Description

Never draw a lighting setup on a scrap of paper again.

Lighting Designer is a quick and intuitive way to create overhead lighting plots for film, theater, television, concerts, and anything else you can light. The wide selection of equipment and simple yet powerful interface makes it easier than ever to illustrate and communicate your lighting setups, all from your versatile mobile device. Your iPad is a larger canvas and a great presentation tool; your iPhone will go with you anywhere. And if you like, your Plots will sync among all your iOS devices, so you can start plotting on one and finish on another.

LD is perfect for tech scouts, working while traveling, or just choosing the couch over your desk chair. While expensive drafting programs can take hours to use and years to master, Lighting Designer is an accessible way to plan your next show!

Features:
• Organize your setups into Shows, with details like shooting dates and crew members
• Choose from over 2000 built-in types of lights, grip equipment, camera gear, actors, and objects like furniture and musical instruments
• With a Crescit Premium account, you can have access to an additional 25,000+ pieces of lighting equipment, gels, and gobo templates
• Use your own images to create custom fixtures on your Plots (read the User Guide for image specs)
• For each light, specify wattage, beam spread, light output, DMX address, color, and many other details
• Certain fixtures include info for exposure approximation; all can be user-configured and have their exposure reverse-calculated from real-world readings
• Use Groups to create flexible collections of lights
• Notes allow you to describe every detail of your setup
• Pack your Truck to share gear among multiple Plots
• Draw a Floor Plan using basic shapes, and images from your device
• Lights can target other objects, and objects can rig onto each other for easy adjustments
• Email editable Plots to the crew, with images, equipment, and crew lists
• Undo/Redo functionality
• Optional iCloud sync
• Dark Mode presents a dark workspace to reduce eyestrain and minimize your device's light in a dark environment

You'll still be prompted to set a Role when you target another Object, but you can edit roles at any time with a press-and-hold on the Unit, or in its detail table, regardless of whether it's targeting another object.

Roles are also editable in the Patch table. You can sort or filter by Role in the Patch and Units tables, and Roles are also listed in all Unit cells next to Model.
3.6.3

Add a visible border to your Plot, and adjust its color, width, and inset from the edge.

Allow LD to calculate the optimal size based on your objects' placement, or set the borders yourself. The full-resolution render will use this setting to determine the final image size.
3.6.2
2020-03-22
This version adds a major feature: full-resolution Plot rendering.

No more Photoshopping frame grabs together; now you can have LD automatically generate a printable version of your creations, no matter how large. The "Save Screen to Photos" option is still there, but in a restructured, simpler menu, and rendering now takes advantage of GPU power for much faster speeds. And for quick access, you can use the Command-R keystroke. Check out the User Guide for all the details.

A few other improvements and bug fixes as well!

3.6.0
2020-03-06
Welcome to iOS 13! This new version makes good use of some new system features, adds some great new touches of its own, and, of course, fixes bugs.

Improvements:
Stealth mode now has a third option: to follow the iOS system dark mode setting (you can still choose always light or dark, and change at any time)
Units, Lifts, and Gels can be scaled to a percentage of their true size
Patch list overhaul that allows for Gel copy/paste/add, re-ordering, Unit descriptions, and easier changes, plus lots of keyboard shortcuts
Shape Image auto-sizer enables sizing a floor plan image based on the known length of a certain dimension within the image (set two endpoints and it will resize)
Objects MUST BE SELECTED before they can be moved (which makes it easier to scroll around the Plot without accidentally moving an Object)
When Gels are on a Unit, their order can be changed on the Plot, in the Unit detail table, or in the Patch list
Gels can be rotated
Type a range for Unit DMX addresses, to change the DMX range automatically
If using feet as the units of measure, type in ft' in" to convert to decimals automatically
When an Object is selected, it displays nickname, DMX address, and Gels, regardless of its text display settings
Option to turn off DMX address conflict warning
Plot title can be changed when the Plot is opened, or the Plot can be saved as a copied Plot with a new name
New look and increased efficiency for multi-moving Objects
Plot fonts are slightly thicker for consistency
Snap Proximity allows the scope of Snapping to be limited to what's on screen or what's close by
Snap menu expanded to include Snap Proximity and Units of Measure, and appears all the time
Bottom action buttons (delete, undo/redo, lock, etc) get blurred backgrounds so they're more visible even on crowded Plots
Sort Objects table by their Model property (learn to use it!)
New detail table cells show Model and hide/solo/lock settings with accent colors
When objects are solo-ed, the Plot menu displays a notification so mysteriously hidden objects can be displayed
Pointer labels are displayed on other side of targeting Object when it's too close to target Object (instead of hiding)
Shapes can be flattened selectively; choose 2 or more to combine into an image Shape, rather than all of them
Crescit LightShop Library accounts can sign in with autofill password info
User Guide obeys dark mode setting

New objects:
Notation Objects like Triangle, Square, Null etc now have more size and display options
Gel scrims and half-scrims

Bug fixes:
Table view search bars might not appear
Some locked objects would re-appear after rendering an image
Fixed Object text layout problems
Fixed a bug that could make the opacity slider not show up
Fixed problems with copying or deleting Objects with rigged Objects
No snapping to hidden Objects
No more dumping Plot Object images when app receives memory warning
Fixed problem with pointer exposure reading not changing when Gel was deleted
Fixed problem with cropping Text Shape
Fixed problem with Plot zoom jumping
3.5.2
2019-05-24
This version features an expansion of LD's Snap functionality, including a new easy-access menu and button, plus more snap points per object.

Improvements:
New bottom button for toggling Snap on/off, plus press-and-hold for a snap options list and grid selector
More snapping options; all objects now snap to and from centers, endpoints, and resize handles
Shapes display rig points
Line Shapes now snap to each others' ends and join intersections for smooth corners
Door Shapes show as opened 90º
Added doors and windows with multiple segments
Added the "Choose Groups" table for single and multiple Objects, for quicker Groups assignment
No longer shows Group stroke color in bottom controls
Protects against accidentally triggering a bottom screen swipe-up gesture while editing a Plot on devices without home buttons
Objects show their nickname and DMX channel when selected, even if hidden usually
Units restore their original color and rotation if they are dragged over other objects but not permanently rigged
Username and password suggestion for Crescit login
Stepper cell text field adjusts text smaller to ensure showing all numbers

Bug Fixes:
LD does not keep asking for permission to "look user up by email"
Better layout for modal views on devices with bottom "safe area" (without home button)
Problem selecting and deselecting multiple objects
Problem changing beam spread on Crescit fixtures
Could not type Lux or FC values in Beam Setup table
Crash when changing FPS or changing between shutter angle/shutter speed in Beam Setup table
Fixed problem selecting and moving Shapes: Line, Window, Distance
Shapes list now displays Hide/Solo/Lock values properly
Window Shapes drawing incorrectly
3.5.1
2019-04-23
Quick bug fixes for the new version.

Improvements:
Made Group assignment easier for non-selected objects (especially non-Rail objects)

Bug Fixes:
Possible crash when editing Unit beam setup
On older devices, sync might not resume after Plot is rendered but not closed
Crash if f/90 is selected in f-stop picker
Possible for f-stop decimal to jump down .1 after being set
Tapping Enter after editing an Object detail value might not save that value
Potential crash when attempting to retrieve iCloud user name for Sync menu
Gels did not set contrasting stroke color when created
Fixes to Undo action naming
Potential crash when converting Gel to "Custom" type based on existing Gel
3.5.0
2019-04-17
This new version adds a big one: Custom Units! Now you can add your own Units with full targeting and rigging capabilities, using your own images, and configure beam and exposure. Check out the User Guide for ideal image specifications.

New Features:
Custom Units
Configure beam properties for any Unit, for photometric calculations
Set Plot mid-tone exposure in foot-candles or lux (in addition to f-stop)
Unit beams end at Plot mid-tone for quick visual reference

Improvements:
Object creation views hide image when keyboard is shown, to ensure visibility on iPad Mini and iPhone
Now easier to add Objects to Groups by dragging crosshairs
Group assignments do not change individual Objects' hide/solo/lock properties
Option to not set Primary Group when adding new Objects from Groups list
Units with spot/flood show slider instead of five options
Smoother object dragging and snapping
Unit dimmer curve defaults to linear
Show detail Plots grid layout more specific to device screen size

Bug Fixes:
LD would not save new Group descriptions
Unit pointers would not switch colors properly when Stealth mode was turned on or off
Potential crash with multi-object table and Grip objects
Potential crash when adding object to Plot from Truck
Fixed problem with importing Crescit fixtures from emailed Plots (older exported Plots will import correctly now)

miketluu,
Excellent but still doesn’t have all of the basics
I love this for making plots super quick BUT, it is limited to 4 universes. When rigs now have way beyond that. So I cannot do this for larger rigs or even distributed rigs. Such a bummer I had to put this app on the back burner for now.
jlamdp,
Potentially great but buggy
I love the app for doing my overheads. Would however love desktop / laptop support and synchronization so I’m not stuck with only using my iPad.

Also the recent update is extremely buggy, ‘LD’ is constantly asking for permission to let others look me up my email and when I say don’t allow or allow it just pops up over and over again. This forced me to restart my iPad multiple times and im extremely concerned if I have to reinstall the app if it keeps happening, would I potentially lose my plots ?!
adrian sierkowski,
Clunky
Really regret wasting my cash on this app. It’s incredibly clunky and counter intuitive. Having to link things (like a gel) to a light by going into another menu as opposed to just writing it in a box is insane. Why can we select a 12x12 solid, for example, but if we want to show a 12x12 grid we need to “attach” another object?
Where are the reports of total units and total watts/amps?

It also seems the units are not to scale
brytlights,
Great program, very helpful
Just started using this program and thus far, I’m a huge fan. I feel like a laptop version is critical, but small steps...

I really appreciate the level of control and the density of the functionality and detail you can add and manipulate. Clearly a lot of time and thought went into this. Haven’t gotten deep enough to add truck/ crews / contact info but am looking forward to seeing how that works.

Having done my plots and layouts by hand previously this is a huge help.

bobbyboi,
I life the potential of this app.
I do like the potential that this app has but one thing that i feel is missing, maybe i just cant figure it out, is the ability to type in room measurements instead of dragging. For instance when adding a rectangle shape it would be nice in the measurement bubble to type in the measurement when i tap it.
JoshLawson,
Idea
I think having some templates or demo shows might help make it easier to understand at first
Kayso Dipp,
Do NOT waste your money
App barely works. Yes the idea is great but the interface is fiddly, whole thing is buggy, and it crashes when you do basically anything. Can’t even render a simple lighting plot. App just keeps crashing every couple things I do. Paid way too much for an app that I can’t even use.
Sc1onious,
Buggy
Spent 2 hours building a lighting diagram for a job, for this program to irreversibly undo an hour of my work like it was the cool thing to do. Buggy as hell. Freezes and crashes, doesn't save your work, awful awful app.

EDIT:
Gave this another try- still crashes unexpectedly from time to time, but it’s not losing my work anymore, which is a solid step in the right direction.

Really cool features being added since last I tried the app, but I think a stable app should be highest priority over features.
Ben Bowen,
Great App In Theory
This app is really cool in the sense that I can create really organized lighting plots for my crew. However, it crashes so frequently that it becomes borderline un-usable. If the developer fixes the bugs this app would make a great tool, however it has a long way to go.
Kool brezz,
It’s great
Makes camera positioning easy
