Mate is equally helpful if you're mastering a new language, want to take down a language barrier when going abroad, or just occasionally need to translate a web page, email, message, etc.

Full list of supported languages:

Improved:
- Full-page translation in Safari. We rewrote the website translation script. It should be faster, friendlier, and more stable now. Previously, it failed to work on some sites (e.g. Medium.com), now it works perfectly on every site.

Fixed:
- Hebrew full page translation works well again in Safari.
- Issue with AirPods and other earphones was solved. Mate was speaking out via iPhone's loudspeaker even though the earphones were connected. Now it goes via earphones as intended.
- iOS keyboard autocompletion is back in the main app.
- Correct transliteration for Traditional Chinese.
- A couple of light - dark mode bugs were squashed.
- Copy button didn't work in the Safari extension, now it does.
- Safari extension's bar could look ugly on some sites due to CSS confilcts, now it's better.
- Speak-out for the original language didn't work in the Safari extension. We fixed it.
- A nasty sync bug was fixed. Previously, when you signed out, then erased your History and/or Phrasebook, and then sign in again, it would erase it on the server, as well. Now, it won't. All actions that you do when you're signed out stay on your device.

It's the biggest update we've ever shipped for Mate's iOS app! Without kidding, it's even larger than the initial Mate release. It's packed with 5 totally new features and a few dozens of smaller improvements.

Offline Mode

Yes, you're reading it correctly! From now on, Mate can translate offline, too. Just download offline packs for languages you need from the language picker and you're good to go. Packs are reasonably-sized — each of them is just around 50 MB. Please note offline translation come without synonyms and phonetic transcription, though.

Safari Extension

We added yet another way to translate seamlessly within iOS — now in Safari. With our brand new action extension you can translate words, sentences and even full pages without leaving Safari. Turn on Mate Extension from the share menu in Safari's toolbar.

Dark Mode

It's better late than never, right? Mate offers both light and dark modes now.

Smart Swap

Mate will always try to understand the input language itself even if you forget to set it correctly.

More Data About Words

Now Mate shows phonetic transcription for the original, too. We also added support for genders for languages like French, German, Spanish, Italian, etc.

All-New Speech Translator

Mate's Speak & Translate feature was redesigned from the ground up. It's not a separate screen anymore. You can start talking to Mate by simply tapping on the microphone icon in the input field. Pretty much the same way as audio message in WhatsApp or Telegram work. The words will appear in the field on the fly.

Updated Home Screen Quick Actions

Long tap on Mate's icon on home screen to access our revamped quick actions. You can start speech or clipboard translation from there.

Better Look on iPad

We owe an apology to iPad users that Mate was a downright iPad-hostile app up until this moment. We optimized every screen and extension to look and feel natively on iPad.

Speed and Stability Improvements

Phonetic transcription should never fail to load, translation speed became considerably faster.

Enhanced Copy Options

You can copy phonetic transcription (or transliteration) too now. Just long tap on it.

Bugs Fixed and Smaller Improvements

- Mate won't interrupt your music playback when using the speak-out feature anymore.
- We polished Mate's look on iPhone X, XR, Xs (Max), and 11.
- We made the main screen cleaner and more solid.
- We localized Mate into a bunch of new languages. We also polished old localizations. All in-app copy should've become more clear and concise.

Mate is also available for Mac and as a browser extension for all major browsers:

SMF12357899,
Great!
I’ve tried many translation apps and this one has definitely been the best. Translates web content very quickly in Safari, and will export the text in new language into other programs…. Super helpful.
Translations seem to be about as accurate as Google, but honestly haven’t closely compared. Just love the functionality of this program specifically, and only use this one.
YachtieM,
How about native speakers saying the phrase?
Ok, I haven’t had this app very long and it looks pretty decent in what I’ve tried to use it for. However... it would be nice to have a native speaker say the phrase of the language? I tried Maori and it was a man with a notable ‘British’ accent, the same speaker and accent used for the English phrase while I was trying to figure out how to get the app to say the Maori phrase. Yes, that would be a lot of work to add in, but for those of us learning languages, it would be nice to hear a more authentic accent. I would also be nice to have an audio of both phrases versus just the audio of the phrase showing up on the top row. I had English wanting to hear it in Maori, so the English was showing on top. When I switched the langague (what gets translated) I at first got English twice. I had to copy the Maori, switch the languages around to get Maori as the language to be translated into English. On the first try, the audio stayed with the English, then when I copied and pasted I got the ‘British’ male speaking Maori with a a ‘British’ accent. Didn’t try other languages to see if that was consistent across other languages. Important details for those using the app to help learn a language!
Sarassine,
Credit where credit is due...
The developers listen to their customer base and that has to be applauded! The latest update got rid of all connections to analytics domains and now the app is truly a private alternative to Google Translate (as well as being a better translator in my opinion). I will buy the Mac version and recommend Mate to my friends. Great job, developers!

Update: the app's privacy policy is reassuring to a point, but the developers still make use of Amplitude Analytics. While this is much better than Google analytics, it is still a dealbreaker to me as I refuse to use any apps that connect to analytics domains.
Please consider adding an option to turn off all analytics. The vast majority of users will leave them on, but it will reassure the privacy conscious among us. Thank you.
GrnEyedLady,
Welsh translating
On the one hand this is virtually the only app that which will translate Welsh at all, which makes me nuts, so 5/5 for that.
Second, it does a passable job for 1860's-1900 Welsh to English, which is extremely commendable so 5+/5.

On the other hand, the app seems to not apply grammar rules to more complex sentences (more descriptors) or not-ideal punctuation in newspapers before the turn of the century (1900s). Since it's a descriptive, poetic language - and not the only one that is different than 'subject-verb' being able to translate to grammatically correct English would be a huge help....3/5
There are basic words that will translate correctly in the lists below the usually-correctly-translated word if you do just the word (Ehedydd = Sylark or Lark, not Skyper; Eos = Nightingale) yet the app won't translate them at all (ie, "Eos Cynlais" & "Ehedydd Cynlais" remain exactly as is) - four instance these are titles: either 'Cynlais Nightingale' or 'Skylark of Cynlais' for the second one, as Cynlais is a geographical name.
More extensive music, poetry, land features, mining and farming terminology would probably be an additional help for those of us trying to translate for either history or genealogy use.
Laurie
lipatovroman,
Not so good as for Mac
Actually, I purchased this app because I love desktop Mate for Mac.
But mobile version have some things which I don like.
The main thing is that we need to press Enter or button to get translation. I used google translate for years on my mobile, and it translates text immediately after entering. Then we typing second word, and google translate displays translate for both words. It cool.
And voices. In Mate voices sounds as outdated voices generator. Google translate have very humanized voices. It’s not big problem. But google translate is free, Mate is not cheap.
ifyouseekayofferfancyfood,
Translation app
to all those who helped create this app thank you, your effort is greatly appreciated by me for sure, in todays world this tool is necessary and needed and can really be a difference maker for any one that’s in another country besides their own, to anyone who’s interested in apps like this, they’ve provided a free trial of it so give it a try, it could be just what you need at the right time,,,
margo79,
Thanks for showing customer appreciation!!!
Much appreciated that the developer provided free lifetime access to customers who were early adopters after going to subscription-based pricing! Customer loyalty goes a long way and there have been many app developers have not been as loyal!! Thank you and also for this feature-rich app.
Dawsonfp,
Worth It!
In an age of privacy violating “free” apps and the onslaught of the alternative Subscription/Service model, this app is a beautiful example of how well done the classic model of “paying once and owning forever” can be. Even more, this app is more feature rich, simple to use, and capable than many of it’s alternatives. A shining light of an app, you should buy it now!
JöíFabü,
Please Fix This Feature
When selecting text in safari to translate on iOS 16, I have to manually select which language it is every single time in order for the translation to load. Please enable the ability for the app to do it ok it’s own without having to select which language is to be translated within safari. Other than that works great!
E_Mitch1218,
Disappointing!
Hopes were built high: I am a language learner, and this seed like it was just too good to be true...this does everything I have ever dreamed! However, it doesn't. It doesn't sync, it doesn't work on Chrome, and even if it did, I wouldn't know because Customer Service never answered any of my questions. I just want to go to a website, click on a word, see what said word means, have the application save my word for easy review. Yep, it's just quicker to share a word to the "share" and open/save to another app. So sad.
