Description

Thousands of users love Intelli Flashcards for its simplicity, effectiveness and elegance.

But first things first. This app is not free, as the value you get using it properly is enormous. I also don’t want you to do a blind bargain by making this app a paid one. So here is the deal: download it for free, try it with the only limitation of 50 flashcards, and if you love it, support the project by making an in-app purchase.

You add flashcards on your own, with vocabs or information you want to remember. Alternatively, you can import a 2-column CSV file with vocabs, if you have one.

The app is built around Spaced Repetition technique, which is not the best to learn new information (yes, I was wrong believing that initially), but the best to keep the information you’ve learnt. However, you can also learn with flashcards if you have a good visual memory. The best combination: learn new information by building up the associations and move that information to long-time memory by repeating it with flashcards.

Under the hood you will find Sebastian Leitner’s algorithm which basically has two simple rules: if you remember what’s on the back side of the card, the repeating interval is doubled (1-2-4-8-16 days and so on). If you forget the back side, start all over again with daily repeating.

Intelli Flashcards was designed to be used every day by someone, who learns foreign language. I’m aware of the fact, that average user would add 1500+ flashcards on his learning path. He might be outdoors and in a rush, so the process of creating a new flashcard is 0 clicks away - it’s right on the main screen! The repeating session is just 1 click away.

After a year of testing the spaced repetition algorithm, Derek Sivers (entrepreneur, programmer, founder of CD Baby and just a great person) stated that it was the most helpful learning technique he has tried for 14 years. To read more about Derek’s experiment, visit www.sivers.org/srs

From developer: after finishing working on Intelli, I started to use it to learn Spanish just to test the effectiveness of this algorithm. Intelli is not the only tool I’ve used, but it had the biggest impact on the learning speed and effectivity. I went from 0 to C1 level in Spanish in just 1 year, spending in average 15-20 minutes on learning every day. To read about other tools I’ve used to learn Spanish, go to www.boweidmann.com/language-learning

But then I’ve stumbled upon a great article about language learning, written by Tim Ferriss, the best-selling author and self-experimenter:

http://fourhourworkweek.com/2014/07/16/how-to-learn-any-language-in-record-time-and-never-forget-it/

Inspired by that article, I’ve worked on the possibility of adding images directly to flashcards. Version 3.0 was born. Thank you, Tim! That function has enhanced the experience the users have got with the app. And it’s much more interesting to recall a vocab looking on image. That’s how Rosetta Stone works. That’s how we recall our native vocabs. Maybe I should start a new language just to test this technique with images. ;)

User experience is one of the keywords this app is built around. So your opinion on that is very important to me. You can contact me personally out of the app and receive my response as soon as possible.

When I develop a new version of the app, I make sure new functionality does not affect the original user experience. However, it’s hard to predict the way you are going to make use of it. So if there is some unexpected behavior of the app, feel free to tell me about it.

And when somewhere in the future you realize, Intelli has supported you a lot on your path of learning, I’d love your short review in AppStore.

Version history

4.2.2
2021-04-04
- support Apple Pencil with iPad Pro
- Sync Overview section in the settings: now you can see the status of the last sync and trigger sync manually
- some other small bug fixes
4.2.1
2021-02-08
Thanks to your prompt feedback, I could identify and fix some bugs that creeped into the previous 4.2 version. These were among others:
- crash when trying to move/delete flash cards in the List View
- when trying to add a picture from Photo Gallery on iPad, crop view just silently closes itself
Also, the app is available for Mac on Apple Silicon! If you are able to download and test it, please tell me your experience and suggestions!
4.2
2021-01-21
This long overdue update contains a lot of bug fixes and stability improvements. These include:
- no more crashes when importing big files
- it's possible again to add a picture from the Photo Library
- if you want to use Text-To-Speech, but your device is muted, now you can see a corresponding prompt
- other small fixes in layout

Thank you so much for using Intelli!! A lot of components are being written from scratch. If this update has brought any new bugs, please don't hesitate to write a short feedback, so I can fix it promptly. Stay safe and have a nice day!
4.1.4
2019-10-01
- fixed CSV import where Intelli would not appear in the list of the app to import the CSV file
4.1.3
2019-09-11
- color scheme changes
- external keyboard shortcuts for iPad (Tab, cmd+S and so on. Just press and hold "command" to see available shortcuts for every screen)
- fixed the bug where the text would appear in bold after editing
4.1.2
2019-03-09
v4.1.2:
- fixed Baskerville font formatting
v4.1.1:
- fixed placeholder text setting when adding a picture
v4.1:
- fixed iPad crashes after trying to share a deck or move/delete a flash card
- text formatting now available (bold/italic/underline/strikethrough), more information below
- fonts were updated due to lack of support for required languages / text styling
Thank you very much for using this app! I'm excited to present a new feature that has been requested by you since the beginning of Intelli: text formatting. You can open a "formatting" toolbar while editing the text and select/deselect the text attributes. You can also change the attributes of the written text by selecting the text first and then applying the attributes. The export and import feature still works with the formatted text - it's because under the hood the formatted text is actually plain text using Markdown syntax, i.e. **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~.

If you like the app, please take some time to leave your feedback in the App Store! I really appreciate this!

Thank you for using Intelli Flashcards! I haven't been able to work on the app for a long time, out of personal reasons. Now I'm happy to make the next minor release which has following changes:
- internet search for pictures works again. Try it out! It's as simple as clicking the camera icon and entering the picture search term
- an option to deactivate auto-capitalization
- the text inside [square brackets] is ignored by Text-To-Speech feature
- iPhone X Support (not native though, the native one follows)
- if you learn a stack that is inside a collection, both name of the stack and collection are shown on the top
- camera image quality is adjustable
- Text-To-Speech: additional to languages you can select voices (male, female etc.)

If you have any questions, problems or requests, please consider writing me an email, I will be happy to hear from you! I write down the user's suggestions to estimate the demand for it, and the higher the demand - the higher is the probability that it will be implemented in the next release.

In the next version I am planning to change the design a little bit and to add a formatted text feature.

Please take a minute to rate the app in the App Store if you could make good use of it - describing how you use it and what progress you have made. I'm super proud of you all!
3.7.6
2016-02-08

- Synchronisation is performed in background if you allow it in the Settings App

In the next update I'm going to try to realise the most important features requested by all of you. They require some time to do research, planning, implementation and testing so it may take a couple of months to carry it out.

Now the syncing is safe.
- iCloud is significantly faster and performs most of the actions in the background
- iPad landscape bug fixed, where the left menu table disappeared after the app went to background

Dear user, I appreciate it that you've chosen Intelli Flashcards to manage you personal flash cards database. - You can organize your stacks into folders or collection. To assign a stack to the collection, just drag the stack underneath of it.
- Text-to-Speech function (good quality, offline). Assign a speech language in internal settings, and whenever you tap on the "back side text" of the flashcard, the text is spoken out lout.
- Own pictures. Now you can take a picture with your camera.
- Random order of flashcards. Whenever you start learning session, the cards are getting shuffled first - learning effect improved.

Thank you som much for your kind feedback! I'm using my app as intensively as you (learning Spanish and lately French), and it's great to hear you're proceeding with it as well. If it's not too cumbersome, would you please update your App Store rating? It's just two clicks, the old text is already there, if any. Wish you a great time using the Intelli App!

-----------Version 3.0.2
-iOS7 app crash fixed
-small change in learning session behavior, thanks to Isabel V. for pointing out!
-performance improvements

I appreciate your feedback, without you guys it would be impossible to build a better product! Thank you. And would you please send again your app review, if you've written one? It's just a few clicks, but does a great help for me, since every version, even with small changes, starts with empty reviews.

-----------Version 3.0

- in addition, I've fixed the CSV import problem. If you weren't able to import your CSV file, it is worth to give it a try now.

I'd like to hear your thoughts and feedback, and have fun with the application!

Bobby Lews,
Keep improving
After trying all the spaced repetition apps I use this app the most. I'm an engineer so I'm always envisioning ways for constant improvement upgrade.

My priority input would be to correct that the APP downgrades images to an unusable level in some instances wasting my time and effort. There definitely needs to be some user control!!!!

I'd also like to see alerts and reminders. Especially, an in app purchase for use with the Apple Watch. That would be amazing and really change my day to day life given I use this everyday. If you are constantly learning and studying like I am then this will be more than some app to you. Fortunately the developer is responsive to emails and active because this is more than just an app for some of us.

Other wish list items would be different options for algorithms to the spaced repetition. The app was free to download so definitely give it a try!!
Flash Cards!,
Intelli
This is a great App that is based on principles of adult learning: repetition, variety, randomness and self-pacing. Words you've learned reappear at a reduced frequency. Words that you are still learning re-appear more frequently. Want words in one language, or the reverse-- that's easy. Want them randomly mixed in not languages, that's easy too. Synching between devices makes the app versatile and device friendly. Highly recommended.
gilamonster1956,
Author seems dishonest about upgrade
This app lacks some of the bells and whistles of the other apps. I'm okay with that, I don't them anyway. After a few hours I figured out an efficient way to import cards. Again, I'm okay with that. After importing 50 cards, the app informed me, the free version has a 50 card limit. I don't remember seeing that before, but okay. A developer needs to make some coin. However, when I try to find out what the update costs whether it be through the app, on the author's web site, or in the Apple Store no info. It's as if he wants to trap you into paying - tap... tap... tap... Gotcha! Too late! Thanks for the $$. Seems pretty dishonest to me. I done with this guy.

Easy to use...
This app is very simple to use when you want to create and organize your own content. I am a Family Medicine Resident Dr and I am using it to study for my boards. I am not the best with technology and I love when it is user friendly done.

Enjoying this App
I have been loving this app for the last several days; the ease of use is extraordinary! As an additional bonus, I contacted the developer with a few additional questions, and he responded super quick with very thorough answers!
