Description

Featured as "New and Noteworthy" by Apple in March 2010, Metron is a popular and accurate metronome which has received great acclaim from amateurs and professionals alike.

The brainchild of a classically trained musician, Metron aids in the practice of runs, excerpts and complete compositions. Featuring an intuitive front panel, you can launch and start practicing instantly, just like with any basic metronome. An organized back panel provides single tap access to an ample variety of commonly used time signatures, and also allows you to define new or edit existing sequences, with full access to its powerful and unique features.

In addition to the usual single and multiple beat ticks of digital metronomes, Metron offers mixed time signatures with beat grouping and dynamic accellerando and ritardando through a high precision playback engine. A notation based sequencer offers detailed control over tempo and time signature changes, as well as allowing the creation of rhythmic patterns with individual beat sounds and volume control. You can even play two voices at once, so you can hear three against two or five against four, or more complicated polyrhythms. Metron also incorporates a pitch pipe that can be calibrated to the cent or Hertz.

Demo clips and an extensive overview are available on our website. To visit it, click the link that follows this description.

Features in detail:

Metronome:
• Portrait and landscape mode.
• Tempo from 1 to 999 Beats Per Minute nominally (effectively between 0.25 and 1998 bpm).
• Option to change tempo by traditional increments.
• Accelerando and ritardando ("Variance").
• Polyrhythms (two voices at once).
• Specify a factor between one quarter (0.25) and double (2.0) the current tempo. (Useful when practicing sequences which contain tempo settings, or to extend the nominal tempo limits.)
• Tap-pad to set the metronome tempo by tapping with a finger (e.g. by tapping to the currently playing song).
• Accuracy: Samples are laid down with absolute accuracy. Any drift is inherent to the device Metron runs on.
• Maintains accuracy when the screen is locked.
• Setlist control.
• Optionally allow Metron to keep playing when switching to the background.
• Record Metron sessions to audio files and share the recordings or the sequences themselves.
• Navigate long sequences through rehearsal numbers.

Sequencer:
• Create your own library with any number of sequences. A set with the most commonly used time signatures is included by default.
• Create sequences with any number of bars. (Each bar can have its own simple or complex time signature. Mix metres and tempi freely. Have accents on any beat you wish.)
• Each sequence can set a countdown, and also whether the metronome stops at the end of the sequence or continuously repeats the sequence. You can also choose to have the countdown repeated with every repeat of the sequence.
• Each bar consists of one or more time signatures and can set tempi and accelerando or ritardando on any beat. A bar can be set to play up to 200 times.
• A time signature can have between 1 and 64 beats over a dotted or undotted denominator.
• A time signature can be subdivided into beat groups, allowing you to set an accent on any beat you wish, since grouping beats affects metronome playback. Metron differentiates between the first beat, stressed beats and unstressed beats, so you always know where in the bar you are.
• Freely enter notes into bars to create rhythm patterns (like triplets or swing, or most any pattern you like). You can assign a custom color, sound and volume to any beat or any rhythmic component of a beat. You are in control. You can keep it as simple as you like, or make it as intricate as you need.
• Editing is done in a single staff score, with room for two voices, using traditional western music notation.

Pitch Pipe:
• Metronome includes a pitch pipe, that helps you tune your instrument. Easily choose any pitch within 9 octaves.

2.6
2012-04-17
New:
• Custom sounds: You can now load your own sounds into Metron.
• Improved user feedback section under the Info tab.

Changed:
• Changed the default setting for Background Playback to YES. If you don't want Metron to keep playing when the screen is locked, or when it moves to the background, set this to NO in the Settings.
• When playback is stopped, changing the tempo in a multi-bar sequence now makes the new tempo stick for that bar (unless the bar has a hard-coded tempo setting).

Fixed:
• Corrected several errors in the drawing of complicated beaming patterns.
• Minor other bug fixes.
2.5.3
2012-03-01
New:
• You can now access some score properties by tapping long on score items (notes, time sigs, tempo marks).

Fixed:
• Under iOS 5 some controllers in the preferences tab could crash.
• Fixed: Corrected playback for some advanced tempo settings.
• Fixed: The tempo base (note) would not show on the front panel before starting the metronome.
2.5.2
2011-07-20
Fixed:
• Corrects changes to the variance functionality in 2.5.1, which broke some aspects of the variance slider function on the front panel.
2.5.1
2011-07-13
Changed:
• A tempo variance that is applied per sequence is no longer overridden by more granular tempo variances set elsewhere in the score. Its value is added to the bpm upon each iteration through the score. This allows more flexibility when practicing complex sequences where you want to steadily increase the tempo of the whole sequence, without needing to manually increase the tempo factor on the front panel.
• The rhythm template related buttons in the score view are now only visible when one or more notes or rests are selected.

Fixed:
• Eliminated a crash that could occur when selecting a new sequence in the sequence list.
• A variance per bar or per beat will no longer increase the bpm upon repeat of the sequence. (After all, it is only valid from wherever it appears in the score.)
• The "Set Variance" switch in the tempo section for a sequence would not always reflect the correct state when entering sequence editing.
• Changing the tempo base of a tempo mark was not always possible.
• The LCD could show a sequence wide variance setting at the start of the sequence, even though one wasn't active.
• Eliminated some issues with the tempo variance type controls in the score editor.
2.5

• Requires iOS 4.0 or greater.

Fixed:
• Navigation buttons are now always correctly updated when playing and navigating setlists.
• During playback a new tempo mark will now reset a tempo variance, if one is active.
• Tempo variance setting is remembered between sessions.
• Tempo factor setting is remembered between sessions.
2.1
2010-05-12
New:
• Setlists: You can now create, edit and easily navigate setlists.
• Enhanced tuplets. Create any type of tuplet.
• Rhythm pattern templates to speed up entry of commonly used rhythm patterns (use the built-in templates or create your own).
• Pitch pipe base frequency can now be adjusted (in addition to the individual pitch adjustments).
• Pitch pipe remembers settings between sessions.

Changed:
• Background music mixing and the ability to prevent the screen from locking are now independent.
• Updated the integrated user guide to document the new features.

Fixed:
• Some tuplets had incorrect timing when played back.
• Changing volume or pitch in the pitch pipe could result in audible pops.

• Refined the look of the LCD frame.

Fixed:
• Corrected an issue between screen lock and mixed audio mode: Audio no longer fades when the screen is locked during playback, and audio is no longer garbled when the screen is unlocked again.
2.0.1
2010-03-12
Fixed:
• Version 2.0 was mistakenly shipped with wrong color settings for the LCD area. This update reverts the colors.
• A glitch that could sometimes occur when pasting sequences was corrected.
2.0
2010-03-10
New:
• Rhythm patterns. Subdivide beats to create almost any rhythmic pattern in the beat editor, using standard music notation.
• Copy/paste sequences.
• Copy/paste bars.
• Completely redesigned Metron icon.
• Completely redesigned front panel.
• Integrated user guide.

Changed:
• When pausing playback, if a tempo variance of type "per beat" is active, then the tempo is reset to the tempo at the start of the current bar, since playback will, by default, resume at the beginning of the current bar.

Fixed:
• Under certain conditions the tempo could be set incorrectly when stopping playback.
• Under certain conditions the tempo variance could be set incorrectly when stopping playback.
1.3
2009-12-10
• Multi-bar sequences can be navigated (forward, rewind and rewind to start).
• An ample collection of percussive pulse sounds has been added. (Snare, high-hats, bongo's, etc.)
• Silence as a beat sound option was also added.
• Beat sounds are played back when selected.
• It is now possible to specify a note duration upon which to base a bar's tempo. (Example: you can set a dotted quarter as the base for the tempo of a 6/8 bar.)
• Sequences, bars and time signatures can now be created without needing to enter edit mode.
• Sequences can now be backed up and shared with other Metron users, through a web-browser interface.
• Some cosmetic changes to the front panel, to account for the new functionality.
• Various bug fixes.
1.2
2009-10-07
New:
- Option to disable screen lock prevention during playback. (Playback remains steady when screen is locked on OS 3.1)
- Volume control now available from the front panels.
- The Pitch Pipe now defaults to adjustments per Hertz (per cent can still be chosen in the preference settings).
- Metron now has a preference setting to allow the screen to sleep during playback.

Changed:
- Renamed the "Tuner" to "Pitch Pipe".

Fixed:
- On some hardware the playback engine could run a bit under 1/4 second per minute slow. Timing is now always correct.
- In version 1.1 changing the traditional tempo increments preference setting would also affect screen locking during playback. It no longer does.
1.1
2009-09-11
New:
• Option (in application settings) to use traditional tempo increments with the metronome front slider.
• Accellerando and ritardando can now be set to adjust tempo until the next absolute tempo mark (through the "Mark" tempo variance type setting in the bar editor.)

Changed:
• When a sequence is created the tempo variance type now defaults to "per sequence", instead of "per bar".
• The tempo variance type of a sequence can now be changed even if a sequence is not set to alter tempo variance (since this still affects how a sequence may react to user tempo variance changes at the front of the metronome during playback).
• Toggling a bar to set a tempo on or off no longer resets the bar's tempo variance.
• The bar editor now shows the number of times a bar is to be played, rather than the number of times it is to be repeated (which is one less than the number of times played). This is more intuitive when programming sequences.
• A bar can now be played up to a 110 times (was 101).
• Minor layout tweaks in sequence and bar editor.

Fixed:
• Resolved a crash that could occur when reordering bars in the sequence editor.
• Resolved a crash that could occur when reordering time signatures in the bar editor.
• If repeat countdown was on and a tempo variance per sequence was set, the tempo would not be correctly adjusted at each repeat of the sequence.
• Bars and time signatures can no longer be dragged to inappropriate sections of the table view.
• Implemented workaround for system bug that could cause a crash if scrolling a table view while editing text.
• Removed the last row from the pulse sounds chooser. (Selecting it would cause a crash since the sound file does not exist.)

Palikat,
PLEASE IMPROVE/UPDATE GRAPHICS!
This $5 app needs to look the part. We all have shiny, beautiful devices and I for one actually care how the app looks.. I use this app a lot and it would help to have something nice to look at. The features are great but it's kind of a downer that this app looks very D.I.Y. and unprofessional.
ryanmatt117,
App was great before iOS 11 and 64-bit apps
This app was great and easy to use for creating sequences before iOS 11. The app temporarily didn’t work when iOS 11 began running 64-bit apps. The developer eventually updated the app, but it doesn’t work the same anymore. I wish there was a website or video with directions for creating sequences with multiple meters. The developer needs to release a page with detailed instructions with the latest updates for creating more complicated sequences. You’re better off looking for another app for creating rhythms and extended metronomes with meter changes for practicing.
dj-jazzynimms,
Great App for the Marching Arts!!
This app is great for programming tempo changes, accelerandos, ritardandos, and other tempi modifications. I made a sequence for every rehearsal section. Wonderful for consistent practice. Little buggy at times but, if your a music professional this is a MUST HAVE!
SnareFlare,
Great app. Here are some ideas for possible updates.
This is an amazing start. Being a percussionist and playing pieces with all sorts of mixed meters and 5-let /7-let things is grueling, but this has definite potential to help with a few updates. If there was an option to edit more than one beat at a time it would definitely help A LOT. For example. If I wanted to program it to play a quarter note five-let over 4 quarter notes or 8 eighth notes I couldn't with the way it is now, but if an update allowed me to do so it would MUCH appreciated! Also, perhaps an update that allows the metronome to play two voices as to outline whatever duration of notes you want as your downbeat plus the quarter note five-let or whatever you're trying to play above it as to hear how it fits in with your desired down beat.
Drumgroove,
Really poor documentation
There is none that I can find. App lets one put any number of note values in a bar, so what sense is it to have meter? I see no way to make a simple thing like a triplet. Do not purchase this app.
StringBasSix,
Great app
Great app to have on the phone. No need to carry a separate metronome.
thompson_0920,
Crash and Burn
The app keeps crashing every time I try to use it. There's nothing to review or say about it because I can't use it even though I paid for it.
richbajo,
My favorite metronome
I love that it goes down to 1bpm. Very flexible, love it
JeremyC76,
Waste of money
“Extensive tutorials” don’t seem to exist. App crashes every few times you interact with it. Do not recommend.
John Goyeau,
The best metrnome app you can get
As any professional classical musician knows, a metronome is an every day tool. Before this app I was unable to find a stable software metronome. The others always have a hiccup or some other disturbance to the beat that makes them practically unusable. Not this one; this is as stable as your Dr. Beat. In fact, I am away on a concert trip rigjt now and this is the first time i left my metronome at home This app goes way beyond basic functions, to boot. You can even program this for changing meters. Finally I can practice music that changes from all kinds of meters with different beat lengths with a metrome. This was designed by a pro musician and it shows. The beep sound is loud and clear. The beat range is huge. There is even a pitch pipe. One request I have is to be able to change tempos in traditional increments (120, 126, 132, etc.). While is nice to have the freedom to adjust in single increments, I do a lot of practice with the regular numbers. For a first release this has the care and polish that all develpers should be pitting into their work. Bravo.
