raygungirl,
Great for vocab & learning to read quickly
Update August 2017: Apparently this company just disappeared off the face of the earth. Their twitter account hasn't been updated since 2014 and this app hasn't been updated since 2015. I wasn't able to log in so I don't even know if the app still works. Shame. I paid money for this & the French one & really enjoyed them but I guess they've been abandoned now. They should probably be removed from the store if they don't work anymore.

--- original review below ---

The mini games are really addictive and fun, and it's nice to have a choice of which games you want to play, it gives the lessons a little variety. Animations, sound and music are all top notch. I wish there was more information about the words and phrases, and anything about grammar, really. This app is basically a way to learn vocab and learn how to read kanji, hiragana and katakana - some of the timed games will make you recognize kanji almost faster than you can consciously think about what you're looking at, which is fun. But I don't know how useful this app would be to someone who hasn't also taken Japanese classes, or tried to teach themselves the language before getting this app. You will probably want to study on your own in addition to playing these games, if you really want to learn.
Marxer8788,
This app is the best...but needs some work
This app is an amazingly fun way to learn Japanese and by far my favorite. I would say it is definitely worth the money to get all the lessons. The only thing that stopped me from giving it five stars is that it says that you've "mastered" vocabulary after beating so many games but the formula for learning is off. I've now "mastered " 16 lessons but hardly remember any of them if I had not made flash cards outside of the game. I would also like the developers to make it where I can complete quests from previous lessons. Some quests are just ridiculous to do when you just start a lesson. This app could use some attention and updating but it is still my favorite.
Otakucraze,
I love this app, but don’t download
This app was fun with mini games that really helped me learn the language. I knew nothing of the language but found myself learning the words and the hiragana quickly and effortlessly and that is what was really difficult for me in Japanese was the reading and writing.

For the first time ever I purchased the pack for Japanese, I don’t buy apps but because I was enjoying learning the language and was actually learning the characters with the words it was worth it to buy the pack. I ended to ease off the app because I didn’t know when I was going to Japan as my previous plans dropped.

When I had confirmation that I was moving to Japan I picked up the app and started relearning what I had previously. Then I updated my phone about a month before I left for Japan.... the app was and has not been updated. I can’t use the app whatsoever. The other apps I have tried don’t work as well as this one did to help me learn the language and I am destroyed inside. I now have lived in Japan for two weeks and am struggling to read the characters on everything even though I am picking up conversational Japanese fast. Just as I foresaw. I need this app to be updated but as other reviewers have noted they just disappeared, even though I paid for the pack it doesn’t matter. I’m sad to say don’t download this if you have iOS 11, you can’t use this amazing system to learn a language. And for that I am sorry.
Amy tag,
PLEASE UPDATE FOR IOS 11
I really really really love this app!! I’ve had it for years and recently I decided to get back into using it to learn Japanese. Today I updated to iOS 11 and if I knew I wouldn’t be able to continue to use the app I wouldn’t have. I can’t even open it! This app helps so much and is probably the main thing keeping me on my schedule of learning. I see that there’s been nothing from mindsnacks in about 3 years on social media which is scary, I think their last update for the app was 2 years ago. It doesn’t look like they have done anything to their website in about that long too. I hope that even if they aren’t making more apps or improvements that they at least update it for iOS 11. I don’t see many people asking for this so I’m not sure and I don’t think getting ahold of them on social media will happen seeing how long they’ve been absent. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE update this app and all your language apps for anyone else that might still use them!! I’ll be very sad if I can’t continue learning my lessons on here because I haven’t found anything like it and I really hope this isn’t the end for it!! I hope someone reads this and can do something.
Butterwaffle,
Flashcards for the 21st century!
This app is a really great way to improve your vocabulary and learn some simple phrases. There are several games and each tests you in different ways. Most are timed so that you are encouraged to develop a feel for the words and instead of just converting everything to English and back again. However, they do not penalize you for being slow, so just be patient as you get up to speed.

The weak areas are that there is a syllabary for hiragana and katakana (the Japanese symbols used to specify pronunciation) but no training to help you learn reading them individually – only as parts of words. There are no writing exercises. The games also focus heavily on individual words and phrases but not on getting you to synthesize sentences of your own. But the exercises that are there are much better than anything I've seen. Even Rosetta, which is excellent and more focused on synthesis, is not nearly as polished or fun!
KellyLS,
Great for learning and reinforcing what you have learned.
I had used the Mindsnack Japanese app. It was excellent when it works on iOS 10. It was well worth the money and then some. It was great for both learning and reinforcing things you had learned. And seemed to work especially well if you were using the GENKI books to learn.

Unfortunately the app is not 64 bit and that’s why it has not been updated to iOS 11 or later. My assumption is that the company didn’t want to pay to have to recode the whole application in order to be updated for 64-bit standard that iPhone users now. I had emailed the company asking if they were planning to release an update for iOS 11 and was told that they have no plans to do so.

I really hope this changes in the future as this app was really good. I love playing it and it really helped with speech recognition for words and numbers. I would highly recommend this if it still worked. Maybe in the future they will update it. But at the moment, they said no.

I was really disappointed when it no longer function on my iPhone. I’m getting a new phone soon so perhaps I May just revert my old iPhone back to iOS 11 just to play this.

I give it a five star only because if you’re using iOS 10 this app is really good and well worth the money. If you update your phone after that it won’t work for you unfortunately.

Daisuki<3 ^-^
I love this app! Its layout & display are very clear, easy-to-understand and fun; easy on the eyes. It's youthful combination of sounds and animations are entertaining. One of thee best apps I've come a across. It's ad-free in both the free and paid version. For an affordable fee of $4.99 this app offers many more lessons with the bang for your buck. Overall, I'm definitely satisfied with this app, well-made. Kudos to its creators! 👍🏼

I used to attend Japanese School, and use this app to help me freshen up my memory. I do know for a fact that the last hiragana character in the chart is actually "wo" in Romanized Japanese and is supposed be the 2nd to last character (before"n"). The first "o" is fine, there is only one "o" in Japanese. I've also never heard the term "romaji" I refer to it as, "Romanized Japanese", that's how I was taught in college at least.
Candy_Grimn,
Yayyy!!!
I got this about ichi hour and a half ago to ni hours ago, and now i know my japanese numbers up to nijuu!! 😄 i am so happy yay! It was super easy to follow, my favorite was the belly mode. I wish they had more lessons though for letters, or even more numbers for free. 😌 but i really recommend this app for children, really any age, but for someone who might be a slow learner cause there are a lot of instructions so you get it, instead of leaving you out in the road to die. This has 4 modes that i am aware of, 20 numbers that you can learn and master, and a bunch of kinda random numbers in my opinion. What are you still reading this for? Just get it already!!
carterbella9,
Amazing way to learn a language!
This app is wonderful! I have always wanted to learn Japanese and now I am well on my way to knowing this language! The layout is clean and easy to understand, and the mini games for mastering vocabulary are fun and engaging! It has vocalization along with every word to help with pronunciations! There is also a section where you can review mastered vocabulary so you can always practice the ones you have already learned! The only real challenge is that you need to learn the two alphabets on your own, but once you have that down this app is perfect! Highly recommend to anyone looking to learn a language!
Pinkymia123star,
Awesome
I don't think there's enough room to say how much are feeling I love it so much! It's fun captivating and you can either a brother who is studying Japanese and wants nothing to do with it all loves it! We just couldn't stop playing the games and he even learn Japanese words I never got understand not to speak English words too so that's one of my starting point of this review, that I just want to say please buy it it's worth the money learning a lot and equipment time I give it five stars the only thing that might be wrong about that uses the word on that ANATA but that's not a big deal anyway I give it five stars thank you so much mindsnacks!!!
