Coolcrowe,
Just awesome
After trying HR for a few months now I’ve decided it has surpassed my expectations. There’s a lot of good to mention: a large menu full of awesome vegan food; the recipes are legit delicious and require very little to zero prep; each week you get recipes automatically chosen but can swap out or edit them as you choose; the ability to mark items as never, sometimes, or often; and what’s more they are dependable, I’ve only had one incident of a food item being damaged on delivery and they instantly refund you for it. My only complaint was when the delivery was late one day (they do use FedEx, the worst) and I was upset that their customer service is text only. But after I chilled out I realized that’s probably for the best honestly, plus the delivery arrived the very next day still cold and was fully refunded. Their excellence in handling my complaint only made me a more loyal customer and I’m glad to have found a food delivery service as awesome as HR.
Zippo836201grin,
This is the worst food delivery service I have used
Every order that I have received is missing groceries. Sometimes it doesn’t have ingredients that I need in order to make the recipes for the week. So either I have to spend more money to go purchase substitutions from the store or the groceries I have received will go to waste. They refuse to refund my card for the nonexistent groceries that I have paid for. Instead, I have money refunded to my account. So either I continue ordering from them or the money they have put on my account is wasted. So it costs me more per week in monetary cost as well as time. I still have to go grocery shopping every week and I can’t make half the recipes that they have sent me food for. This week I was missing 5 ingredients, meaning I couldn’t make 2 of the 6 recipes. Last week I was missing both of the sauce packets for two of the recipes. The package was torn open for bread that I received this week and half of it was ruined. The concept for this service is fantastic but they seem to be completely incapable of providing what you pay for. The customer service is crap because they never actually fix the problem. Their only ‘solution’ requires you to continue paying for the service. I have had nothing but terrible experiences with this one. I am confident that any other food service would be better.
grootsnboots,
Good in theory, not in practice
Not happy with how they run this service. It’s good only if you use it as an online grocery store and even then it’s pricy. Having the ability to put in preferences for how often and which foods/meals you want sounds like a good feature in theory but in practice it doesn’t actually work. Multiple times I’ve been sent things on my rarely list and even some on my never list. If you’re unable to go in and check your order every week it’s very likely you’ll end up with duplicates or something you don’t want. That’s what was the most frustrating, they continually sent 2-3 of the same meals every week even though they have so many other meals that work with my dietary restrictions. With so many options why was I getting the same 5 meals repeatedly and none of the other meals from my often/frequent list? The worst part is if you don’t modify or skip there’s no way for them to cancel even if you contact them right after it bills. So if that money was for bills they don’t care. With the coming recession they can expect to lose a lot of people with that rigidity. The quality is fine but for a service that should make getting healthy meals easier, you have to do all the footwork. Even then you could end up with things you don’t like to eat because you can’t trust the algorithm.
Harold433,
Very Happy with Hungry Root
I’m very happy with Hungry Root. It has the fine quality products that you would come to expect from a premium delivery service, and I love that you can order recipes or individual ingredients, and that the ingredients come individually packaged so that you can mix and match and customize the recipes to your satisfaction. The app really helps keep track of what you have available to eat, and what you want to eat, by listing your previous orders, and letting you build your order over several days. It has the same concerns of every delivery service such as items migrating from ice packs or getting crushed or piddled on with juices but for the most part the items have been thoughtfully packaged and of such a fine quality that I am finding myself not wanting to switch to the more mundane and processed and less fresh products of the traditional grocery store delivery.
Clint and Victoria,
Saves money
I am a spender. This app allows me to stay out of the grocery stores. I change the recipes several times before actual delivery date. I am only given so much to deal with so me “shopping” beforehand gives me a sense of satisfaction. My husband thanks you HungryRoot! I really really enjoy I Can change up my recipes or just completely go away from the recipes and get groceries. The foods are good and so simple for our sports life. We have been using the service for a week and have made three delivery orders. As we go along, the menu or grocery items allows us to try new things without buying such bulky items. I love how we are not wasting food like before. This could be pricey if I only went with the recipes, but HungryRoot allows for the groceries which at times could be smaller credits. I love this service!
Voxcorvi,
Generally a ripoff
There’s a reason they don’t let you see the reviews on meals.

Hungryroot sends you meals that taste pretty good, but with unhealthy proportions that are way out of control to fill you up on starches like potatoes, polenta, and pasta. They are stingy on proteins. To feed four, they’ll send enough protein and veg for 2 and enough starch to feed 6-8. The exception is the peas and green beans, where they send enough for 8. They gave me peas for 8 to put in soup for two until it’s only peas in a light sauce, then called it soup for 4. They also have a lot of contrived “healthy” expensive foods, like whole grain penne that tastes bitter and coarse. You wind up with a bunch of wasted starches nobody wants to eat because there aren’t enough proteins or vegetables left to go on it. $100/week would be a good deal if the setting for four people fed them for 7 days a week, but it feeds 2-3 people for 4 days a week (4 meals, food enough for 2, with starch leftover for additional 4 people). I don’t want my meal to be a huge bowl of potatoes with two slices of pepper and two shrimp the size of quarters on it! This is not healthy at all.
Mamarow,
April 22 Update
I’ve been receiving Hungryroot since February and have generally LOVED everything about it. Although there have been a couple of glitches along the way, Hungryroot service reps have been quick to respond and have easily satisfied the issue at hand (late delivery/spoiled food). I would say that 98% of my deliveries have been great so I’m generally happy and continue to look forward to my Friday deliveries.
However, I’m reducing my rating from 5 to 4 stars because of availability issues. This has become the most frustrating part. When I looked back at the preferred ‘frequency’ list (the master list of all their groceries), I’m reminded of how many items that have YET to become available. Example: I’ve been patiently waiting since February for fresh tomatoes. 🍅 🤷‍♀️? So, come on, Hungryroot…you’ve got lettuce..you’ve got celery, onions & potatoes…I just don’t get it.
aCPA,
Inspiring food but challenging to avoid food allergies
I loved the two boxes of groceries I received. I felt inspired to cook again after losing heart accommodating picky eaters after marriage. My husband LOVES the flavors like I do, and I started adjusting my preferences (toggling often/sometimes) to try to find a balance that sends only one fish dish per week.

For now, I’ve suspended deliveries while I figure out how to navigate food allergies. I can select specific foods to “never” send, but I haven’t found a filter to avoid allergies as an ingredient in prepared items. For specific examples, I skipped breakfast the last two days when I checked labels for a plant “milk” that had pineapple juice(?!?) and a granola that included walnuts. I will concede that hitting two of my three food allergies in succeeding days is above average odds, but I need a better way to filter ingredients before reengaging with Hungryroot.
PirateCyndi,
Excellent Start
The Hungryroot app has made a huge difference in ordering my meals! I’ve been a subscriber for over a year and never realized how annoying it was to have to use my mobile browser to update my delivery every week. I’m a huge fan of this app for modifying upcoming orders, editing my cart, and shopping for groceries. I would like to see an update that incorporates the cookbook, so that you can save favorite recipes and reorder favorite meals quicker. There are also times that I already have key ingredients at home and I just want to add one or two items from a recipe. I would love to see a feature where you can add these individual items directly from the recipes page instead of having to search each one in the grocery page. All that being said, I love Hungryroot! It has saved me so much time in the kitchen!
Theseahawkchick,
I love HR, but have many complaints about the app
Legitimately 4.5/5 for the company and it’s service. The majority of what I receive is fantastic and this has saved me time, money, and I don’t waste as much. My complaints here are mostly about the app. 1.) I cannot track my delivery. Every time I click the track delivery button, it takes me to FedEx with an error that it doesn’t recognize the number. I have two requests, can you fix the track button and also list the tracking number so I can contact FedEx myself, if needed? 2.) I would love a feature to view just my received recipes and rate them directly there, no matter when they were delivered. 3.) For the service itself: I’d suggest packing the meat on the bottom or in its own smaller box with ice? I’ve tossed a decent amount of meat because it is loaded on the top and warm and discolored when by the time it arrives.
