Description

Letter Workbook is one of Sherston's most popular iPad apps and it is now available for the iPhone too!

Letter Workbook is an interactive educational app which teaches toddlers and children how to form and write letters. Through the simple, interactive guide children will learn how to write their ABC, improve vocabulary and have fun along the way!

How it works

Children can choose between uppercase and lowercase letters and each letter has interactive dots which show the child how to create the shape of the letter with their finger. This is in the same direction and format as they will learn at school, based on the UK national curriculum. Once they have practised the shape of the letter, they are able to follow the dots to create the letter outline. Next, a clear audio instruction asks the child to trace the letter without the guide. This will help your child to develop their letters quickly, step by step.

When a letter is completed the child will receive a green tick icon with sound indicating that the letter traced is correct. When the letter is traced incorrectly there will be a red cross icon which encourages the child to look at previous examples and trace the letter again.

The exercises can be repeated as many times as the child likes so that they are able to write and recognise letters in no time!

KFC............,
My son preferred this to playing outside with friends…
My son has had problems writing his letters since pre-K. I have been looking for apps to help him write correctly (top to bottom and left to right). He really likes this app and chose to continue using it rather than go outside and play with a friend who came knocking on the door.

I read the other reviews about the speech impediment of the child who speaks the letters. I didn't even realize that there was speaking on the app, and then I realized sound has been turned off every time we've used it. After listening to the voice, I will make sure that the sound is ALWAYS turned off. That way I don't have to worry about my son picking up poor pronunciation habits.

Glitchy
Keeps auto shut down and won’t let us upgrade (on a 2013 iPad). But it seems like an ok app when it works.

Keep auto shut down it doesn’t let us upgrade
I had upgrade to this app years ago I change my I pad and I can’t upgrade it now
Perrysmama,
Pretty good
This app has a lot of potential. However I have found two problems with it.
First, the child's voice that says the letters is cute, but pronounces them wrong as if with a speech impediment. This is a problem for children who are trying to learn proper pronunciation. Especially noticeable with pronunciation of the letter "r".
Second, a few of the letters are not correct. The lower case "r" does not have enough of a "hook" on it. It looks like a type written "r". When
handwritten however, it does not look like a lower case "r". When teaching handwriting the "hook" needs to be more pronounced because we tend to shorten our letters when writing by hand. The end result will be an "r" that looks like a strange lower case "i". Also the lower case "y" is more cursive in style.
I may seem too picky, but as a mom who has a son that struggles with speech and handwriting, these two things are important. It is hard to unlearn things that have been learned the wrong way.
Otherwise this is a great app that provides immediate reinforcement for correct answers and a gentle lack of reinforcement for letters not written correctly.
LukeAWeese,
Can't print completed work
Love this ap overall! Please give the option to print The completed workbook. Almost didn't purchase the full version because the A crosses lower than the dotted line. Also, the V & the Z are said very weird (z is said like ZEY & V is said like WEE. Also the picture for V is vase & it sounds like they say wee-sss). Doesn't hinder my daughter from practicing her letters properly, but hopefully they can fix those few small glitches.
Readers 2 Leaders,
A good start...
I like the workbook style of this app, and the sound effects. But as a literacy instructor, I feel there are some key things that are missing.

1. Letter sounds...I wish that students heard the sound, instead of just the name and then a word with the target letter in the initial position. Students need to hear letter sounds much more often than the letter name.

2. The writing freehand is a great feature that sets this app apart from many others. However, it allows students to begin letters in the wrong position,as long as the finished product "matches" the exemplar well enough. This is not ideal for setting students up for cursive or for reducing confusion/letter reversals.

Best Handwriting App!
We downloaded every app to find one that you could easily switch letters. Both uppercase and lower case. This app exceeded our expectations, we purchased the full version almost immediately and our 4.5 yr old daughter loves it. One nice feature is the review after the letter is complete. Parents can see where and why your child is struggling on a letter. Leaving the child to explore on their own and you still seeing what they've been working on.
HigginsOTA,
OT
I am an OT in the school system and have found this app to be motivating with my kids (just using the free version), however when working on correct letter formation I don't like that it allows the student to start at the bottom and draw upwards. We strongly enforce top down when working on formation in out district. Another feature that is nice is the speed component that it requires you to use, but it would be helpful is you could adjust the speed so beginning writers were more successful. If these features were fixed I'd definitely purchase this app.

Want more!!!
I would love to rate this app a 5 star but I want more!! I paid the $1.99 for the upgrade. I would love lowercase letters as well. And a place where I can put letters together to make up my own words like names would be great! This app has a lot of potential so that my son can work on writing words. My son is 7 and is bellow basics in hand writing. I would love to use this app to help build his fine motor skills.

Disappointed
This app has the potential to be wonderful. My daughter just turned 3 and is learning to write and is doing great! Your app is a good way to teach kids to correctly execute writing a letter but it is way too critical. My daughter has frowns faces all over her board even though 75% of her letters are perfect; they just didn't meet your very high requirements. It's very discouraging to a child to constantly have Xs pop up when they are doing the best they can with their still-developing motor skills.
