Mahjong 4 Friends allows you to play mahjong with your friends and/or bots! American, Chinese, Hong Kong, and British Mahjong are supported. Can't play your way? Send us an email!
If you can't install Mahjong 4 Friends app, you can also play at https://mahjong4friends.com. The iOS app brings increased performance and additional features, so using it is recommended.
Mahjong 4 Friends provides instructions in little yellow bubbles while in the game. If you want to learn more about rules and strategies, a comprehensive tutorial is linked to from the app. Summaries of rules are provided below:
American Mahjong Rules (from NMJL card):
- One right, across, left charleston round (0-3 tiles left)
- If all 4 players agree, One left, across, right charleston round (0-3 tiles right)
- One charleston pass across (0-3 tiles)
- Mahjong when matching a combination on the card.
- Jokers can only be used in matches of 3 or more tiles.
- Any player can swap a matching tile for exposed jokers
Chinese/British/Hong Kong Rules:
- 4 pongs/kongs and a pair are mahjong
- Sequences can be used to replace a pong/kong
- An optional charleston is provided
- Mahjong and sequence limitations can be overridden (to help you play by your rules!)
You can play with your friends on any American Mahjong card by selecting "Other Card" - scoring is supported on the 2022, 2021, and 2020 National Mahjongg League cards, as well as the 2023, 2022, and 2021 Marvelous Mah Jongg cards.

This app is TERRIFIC!
“The Scrabble Addict” wrote a review on March 12 and I agree with it completely. I am new to Mah Jongg and was interested in playing after watching 3 out of 4 one hour classes online offered by AARP. I then attended 2 or 3 classes at a local center, but was constantly helping me choose which category and hand to pick. I then read a book from the library on how to play which recommended this app. I started playing on the app daily. This really helped me become more familiar with the card and the various hands. I love the offering of different choices when trying to decide which hand to play. The ladies at the Activity Center couldn’t believe how fast I learned how to play and bumped me up from the beginner’s class to the intermediate group after only 3 days! I highly recommend this app to anyone who wants to learn the game.

Love it SOOO much!
Just learned how to play mahjong in October and my friends can’t believe how good I am already. This game helps pick up your speed and the “history” option is fabulous! I’ve been replaying games with different strategies. Great learning tool! When I started learning to play, it was strongly recommended that I practice online AND learn the card. I did both and I learned how to play pretty well and I play quickly. I still have trouble figuring out how to play defensively, however but that will come with time. Best thing of all, it’s free!

I adore playing mahjong, and I rarely have friends around who are willing to play with me. This app totally fits the bill.
I love that I can switch it up to reflect the style of play I prefer (yay Chinese mahjong!) and that I can customize the tile tops. I’m also using it to learn how the scoring works, which was something completely nebulous to me before I started using the app.
Mad props to the developer, who was very responsive when I had a question. Definitely worth picking up and paying to remove the ads.

Yay! A Chinese version Mah Jong Ap!
I play Chinese mah-jong when I am in Hawaii with my friends. And American mah-jong when I am in California with my friends. And usually play American mah-jong online.
I just discovered this app which has a Chinese version. It’s really enjoyable and I like the voice option. Especially since you can change the voices so that you can recognize the voice that comes right before your turn so you know when you have the option to Chow.
I highly recommend this app. Very enjoyable!

The Real Thing!
Finally the real American Mahjongg game, instead of the match games saturating the App Store with the same name! I’ve played with four of my friends at their houses or mine for years. Now as we get older and some of us are experiencing mobility and health issues it’s great to be playing the game even if we can’t meet in person. And we can also practice individually w/ the computer on the days we don’t meet. Thank you so much!

An amazing app. We play all hours into the night as a family. It is an amazing tool for learning the game, practicing, and playing with less than four people.
to the dev, it would be even better if you supported special hands with their associated scores in chinese mahjong. this would make it even better for rapidly improving your skills. i'd pay for unlocking special hand support.

I don’t know what my life would be like if I did not have this game to play. I am 86 years old and cannot get around very much so I absolutely appreciate it whoever put this game together. Thank you thank you thank you and I can’t wait for the new card. You have made my life so happy and so fulfilled in my brain works great because of this game.

I do miss very much the ‘suggested hands’ button. It doesn’t work . it did work for the 2022 American Mahjoung card.

Great game
I love play mahjong but don’t get to do it in person as much as I like. I’ve looked at other apps and this one is by far the best. I’ve been using it for a month and enjoy playing the new 2022 card for free! It’s easy to use and gives me the opportunity to get better for when I do play in person.

Really great app!
A friend introduced me to playing MahJongg but it was so complex that I had a hard time learning all the hands and rules. This app is such a great way to learn, become acquainted with the 2023 card, and get familiar with the rules by playing with bots. So far the ads have been unobtrusive. I highly recommend!
