Description

LinguaBrowse is the ultimate web browser for reading foreign-language native materials. It assists in the study of 30+ languages, with special support for English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and German (see full list at end of description).

It offers the following tools:

• TAP-TO-DEFINE: Look up word definitions in a popup dictionary with a single tap.

• DICTIONARIES FOR YOU: LinguaBrowse supports 900 different dictionaries, both bilingual (e.g. English→French and French→English) and monolingual (English→English and French→French).

• TAP-TO-SPEAK: Hear how words sound (via text-to-speech) with a single tap.

• VOCABULARY LIST: Automatically build a vocabulary list of any words you find yourself needing to define.

• TRANSCRIPTIONS: See how to pronounce words, for languages that don't use Roman characters (eg. Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Russian, and more).

• DEFINE SUB-WORDS: For compound words (eg. German compound nouns), define any sub-word. Disclaimer: may not work in all cases.

• NORMALISE FORM: Look up the definition for a word either as-is, or via its dictionary form (where available) for more reliable results.

You can also show/hide transcriptions (to test your comprehension), adjust text size (eg. if Chinese characters are too small), and disable links (to define words embedded in a link). Web pages visited in Safari can also be shared directly to LinguaBrowse.

A huge update that I've been working on for two years!

I've rewritten LinguaBrowse from scratch as a cross-platform app to allow me to develop it simultaneously for iOS and macOS. This is the first step: the iOS edition. Later will follow a macOS 10.15 edition.

All the same old features are present, except I've finally decided to remove system dictionaries, as the web dictionaries open far more quickly and work cross-platform.

Significantly, there's now a first-time setup (and introduction) flow, and a user accounts system. This will allow me to offer a LinguaBrowse Web companion website one day that could do cool things with the vocabulary collected while using the LinguaBrowse app.

The web browser is now more polished, too. The bars retract properly, giving you plenty of screen space, and there are navigation buttons and whatnot.

An invisible (but likely welcome) change to the monetisation model is also made. I'm moving from a subscription-based model to a one-off purchase model. We'll see how it goes. If you're already a paying subscriber, I believe you'll now have the app for free and your subscription should stop auto-renewing (as I'll have removed the subscription in-app-purchase from sale); please get in contact if there are any unexpected problems.

Thank you to everyone who supported LinguaBrowse up until now to make this development possible!
2.2.4
2020-05-23
Bugfix: I've updated the URL for the Chinese -> English web dictionary, as the original dictionary website sadly no longer exists.
2.2.3
2019-11-16
This release introduces enables support for iOS 13 and introduces various bug fixes. If you are experiencing any problems with using LinguaBrowse, please make sure that you install this update!

– Taps on the webpage now perform dictionary lookup at the correct position in iOS 13.

– Taps on the webpage now perform dictionary lookup at the correct position in landscape mode, respecting the safe area for the first time.

– I've removed the "system dictionary is installed" checker from the Configure menu because it's laggy and only worked in a small number of cases to begin with (which break over time out of my control).

– Navigation bars that weren't blue are now blue.

As always, thank you for using LinguaBrowse!
2.2.2
2019-03-14
Two significant improvements:

– Performance optimisation for Japanese (now produces 33% less DOM elements per page render)
– Significant bug-fix for Chinese (sentences will no longer be truncated if they include a space); may fix related bugs in other languages (excluding Japanese, Thai, and Korean), too!

Last version (2.2.1) brought support for dynamic-content web pages, so I'd furthermore highly recommend updating if you're still behind that version!
2.2.1
2019-03-08
A huge feature update that I've been waiting two years to deliver! LinguaBrowse finally supports dynamic websites (i.e. those that add text to the page after the static source has all been loaded), e.g.:

– social media (news feeds)
– PWAs, single-page web apps
– live news
– IM clients
– shopping sites

Please keep me informed – preferably on Twitter, @LinguaBrowse – in case you experience any errors with this new approach!
2.1.1
2019-02-10
A couple of bugfixes here (the first one greatly improving quality of life):

– Improved whitespace handling for all languages. Whitespace will be preserved even when links or styled text feature in a paragraph.
– Guard against window.webkit being overwritten (for websites that rudely overwrite it)
2.1.0
2018-12-17
Vocabulary lists!

– automatically build lists of any difficult words encountered
– search & delete entries
– get definitions in-app
– sync across iOS devices
– export vocab list to CSV for flashcard study
2.0.0
2018-12-05
Monetisation model changed from ad-supported to subscription-supported. This will allow me to focus on implementing new features without having to determine how to monetise them and isolate them if not purchased. This will greatly simplify the upcoming feature roadmap (OCR for images; processing of PDFs; vocabulary lists; distribution to extra platforms; etc.).

With the removal of the ads framework, the app bundle size should reduce and the privacy policy practically reduces to nothing. I'll work to reduce the bundle size (potentially by up to 180 MB) with on-demand downloads in time.
1.3.4
2018-06-28
Some minor bug fixes:

• Fixed the installation status identification algorithm for the German, German-English, and Dutch-English system dictionaries (until such time as the dictionaries update with different word-sets again and I have to revisit this).

• Fixed a few errors introduced as a result of migrating to Swift 4.1 – although these weren't present in any released build, anyway.

Thanks for the error report that led to the discovery of the dictionary identification error!
1.3.3
2018-05-28
• GDPR goodness: Ads are now non-personalised (regardless of whether you're an EU user).
• Fixed a highly-likely crash with the Glosbe dictionaries. Don't know whether it's a Swift 4 bug, but this may have affected most few users!
• Added a convenient screen for reviewing LinguaBrowse from in-app.
1.3.2
2018-03-26
Minor bugfix update.

BUGFIXES
• You can now visit URLs that include Chinese characters (and presumably all UTF-8 characters).
• The tooltip menu for non-dictionary-form words is no longer transparent.
1.3.1
2018-01-08
Happy New Year! This update brings in greatly enhanced support for at least 9 languages! Other languages should also benefit indirectly (except for Chinese, which isn't affected as it doesn't have all those pesky conjugations, inflections, or non-dictionary form words!).

NEW FEATURES
• [iOS 11 and above only] Greatly enhanced support for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, and Korean: Where possible, words tapped are now reduced to their dictionary forms and/or sub-parts (unless the whole phrase is found in the system dictionary), and the option to search by each different form is offered.

... So, for example in French, "l'une" will be split up into "l'" and "un". In English, "downloading" will be split into "downloading" and "download". In German, compound nouns like "geisteswissenschaftliche" will be split up into "geist", "wissen", "schaft", "liche"! The text processing tools are pretty inconsistent in reality though, so just be happy when/if it helps out! I think you may need to have installed the dictionaries and/or keyboards associated with the languages to gain full text processing ability.

A last-minute pre-holidays bug-fix update:

========================
=== 1.2.1 (this version)
========================
BUG FIXES
• The transcription visibility toggler button now always reflects the correct active/inactive state (but for real this time >_>).
• For those horribly common websites that temporarily have iframes, yet remove them after a few seconds, transcription visibility toggling and tapping on words should work more reliably now.
========================

========================
=== 1.2.0 (previous version)
========================
NEW FEATURES
• Long-needed first-time usage setup tutorial added to reduce teething problems.
• When words are tapped, they will now become highlighted; this gives better feedback while you wait for the dictionary popup to awaken from its slumber (or simply rubs a little salt in the wound if you missed the word you were aiming for).

BUG FIXES
• The landing page is now forced to be processed as English, regardless of your settings.
• The transcription visibility toggler button now always reflects the correct active/inactive state.
• Iframes are now fully supported, allowing tap actions (LinguaBrowse previously only supported transcriptions). Not yet tested on nested iframes, but hopefully you won't see too many of those.

KNOWN ISSUES
• Word lookup may fail for certain languages if the word is not in dictionary form. This won't be fixed for a while, as to surmount this, I'll need to set up a back-end service with extra language tools (which will take a lot of time and also a bit of money for the hosting). In the meantime, make sure that you've installed a system dictionary for your 'language to study', as they can often cope with words that are not in dictionary form.

1.2.0

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays to all LinguaBrowse users (and lumps of coal to everyone else). A couple of usability updates incoming:

NEW FEATURES
• Long-needed first-time usage setup tutorial added to reduce teething problems.
• When words are tapped, they will now become highlighted; this gives better feedback while you wait for the dictionary popup to awaken from its slumber (or simply rubs a little salt in the wound if you missed the word you were aiming for).

BUG FIXES

• The visibility toggler button now always reflects the correct active/inactive state.
• Iframes are now fully supported, allowing tap actions (LinguaBrowse previously only supported transcriptions). Not yet tested on nested iframes, but hopefully you won't see too many of those.

KNOWN ISSUES

In the meantime, make sure that you've installed a system dictionary for your 'language to study', as they can often cope with words that are not in dictionary form.

I don't have the strength left to add a Santa hat to the LinguaBrowse logo for this update, so please use your imagination.
1.1.0
2017-11-28
Thank you to users from all over the world for downloading and using LinguaBrowse! This is a considerable update, focusing on usability and visible bug fixes:

NEW FEATURES
• Now using a different online dictionary service, with more entries, more languages, and a much better layout! It might even be faster, too.
• The online dictionary popup now displays its progress (this feature was actually implemented from version 1.0, but I couldn't settle on the colour scheme!).
• LinguaBrowse can now show whether it's up-to-date via the landing page.

BUG FIXES
• Incessant "NSURLErrorDomain error -999" errors whilst browsing to new web-pages now disregarded (it turns out they are benign; they simply happen whenever you interrupt a page load request).
• Search provider switched to Bing, as it seems to parse faster than Google (and because it isn't blocked for users in China).
• iPhone X: The ad banner is positioned correctly, and the dictionary popup respects the safe area (thanks to the Xcode 9.1 iOS Simulator update).
• You can now look up words inside HTML anchor elements that link within-page without having to disable links.

Plans for future updates will be posted on the landing page and/or the various social media pages (once I have a spare moment).
1.0.2
2017-11-06
Thanks to my tester in faraway China for catching these issues for me to fix:

• You can now input URLs without having to prepend "http://" or "www."

• No longer bulldozes through "style" elements specified in the webpage's body, spewing Zalgo all over the webpage.

There was going to be a version 1.0.1, but I messed up the build numbering, so here we are straight at version 1.0.2. Expect more unexplainable version numberings to come in future, too.

jesuies,
Perpect app to learn Japanese Yomigata
Thank you James for your uber-fast feedback. After the latest update (6.01?) the app works perfectly fine. I want to delete my previous comment but don’t know how to do so.

I would like to recommend this app for Japanese intermediate learners who want to improve yomigata reading. I am personally fluent in understanding the meaning of Chinese characters (kanji) and Japanese verbs but mostly not aware of their pronounciation (yomigata). There are a couple of desktop plugins that offers yomigata with dictionary function. But in the app store (iOS,) this one is the only one that offers such features.
boxofkittens13,
Update
Thanks for responding and allowing those who purchased the app before the subscription model was implemented to continue using the app. Your update fixed this problem, so I’ve changed my rating accordingly.
phebebaba,
So helpful!
This is a great app. I've been looking for something like this for my phone to keep up on my Chinese reading comp. It's so convenient to have the pinyin on for words I have forgotten!
