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > Hoolan and toggle the write to Workout Routes permission on.

Session Analysis Filter
On the session analysis screen in the phone app, we've added a sorting & filter description at the top of the screen to help you understand how the runs, transitions and jumps are organised on the map and the list. For example if you tap through to the session analysis screen from your highest jump on the session details screen, then the sorting & filter description will tell you that the jumps you are looking at are sorted by highest jump first.

Finish Session Reminder
We've dialled down the aggressiveness of the finish session reminder that pops up after about 5 minutes once you've finished riding.

Upload Retry
We've expanded the scope of the retry upload button on the watch. Now it's possible to retry an upload not just for failed uploads but also for uploads that get stuck while queued or uploading.

Phone Settings
We've added some new functions to the settings screen in the Hoolan phone app. You can now:
- Rate Hoolan in the App Store
- Follow us on Facebook and Instagram
- Share a link to the Hoolan app with friends
- See what's new in the latest and previous versions of the app.

UI Improvements
We've updated the menu UI at the top right of the session details screen. Its now a three dot menu with a more modern feel and design.
1.5.0
2023-06-26
In this release we have:
- Made the map GPS tracks easier to see and interpret for both the overall session and the run, transition or jump that you're focusing on.
- Updated the colours used to represent different speeds on the GPS map tracks. This makes it much easier to see the speed changes along the track.
- Improved the performance of the map so that the GPS tracks will display much faster as you navigate through your session.
- Added a key to the map to help explain some of the icons and use of colour.
- Added an edit button next to your kit on the session details screen so that it is easier to navigate to the edit kit and activity screen.
1.4.0
2023-06-08
In this release we have:
- Updated how the spot information is displayed. You'll now be able to see a more detailed description of the spot location.
- We've added a quick start feature so you can start recording faster by choosing from one of your previous kit & activity selections.
- We've managed to squeeze a bit more juice out of the watch battery by optimising how we work with the watch's sensors.
- We've renamed 'falls' to be 'stops' throughout the app which is a more generic way to describe what's happening when a rider stops moving.
1.3.0
2023-05-16
In this version we are introducing an invite friends feature. You can now easily tell your friends about Hoolan using your favourite communication channels direct from the Hoolan app.
1.2.0
2023-05-08
- Improved support for complications. Add a Hoolan complication to your Apple Watch and launch Hoolan right from your watch face :)
- Some tweaks to our jump algorithm.
- Increase in the range of wing sizes.
- User interface improvements for the onboarding experience.
1.1.0
2023-04-28
In this update you will now be able to update the kit you used for your session, change the session activity type and delete a session. When you start recording, if you make a mistake when you select your activity type & kit you'll now be able to change it from the phone app once your session has been uploaded. Choosing the right kit and activity type for your session is important as personal bests are calculated based on the activity type and board type that you select.

NMB Jim,
Great watch app
Don’t have to attach a gadget and it’s free. Perfect. Jump data seems believable on day 1 of using app. Thanks !
Draw the moral,
Surprisingly Robust and Reliable
After having several frustrating experiences with Woo’s customer support, and unreliable session recording, I began looking around for another app to track my kite sessions.

I found about Hoolan from some of the kite forums I frequent, and decided to give it a try.

It’s honestly *really* nice! The UI is really intuitive, and reviewing sessions in Hoolan have been far more informative for my progression. I really appreciate the timeline view and events to show you exactly how things happened, and how that compared to the rest of your session.

Also, can I just say how nice it is to just hit record on your watch and ride? No fiddling with something on your board, and making sure they’re both on. It’s very liberating.

Things for them to improve: user “accounts”are pretty half-baked as they stand. If you use it mostly to look at your stats, it’s not too big of a deal.

There also aren’t any social features, which is not wholly a negative thing to be honest. But, I will say that it can be useful to see some of those spot stats, and see who is currently riding. If they can find the sweet spot of social discoverability, without all the extra ego booster “features”, I think this could really be a cool alternative to the bigger apps.

So far, I plan to continue tracking my sessions in Hoolan.

Finally an app for strapless sessions
