Description

***** Highly addictive piano game. *****

A fun way to develop a better musical ear!

Great for experienced musicians and beginners.

Music students love this app.

----

Melody Ear Training can help improve:

• Interval recognition
• Sense of pitch
• Transcription skills
• Improvising skills
• Self esteem

---

How to Play:

• Tap "play" to hear the melody
• To hear the melody again, tap "replay"
• Use the piano to play the melody yourself
• Play often to improve your score!

---

MIDI In – Plug in your MIDI keyboard to enhance the experience! (Core MIDI compatible)

MIDI Out – If you have a music instrument app (such as a synth) that can run in "background mode" and accepts virtual Core MIDI, you can play Melody Ear Training using the sounds of that app.

---

Tips for the Beginners:

Start with "2 Notes" for the melody length, set the difficulty to "Diatonic", and set the "Scale" to "C".

Use the + and - keyboard range control to set the keyboard to a small range such as "C, D" or "C, D, E".

Keep practicing, and as you progress you'll want to make the range larger.

---

Tips for the Pros:

Set "Feedback" to "Never" and turn on "Autoplay" to play continuously without ever missing a beat. Crank up the tempo to see how fast you can go!

---

Melody Settings:

Scale – 13 major scales

Difficulty – Diatonic, Random Tonic, Chromatic

Length – 2 to 6 notes

Tempo – 60 to 320 BPM

Keyboard Range – Starting at 2 notes in a major scale (ex. “C, D”) and up to 12 notes in a major scale (ex. “C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G”) with the ability to change octaves.

Feedback – Set to "Never" to stop all messages. Set to "Wrong" if you only want messages for incorrect melodies.

Sound – Set to "Piano" to hear the built-in piano sound. Set to "MIDI Out" to hear the sound of a music instrument app (such as a synth) that can run in "background mode" and accepts virtual Core MIDI.

Autoplay – Turn on to always play the next melody immediately. Turn off if you want to play the keyboard freely between melodies.

Key Labels – Turn off to remove note names on white keys.

Allow Unison – Turn off if you don't want the same note to be played twice in a row.

---

About the Difficulty Setting:

"Diatonic" uses notes from a major scale. This setting is recommended.

"Random Tonic" uses notes from a random major scale each time.

"Chromatic" mode is the "extreme mode" where any combination of notes is possible. As a result, strange intervals like the Augmented 2nd (ex. F to G#) are possible.

---

About the Score:

Melody Ear Training is all about self progression. Tap the score to reset at any time. The game goes on forever and the music never ends!

Simple yet effective
If you are looking to get better at identifying intervals and transcribing melodies by ear, this app is fantastic.

Transcribing a whole melody is much harder than identifying a single interval. This app let's you control the length of melody ( up to five notes ). It gives you the first note, and you play the rest on the keyboard. A great exercise to do over and over.

Despite the suggestions below, it's a good solid app.

A few suggestions for improvement:

- Allow users to pick and choose what intervals the melody is composed of. It's nice to get rid of those nasty minor sevenths so you can work on the intervals you care about. The difference in difficulty between diatonic and chromatic is too much. Perhaps allow the user to pick a scale.

- Separate the play and next button. I'm frustrated when I can't listen o the pattern once I've played all the keys.

- Give the user a chance to get each interval right on the melodies. It's frustrating when you blow the first of five melodies and can't get the remaining ones because of it

- Increase the range of notes. It is very tailored to the key of C right now. It's good to practice in a wide range.
Kalman G,
Great Ap!
With great elegance and configurability, the app is a nice tool for learning to hear notes better. I love how this app can serve me as a beginner and with the right settings can challenge or stump my wife, who has a much more developed ear.

I'll be recommending this app to kids and adults. One small tip: on the screen after submitting be your answer, show both my answer AND the corrected answer, so I can mess around more and try to hear the difference between my answer and the truth.

Simplest and Most Fun
I never write reviews but this app has been a lot of fun and is a pleasure to use. When they say "highly addictive piano game" they mean it, so watch out. I didn't believe them at first, and then my afternoon disappeared.

5 stars
Awesome app i love it!
howlermiller,
Wow! Great update!
This is a nice app. Very good for helping you learn intervals. Very slick and nice, and a great price too. The only reason I give it four stars is because I think it could still use a 'chord mode' where it plays two or more notes at the same time. Add that and I'll gladly give it five stars. As-is though it's well worth the buy for anyone who wants to begin learning interval recognition. You just can't complete your knowledge without a chord mode.
Thanks for the great app! Keep up the good work!
Jj mallet pro,
Much improved!
This latest version addresses all my concerns about the first version it. Love it. Great piano sound and good basic options for beginner to advanced. Karajan has larger range, but not more than 2 notes and not as good a sound or price. This is simple and very straight forward. Try free version as entry, but get this for true melodic work. Reccomended.
KD Jones,
Who's writing these reviews?
Well, this guy must have friends writing reviews.
No options for speed. No options for modes or minor scales. No ability to correct entries. Only 1 octave. No option for entering answer without sound. No option to replay exercise to analyze weak spots. Max length of "melody" is 5 notes. Always fun to see how many will be exactly the SAME note. Irritating "feedback" option. "Do Re Mi" has many of these options... how is this competitive? Yeah, it's 2 dollars less, but it's 3 dollars more pointless. And how could it come from a Berklee student? Please.
A waste of time for a free app. And it isn't free.

Foils a need
The latest version makes this a flexible tool. I use it with my students and myself. It's better than the expensive ear trainers.

B.A. Schachter's app is pretty solid. It is sure to get better and better with every update released. Keep up the good work.
malevj1ma,
Nice but needs improvement
I think this app will improve one ear to hear when a series of notes is played. Need improvement in the following: auto play next question, option to practice in different keys.
