Memes shall be measured on the Meme Dankess Scale. The Meme Dankness Scale is a rating system for memes ranging from 1 to 4, where one is maximum dank, and 4 is not very dank at all. Memes must be rated on an integer value, there are no fractional ratings on the Meme Dankess Scale. When describing the rating of a meme, the preferred phrasing is "dank level x," where x is the rating on the scale. The criteria for rating a meme are as follows: Dank Level 4: Meme could be not funny, unoriginal, or clearly pandering to commercial interests. Memes that have been overused and never exceeded dank level 2 also fall into this category. Examples include: all advice animals except for original lolcats, shibe (more commonly, and disgustingly, known as "doge"), rage comics. Also of note, by an unfortunate but necessary ruling by the Meme Council on August 23, 2012, all memes featured in Weezer's video Pork and Beans are to be categorized as dank level 4 with the following exceptions: Dramatic Chipmunk, Diet Coke & Mentos, GI Joe PSA, All Your Base, Chocolate Rain, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Will It Blend. Dank Level 3: Memes is somewhat novel and/or amusing. May make some interesting political or social message. Some dank level 3 memes have esoteric origins, though this makes them a possible candidate for dank level 2. Having questionable commercial interests could knock a meme to dank level 3 from dank level 2. Examples include: Paul Blart, Bee Movie, Lolcats, M E M E C U B E, Charlie Bit My Finger, Loss. Dank Level 2: Meme possesses at least two of the following qualities: original, amusing or novel, has an esoteric origin. Meme likely has an important and relatable social or political message, though this is not necessary if it excels in other categories. If the meme is old, it has aged well, and/or was not overused when it hit peak meme. If it has you saying "nice meme," it is probably dank level 2. Note: the "nice meme" meme itself is dank level 2. Other examples include: Women are hard to animate, Actually, it's about ethics in games journalism, using "ye" instead of "yes," All Your Base, rare pepes, m'lady. Dank Level 1: Meme is the height of dankness. It possess all the following qualities: original, novel, fun or easy to use (if applicable). Being humorous is also an important qualifier, though not necessary. Having an esoteric background or high level of non sequitur should also be heavily considered when assessing for dank level 1. Meme ages quite well. These memes rarely degrade to a lower rating. Examples include: TFW no GF, Rickrolling, Tuesday, Will It Blend. The Meme Dankness Scale is intended to help us better understand and organize the ever-changing memescape. It is the hope of the Meme Council that readers will find the scale useful and fairly easy to use. We are all responsible for memeing responsibly, and ushering in a bright future for memes of all kinds.
