Description

Chosen by BestEducationalApps as one of the Top 5 Music Theory Apps for iPad - "For music teachers wondering how to get their students to practice chord progressions and new theory topics at home, Music Tool could be the solution. This app is a simple dashboard of notes and chords that make those elements sound out when you tap them. For example, you can tap the C on the keyboard or in the list of notes, and hear the C. You can also tap the C sus4 chord and hear that chord. In addition to the Major scales dashboard, there is a list of modes that allows you to change the dashboard into a list of notes and chords used in the different modes."

Rnaoncfixd,
Use of space
I'm reviewing this from an iPad perspective. It is still really helpful to figure out chords and seeing how they are implemented on the piano. Don't get me wrong, no other free app on the ipad is that good, yet.

The only thing I'm bothered by, is that the space on the iPad isn't fully utilized. I could easily see a lot more scales and the information could be better organized. Also, I might as well have found an app on the iPhone catalogue, as this app looks like it was scaled up... Poorly.

I'm glad it was a free download though.
plojer,
Problems......
I like the idea, but there are a couple of issues. Of the selections for key changes, two don't work. You can't access D, and G. I also can't access the 'Circle of Fifths'. The only other issue; there is no way to contact the developers from within the app. Why would I spend $4 for the full app when there are such essential parts of the LE version that don't work, and there are no way to address the issues? If they fix those issues, I will adjust my rating accordingly, and purchase the full version.

Update: I found out how to contact the Developer, and he was Great!!! He got back to me immediately, and suggested a couple of possible remedies. I will definitely purchase the full version.
ElsVirginia,
Good stuff, but....
I'm excited about this app, but a couple of things I've noticed are a bit weird, and should be fixed if there's ever an update.
Instead of having the upper or lowercase of the Roman Numeral correspond to the type of chord (uppercase for Major, lowercase for minor) this app has the roman numeral corresponding to the numbered half steps within the scale. I don't know if this is different in different countries, but in America that is incorrect.
Which is confusing, to say the least. The only other problem I see is the absence of a relative minor option. The only thing it shows is a parallel minor. But that's not really a problem, it's just not handy.

But really, great app. Just don't trust the Roman Numerals. :)
JaxRop,
App for music makers!
If you are making music or want to understand how it's magic works. Well you found one great tool. This app let you pick a scale and other parameters and show you only the notes that will work in this scale, so you can't play wrong. How cool is that! You don't need to know about music theory and you can play like you do!

I won't say much about the price, except that a good strategy to let the tool evolve with the feedback of the early users.

Here is some feedback for the dev team:

- it would be great to have the choice of better sounding instruments

- it would be sweet to have a view where the notes and chords are bigger and design for creation

- and same request than an other review: A way to send midi via USB or wifi to Live or other midi devices

Thanks for the great app in hope you can make it better and better.

Cheers!
AlexxxG22,
Please fix right side!!!
I started with the free version and quickly updated to the paid when I found there were only a few key signatures you could select. Also, I noticed I could change the scales or modes. However, upon update, the rest of the keys were made accessible BUT IM STILL HAVING AGGRAVATING ISSUES! It seems like the right side of the GUI just doesn't respond to touch. It's not my phone (iPhone 5) or my screen; I turned the phone 180 degrees and there was still a problem. I still can't access modes, the top row of notes, AND the piano keys on the right side of the screen. And by access, I mean I can see them, they just don't respond to touch. PLEASE UPDATE!!! PLEASE! I'll give a better review if you can fix this.
Jmutha,
Interface change for uncommon scales
Admittedly, I haven't used the app much. I don't need help on my major/minor scales, but need to exercise my brain w/ other scales. So my complaint would be that one (in my opinion) shouldn't think of (or be forced to think of) a scale in terms of its relative major. It would be nice to be able to, for example, find the B locrian scale on the "B key" view, instead if needing to think of the relative major, go there, then select locrian.... A UX change is probably needed, but overall, the app does its job.
vincenzo_milione,
Great for those with basic skills.
If you have gone through basic music theory, or at least know which notes are which in each cleft, and have heard the word key signatures, then this app will save your life if you are learning the piano. Although the keys are a little junky, the fact that it has the circle of fifths built right in, and shows you have to play major and minor keys in different key signatures, makes it a great app for an even greater price.
Aircavmedic,
Music tool
I think this is a very good app. You can throw away all those cards that have circle of fifth & other info, because it is here. I am pretty sure I will upgrade to full tool, so you have complete access. I do wish you could change instruments. I play vibraphone which is same theory as piano, yet it is a mallet/ percussion instrument. 5 stars if you could do that. There is a ton of info here, with updates excellent. Thank you
designlady711,
I thought this only exited in my imagination
Ok. I was browsing through the app store looking for a piano that would help me with scales. When I saw this one, it's like,"Ok, this is probably not gonna work." I tried it anyway. I pressed the show scale button and my mouth just hung open. And then I was like,"OMG, this is exactly what I was looking for!!! For FREE?!?!" If you need help with scales OR chords, GET IT.
Xerelda,
Love it!
It's a pretty good acoustic piano sound. The notes are in tune, but a half step off. Playing a C on this piano is really a C#. It's a good app if you don't mind it being off a half step. Nice circle of 5ths, scales and chord helps. For me, a skinny stylus works best to play it. It's nice if I hear a song and wonder what key it's in I can whip this out and figure it out.
