Description

Things to know before you buy:

* This is a short game: about 90 minutes.
* The background music is anything but medieval. This is by design.
* It’s all a bit weird.

Explore what remains of the ancient city of San Francisco and experience dynamic combat in this RPG text game.

What if goblins, ogres, and dragons weren't imagined? What if our ancestors were, unwittingly, foretelling the future? Find yourself in that future, centuries from now, among the ruins of what was once the 21st century – where these terrifying creatures roam freely…

Heavily inspired by modern tabletop RPGs like Dungeon World, this game puts you in the shoes of a young necromancer on a quest. Battle monsters, raise the dead, and explore what remains of the ancient city of San Francisco.

Features:

* Dynamic Combat: Simulated to the level of individual body parts. Cleave off someone’s leg, take it, and bash it over their head! A Natural Language Generation system explains what's happening to you in plain English.

* Make Your Choices with Caution: Every action has consequences! Make a mistake in battle and you could lose recruits in your party.

* A Living, Breathing World: Lots of the text isn't pre-written, but generated. The world continues on without you.

* Quick Gameplay: Hop right into the fray! Experience automatic saving and no loading screens.

This game is a labor of love of a single writer-programmer, Filip Hracek, and a single illustrator, Alec Webb. It is relatively short, and can be finished in about 90 minutes.

The gameplay is closer to tabletop role playing games than to traditional computer RPGs. Instead of presenting you with numbers and graphics, the game tells you what's happening, the same way a dungeon master would. Things are still meticulously tracked in the background, but there are no big tables to look at or tactical maps to read.

Perfectly Optimized and Beautifully Made
I’ve been on a text RPG kick lately and was surprised to find a premium one on the RPG category. Very satisfied with my purchase after finishing the game. Very well written and plenty of great descriptions of the fantastical tower and everything in between. Fights are very well described in their brutality and choreography. My only real gripe is the lack of challenge and replay value. You definitely be in trouble if you squander your food resources and stamina/sanity as you’ll be at the mercy of the RNG at that point. But it feels pretty easy to manage your resources and I ended up only dying once at the end. Thankfully permadeath isn’t a thing here and you can easily reload a previous choice. Overall I loved the experience but the game could use some added challenge.

Most fun I've ever had with a text game
A game feels most exciting to me in the time before I start to understand how it works. In those early minutes, I am making decisions based on what my character would actually do in the situation, not min/maxing stats and numbers.

With its language-based approach, this game never let me see the numbers behind the curtain, and this kept me on my toes from start to finish. It reminded me of the depth of a game like Dwarf Fortress with its anatomy system. I was forced to put myself in the shoe (singular, my character was missing a foot) of the protagonist and think in the context of the fantasy future setting.

The game was polished and flaws were minor. I would have liked to hear more from my recruited party members for one. It felt easy since I finished without dying and with lots of food, but maybe that's the luck of the number generator. I'm unsure if I've missed many hidden parts of the game or if I've seen everything.

I beat the game feeling like I still wanted more combat, exploration, and dialog. I would buy a sequel or continuation with the same engine in a heartbeat.

110% worth it
This game is pretty short, but it is definitely entirely worth the (small) price of admission. I have never played a game like this before and wasn’t entirely sure how much I would like the format, but the music and the story pulled me in and I played the entire thing in one go. If a sequel or extension to this (or even a separate game in a similar style from the same dev) was ever released I would buy it in a heartbeat

A very unique experience
Wow, the only negative I have to say about this game is that it’s not longer!

This is a very unique story driven experience. It gives you enough choices where you actually have to think about what you’re doing, but not too much that it detracts from the story and breaks the immersion.

I definitely recommend it!

A fun little game
Not that long but an interesting concept and fun. Well worth the price.

Pretty sweet
Nice little game here. Runs really smooth and has great art. A bit linear for being an rpg and the game is more or less trivially easy. With that said it’s still a fun and charming experience that u would recommend

Not sure the point of the sanity mechanic though - seems to be no way to replenish it and no consequences from it.

I went back to the trader a few times to see if I could barter for some items but that didn’t appear to be an option here.

Would get a lot of joy out of playing a bigger more difficult game built with the same type of system.

Enjoyable, if a little pricey
This is a well-crafted and unfortunately short game. And while there are RPG-like decisions which can be made, I do not feel like they carried much weight in the game world. I do not know how much more I will get from more play-through

I would certainly be interested in a sequel with hopefully more story, world-building, and far-branching consequences of choices.
DominicTX,
Well done!
Pacing. Setting. Story. Concept. Characters. Dialog. Difficulty. All of it was spot on.
bflsnfms,
