Description

INCLUDED IN BEST OF 2014

“Few iOS apps are as thoughtfully designed as Molecules, and even fewer combine superb visuals with clear writing that encourages exploration.”
– Macworld

“Molecules uses its predecessor as a springboard to further greatness.”
– Stuff

A book about molecules, and a chance to touch, stretch and twist them!

Molecules by Theodore Gray is the extraordinary sequel to The Elements, the bestselling book and app. It continues the story of the elements to show how they are assembled into the rich diversity of compounds, chemicals, molecules, rocks, and stuff that make up our world.

The app includes an important world first: a touch-interactive molecular dynamics simulation that lets you poke and prod hundreds of different molecules, seeing how each one reacts to your touch. Molecules are not static things – they twist, turn, vibrate, and spin in an elaborate and beautiful dance of quantum mechanics.

The app incorporates the NAMD simulation engine developed by the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group at the University of Illinois. These are serious, scientifically accurate simulations. A few minutes playing with them will give you a deeper intuition about the true nature of molecules than years of study on paper. And while they are serious science, they are also a whole lot of fun to play with!

In addition to the amazing wiggling molecules, the app contains the entire book of Molecules, with all the objects interactively rotatable so you can see them from all sides. Going further than The Elements, the app includes dozens of innovative and intriguing “still life videos” that reveal the true nature of substances through close-up interactive video.

Features include:

• Try out the first ever touchscreen-interactive molecular dynamics
• Bend, squeeze and shape 348 different molecules using multiple fingers
• Increase or decrease the temperature and see how molecules react
• Read the full text of all 14 chapters of Molecules by Theodore Gray
• Understand the movements of molecules in a special chapter for the app
• See over 500 videos and rotations of incredible objects photographed by Nick Mann

Howisube,
Great app for intuitive understanding
Seeing realistic molecular motion while reading about the real world implications was much more satisfying that my high school chemistry classes.

This entertaining app is divided into chapters about common chemical classes (lipids, acids, organic) and properties (color, smell) that combine quirky dad humor with interactive molecular models, 3D images, and videos. It’s the most effective educational app I’ve used with and I hope it’s the future of textbooks.

The intuitions built here would be a excellent catalyst in learning how atoms behave and interact in a classroom setting.

Jiggly molecules
10/10 molecule physics! This app is awesome

Touch input bugs
The latest update has caused the touch input to be off when interacting with the molecules on iPhone XS Max

Update: I saw the developer response and I have emailed them with the requested information and details and am awaiting a response or update. I have changed to 3 stars for good customer support and will update back to 5 stars when the bug is resolved.
Арви,
Fantastic book, stuck in English-speaking community.
That's the closest to "periodic table" of molecules. Actually this is a textbook, that covers the distance between chemistry and substances we see, use and depend on everyday. You can get more insights to the lower structure of world we are living in, both natural and urban.

Please, use my money to translate Molecules into other languages. I was tempted to give 4 stars because it has no Russian translation, but your Elements app has good Russian. So I have some faith you are working on it.

Apps like this one cover the last mile of scientific treasures delivery, contributes to the human culture and advance the whole world towards the better place to live in. Everyone should buy Elements and Molecules, but developers must make the first step over language barrier.

Fantastic book, needs a fix to remember current position
This is an absolutely amazing book, well written, beautifully illustrated, and very engaging. It is a perfect example of what a book can be on an iOS device.

There is one very irritating issue, that needs to be fixed: the app completely resets itself whenever I leave it or switch to another app. When I return I have to open the chapter again and scroll to my last position. That is very common because I flip over to Wikipedia a lot to explore some topics in more detail.
TravisAK,
NO BOOKMARKING?? (iPhone 6)
The bookmarking problem seems to be an iPhone 6 issue. Works fine on the iPad, which is the intended platform.
Amazing book, great app.
The book is SOLID 5 stars, but the app lacks bookmarking. That makes for a looooooot of scroooooooling every time I return to it. When that gets fixed I'll update my review. If I'm missing it feel free to call me out in public. I've looked everywhere. Integration with the Elements app could be smoother as well (same orientation, etc) but again, that is a 5 star book.
Mr. Sheppy,
Astounding.
I went into this app with high expectations after the remarkable quality of "The Elements" and "The Planets." I was not disappointed.

If anything, my expectations were far too low. The notion of an entire digital coffee table-style book about molecules seems a little odd, to say the least, but it turns out that it's incredibly fun to manipulate molecules in scientifically-accurate 3D models.

To look at the models of medications I take to understand better how they differ from precursor medicines, or to read about why two similar molecules have wildly different characteristics, is fascinating. And this book presents a lot of basic and important scientific knowledge in an engaging and surprisingly conversational tone.

This is exactly the sort of thing that makes technology in general and the iPad in particular a must for schools and education.

Magnificent.
MPJ2,
Best chemistry book ever!
I'm an 8th grade science teacher and this is the best chemistry book I've ever experienced. It makes learning about chemistry, simple, fun and interactive! I love the relevant examples, humor, spinning objects, videos and especially the interactive 3D molecules! I just finished experiencing the whole book (notice I didn't just say reading, cause it's so much more than that) and can't wait to share it with family and friends and get it into he hands of my students! Thank you!
Madsciii,
Fantastic
Absolutely fantastic app. The book is well written, and the interactive simulations are fantastic. I love how they are integrated with the book.

I use NAMD (which is actually running the simulations) for my research. Being able to interact with these molecules on through the touch screen is incredible. The app has style. It's fast, intuitive, and altogether awesome.

A hell of a lot of work went into this app and it shows. Highly recommended for all.
kendradog,
Great book
Really nice book, very well done. I just started it but already a lot of neat things, wish I’d had this in chemistry class. The chapter on names by the way reminds me of an excellent book by Patrick Rothfuss, “Name of the Wind”. I’d like to see a few exercises or a way to test predictions - might need a bit more math for that I guess. As usual from TouchPress titles, high production quality and deep content.
