I have tried my best with this and the HR+ earbuds, as I have a lot of respect for Maffetone and his methods. The whole setup is just annoying. The earbuds are inaccurate, and this app is inconsistent at best. For example, with a setting to give me an update every 2 minutes (pace, distance, HR etc), it will just give an update apparently when it feels like it. An update at 4 minutes, then at 10 minutes, then maybe 12 minutes, then 22 minutes. I will be finding a new solution. I gave this a solid month of use, and I’m done. Save yourself a headache and find something else. As far as the HR+, I’ve asked for a refund. I’d do better with the $99 back in my pocket and just going by feel on my runs. It’s a shame, because I think the whole thing could be really good. It feels like they’ve rushed it and used a subpar product to pair with.

Update: I am adding a star, simply because of the customer service from these guys. They worked with me in trying to find a better fit on the earbuds (apparently this was throwing off the reading), unfortunately I have not been able to get it to work well for me. They are going to refund me. Again, not satisfied with the app or earbuds, but customer service is top notch.
Bebe Right,
Headset /MAF training process not really supported
Update - I continue to have problems with the heart rate monitor actually monitoring my heart rate. Today it was saying I had a heart rate of 58 when I was puffing up a hill. I am not THAT fit...and no heart rate alarm?

Update - I’m getting it to work now but only after holding the on switch a very long time to get it to connect. The lights go through red then blue/white and then blue/red and it has to get to the last set of colors before it will connect. Now the heart rate monitor occasionally freezes and I have to take the ear plugs out and put them back in to get it to start up again. Also, I had read about the MAF method as not letting your heart rate too high but there doesn’t seem to be a heart rate alarm...?

It’s a great idea and it seems to monitor my heart rate but all of the audio goes out the iPhone speaker and not the earphones. I guess I wasted my money...
talkqwerty778,
Pretty good
I’ve been using the MAF HR+ headphones/app for three weeks now, and have not run into the issues that come up in the other reviews. The app is solidly OK - not super pretty, but definitely functional. I’ve had a few issues with heart rate not be captured correctly (first time - showing a ridiculously high heart rate from the start; both other times - stuck at 72). Both were solved by wiping out my ears and/or wiping off the earbud. The updating process is the only thing that bugs me - the app doesn’t warn you that a firmware update is happening, so you might turn off your headphones during a run and later find out you interrupted an update. And you would only know that if you are specifically looking at the tech info.

So the app is fine. The value of having my heart rate called out in my ears vastly outweighs the slight clunkiness of the app (and, who cares if it’s pretty? I just want it to work, which it does).
ZaraG,
App not ready for the public!
I purchased the MAF headphones after listening to multiple interviews by Phil Maffetone, admiring his research and approach to nutrition & fitness. I figured, “if this guy is the pioneer, his product must be the best”. I was wrong. Mainly because the technology of the app is not adequate. The app is essential to the functionality of the earphones and simply would not work. I emailed customer support (whom was helpful), and over a three week period they asked me to troubleshoot various issues that the app was having. It was immensely frustrating and not what I would expect from elite athletic technology. I ended up returning the headphones. The idea is probably good, but not yet ready for mass marketing. Phil Maffetone seems like an amazing guy, but unfortunately his HR headphones aren’t. (at least not yet...)
Check out the app first and save your money until these reviews change!
Ocean City Dave,
Review for app and headphones.
I am very pleased with everything about the app. The appearance, functionality, and ease of of set-up.

The headphones were pretty easy to fit and seem to be of decent quality. To be honest, I’m not sure why these aren’t more popular. I was skeptical when I didn’t see a bunch of positive reviews. From what I’ve gathered listening to a bunch of testimonials about MAF, it seems to be the way to go, and it seems like it would be imperative to get these as soon as you start.
jhenry1123,
Works great out of the box with my iPhone 11
Works as advertised. Heart rate spot on with my Garmin watch. Music plays and sounds good. Voice updates working perfect.
Native Carl,
Waste of money
It doesn’t pair with the Garmin Forerunner 735XT at all! It did pair with my iPhone 12, but It didn’t play my music from my playlist! Highly disappointed in this product as I’m a firm believer in the MAF method. Phil you need to disassociate yourself from bioconnect as they are giving your name a bad reputation with inferior products!
Jh_murphy,
Waste of time and money
After linking with my phone, No sound comes out of the earbuds. HR measures wildly inconsistent over the same workout done on consecutive days - is my heartbeat 203? 85? The app told me both within seconds of each other.

Great idea but a useless product.
Suzanne49855,
Set up problems
I agree, the initial set up to use the app is horrible. I’m hoping customer service can help. It should not be so difficult!
Displeased78,
Complete trash!
The MAF method is wonderful. But the earphones and the app are garbage. When I contacted the company, they refuse refund of help.
Stick with a company that knows how to do heart rate monitoring.
