drnstvns,
An unfinished masterpiece
I’ve been a little VR/AR crazy for awhile now experiencing anything I can get my hands on and this in terms of beauty, feeling totally immersed, take-your-breath-away moments and just overall design is about the best I’ve seen or experienced. All of this AND it’s the first game that you don’t need a controller to move. When you walk around in real life you walk around in the game. I even bent down to look under a giant mushroom and the VR world moved exactly as if I was there bending down. It’s unbelievable!
So, why the “unfinished” masterpiece and only 4 stars? So it’s 7 Stars compared to everything else out there but I’m holding this up to the standards they set by making it. If you’re going to make something like this MAKE IT! There is zero audio. No sound effects, no music nothing so you’ve got visual sensory overload while your ears hear the tv and cars honking outside. And second it lasts a total of 2 minutes before it ends and says “demo over- start again” I looked to see if I could purchase a fully functioning version but this is the only version available. Lastly you have to go to their website and look at this diagram thing of how to set the room you’ll be in up. You have to stand a certain distance from a box you have to make a certain sized outline of on your floor with tape then scan the room with the phone partially in your goggles and line up a projected blue box with the one you’ve drawn on the floor. Why? Once I played I couldn’t see any reason for all that. I even walked to where my box outline was in the room and nothing so I don’t know what that seemingly waste of time was all about. I mean if it made the VR world conform to your real world so there were obstacles in your way so you couldn’t bump into things like walls and chairs while walking around I’d understand but that wasn’t the case. As for no audio I can only assume that’s a safety thing so you can hear what’s happening in the real world because you can’t see but just ask a friend to watch you and you’ll watch then when they do it.
As for the super short playing time I have no idea.
Hopefully theyll put out a full version and figure out how to give us arms so we can touch stuff but until then it’s an experience not to be missed (Think Avatar meets Alice in Wonderland on a rock in space with black lights) if only to see the future of VR and create enough demand for a fully operating version. With sound. Please. Thank you.
Von Hesse,
Amazing example of room-scale VR!
WOW! This works so well on a mobile GPU, who needs all the clutter from dedicated equipment? I see hand gesture recognition as the next big step.
