Description

NanoStudio 2 is a powerful music production environment for synthesis, sampling, arranging, editing and mixing. It’s the successor to the original NanoStudio, an app held in high regard by musicians for many years for its usability, quality and productivity.

NanoStudio 2 builds upon the same design principles as its predecessor and introduces a huge range of extra features. An all-new audio engine delivers truly professional sound quality, highly optimized to handle complex projects with large numbers of instruments and effects.

NanoStudio 2 hosts external Audio Unit (AUv3) instruments and audio/MIDI effects. A library of all your AU instruments and presets is maintained so they’re tagged, searchable and just as accessible as NanoStudio’s own internal instruments.

Obsidian is NanoStudio’s built-in synth. It has 3 oscillators with 32 note polyphony and 7 different synthesis methods including analogue, wavetable, FM, multi-saw and phase distortion. It also supports samples and multisamples which may be split by note or velocity. Obsidian has 18 different filter types, including resonant analogue, super clean digital, formant, comb and waveshaping. Nearly every parameter can be modulated via the synth’s 5 envelopes, 5 LFOs and 10 configurable macro controllers, and modulation connections can be assigned with just a few taps. 300 factory patches are supplied with macros set up and ready to go. It’s easy to create your own patches and there are many more professionally produced patches available as IAP.

Slate is NanoStudio’s second built-in instrument, a sample/synthesis-based performance pad which makes it easy to tap out drum beats. Slate comes with 500 quality factory samples ranging from multisampled acoustic drums with natural variations through to cutting-edge electronic percussion and effects. 50 factory kits are include, and it’s easy to construct your own drum kits using the factory samples or your own. Slate can also be used with samples of just about anything: vocals, guitar riffs, synth pads – you name it.

There are powerful editors for song arrangement, MIDI, automation and samples. All share a consistent user interface so you’ll be up to speed with them and making music in no time.

A fully-featured sequencer supports tempo and time signature tracks (including tempo ramps) and Ableton Link.

Everything’s brought together by a mixer with unlimited tracks, track grouping and audio/MIDI sends. Tracks may have an unlimited number of insert effects with 11 built-in effects to choose from including reverb, sidechain compressor/expander, EQ with spectrum analysis, look-ahead limiter, delay, exciter, chorus, flanger and phaser. You can add AU audio/MIDI effects to the chain and use them just like an internal effect.

There are many mixdown options available with quality settings up to 32 bit/96kHz and support for file formats including wav, aiff, ogg and M4A. You can mixdown track stems in a single operation or select just a region of the song - great for resampling.

NanoStudio supports Audiobus and has many options for file sharing via the iOS Files app, Dropbox, AudioShare, iTunes File Sharing, AirDrop, email, WebDAV and importing music from your iTunes library.

Develop your initial musical ideas through to a final master with an intuitive workflow designed to get things done.

iPodTodd123,
Nice!
This is definitely my new favorite mobile DAW. I can’t imagine how much effort it must have taken one developer to create this masterpiece. From the workflow to the color scheme to the included sounds, to the massive obsidian synth and slate drum machine. There are so many good things about obsidian alone, it allows you to combine several different synthesis types, has a lot of modulation options and sounds great. It is all really well polished and I haven’t had any crashes or even hiccups yet with my device. I do hope many people use this DAW and the dev continues work on it to make it the best on iOS.

That being said, nanostudio 2 is lacking some features that are pretty necessary, the main ones being audiobus support, IAA, auv3 parameter automation and audio tracks. Which are apparently in the works except IAA, and not sure about automation. Sadly it looks like I won’t be able to use my inter app audio apps and the user interface for some audio units are just plain bad, trying to fit an entire app onto a small plugin screen sometimes just can’t be done well in more fully featured apps.

Overall, it’s a great app and really fun to use.
Pumpte,
MY FAVORITE DAW? VERY SOON!!!!
At the time of this writing this isn’t a complete daw to me until the audio tracks are added but it is an amazing workstation as of now!!!! The best if I do say so myself!!!! I love everything about Nanostudio 2 there is no flaw and once audio tracks are available it will be my one and only go to DAW hands down.... The built in effects sound great and audio units work as if they are built in.....Slate and Obsidian are beasts in their own right!!!! There is not another app as intuitive, yet simple, or as fun for music production with professional quality PERIOD!!!!Believe me I have them all!!!!

UPDATE: Dropped 3 stars because we was promised audio tracks back in 2019. If you want audio tracks in your work flow don’t buy this app. It’s a great Groovebox don’t get me wrong it’s not a DAW though. It’s the only app to have the power and flexibility of Logic Pro but fails to capitalize on audio tracks. It hurts to give this app such a low rating. This would be the best daw on iOS but, as of right now it’s not. I take back nothing I said before just disappointed that there are no audio tracks. I bought the app full price and paid for every sound they have in the store full price. Just can’t believe the lack of understanding of what the people want and the fail of adding a feature that was more important than creating the phone app.
Guycoolio,
The King Lives Again!
Long live the King! NanoStudio was my first DAW on iOS. It was great and set the bar for creating professional sounding tracks on iOS. I reluctantly had to move on over the past 5 years to other great music programs like Cubasis, Gadget, BM3, AUM, etc. However, I was pleased to learn about NanoStudio 2 which has raised the bar once again in my opinion for the creation of high quality professional tracks on iOS.

Workflow remains fantastic for getting quick ideas out and for generating entire songs. The sound of “Slate” and “Obsidian” are exceptional. Obsidian in particular competes strongly against high end desktop software synths and/or serious hardware synths with regard to sound, routing, and overall flexibility. The mixer and effects are equally terrific. In fact, the entire app feels stable, CPU friendly, and provides an overall enjoyable user experience.

As always, there are some additional wish lists of features (e.g., audio tracks is coming) but the current program is simply a cut above the rest of the pack. Kudos and thanks again to the developer for dusting off the cobwebs of this awesome classic.
Solomon of Kleptolia,
Unbelievable. Now for iPhone! Endless screaming!!!
Played with this this thing for 15 minutes and I can tell you: it’s a monster. The original was probably my favorite music app, so I’m a bit biased, but even as a guy who has bought Korg Gadget and all of its add-ons (except for Lisbon), I can see that this app already has nearly all of Gadget’s functionality, and audio tracks are on the way. Even now, the app can handle samples of up to 2 HOURS LONG. I’m not super-concerned about audio tracks, that being the case.

As for the interface, it’s more complex than the original, but that’s due to the INSANE number of features it possesses. Considering the number of controls you have on each page, this thing is practically a magnum opus of streamlining design. BM3 won’t be able to keep up.

The dev is one man, working alone, and he’s made a DAW killer on iOS. Give him your money!
cloud700,
Almost There
Well if this was a few years ago I’d give it a solid five stars, but here at the end of 2019 it really needs track freeze and audio, and time stretch like the other two major IOS DAW’s to be a truly viable DAW. I’ve heard rumors audio is in the works .. so if that becomes a reality I’ll revisit here and up my rating. As it is it’s really a nice experience using external AUV3 synths and effects that don’t take much power and need freezing to continue the project, and the Obsidian synth has some useable patches for sure depending on your style of music. The tempo and time signature is unrivaled and is what attracted this to me in the first place as I do switched on style classical music with lots of time signature and tempo changes. Finally the UI is just much nicer to look at for me than the other two popular DAWs I have done most of my serious IOS music work with the past several years. I’m hoping to make NS2 my major DAW here once the audio is implemented .. and get away from using my desktop computer altogether.
Atm0spher1c,
Great workflow
NanoStudio has one of the best workflows on iOS in my opinion. If you want to sketch out a song on a timeline, not just make a bunch of disconnected loops NanoStudio can help get you there.

To those complaining about the lack of audio tracks, why would you buy the app in the first place knowing it doesn’t have that feature, then after having done that, write a review complaining? It’s like buying a motorcycle then writing a review complaining it only has 2 wheels. Buy a car in the first place.

The drum sampler Slate has quite deep audio functionality so you can most certainly record, process, and sequence audio in NanoStudio (think of Slate as an MPC style sampler). This is not a true audio track, but if you’re using NanoStudio as a scratchpad Slate can get you pretty close.
Mmdeveloper,
Man - this was 100% worth the wait!!
I used to love this application, and tried to find a replacement when it no longer worked. I contacted the developer and he mentioned he was working on it and it would be available “soon” well here it! This is the best money you are going to spend on an iPad production tool! I haven’t checked yet - but I am hoping that the desktop version is still available on his site!

I have used SO MANY MUSIC TOOLS!!! (I mean seriously - I think I have a problem lol) and this one just blows me away!

Keep up the excellent work! And if you are on the fence about this product - get off of it, buy it and start making music already! I do intend to do a full review once I get more familiar with the way this version works, but thus far - AWESOME!!!!!
Kizznutt14,
Man to think NanoStudio was powerful it’s jam packed with volume 2
NanoStudio 2 is by far the most jam packed with beat maken options it’s scary . Steven Senger,
Incredible app!
I first got nanostudio one several years ago to keep me occupied on flights when I couldn't play online games on my phone. I got so into it that I started releasing cassette tapes to my friends made purely from nanostudio one, as an exercise in restriction. That grew to several cassette tapes, a cd, and a vinyl record, released by various labels and sold around the world. I've also used nanostudio (both one and two) to perform live for the past decade or so. It's super handy to have such a versatile musical program when performing overseas, because I don't have to try to explain what a eurorack case is to airport security. Super powerful app!
Nik.x,
When you fix what isnt broken...:(
Nanostudio (0G) was an amazing DAW / soft synth app that was easy to learn and use due to it being a lot of fun to use AND sticking with the familiar DAW structure made it very intuitive to use if youd ever used any multi track software before. At the time, I was using FLStudio on my PC, and first played with Pro Tools when it really was the industry standard for professionals way back in 2002 as opposed to the nightmare dumbed down garagebamd crap Apple turned it into over the next decade. I digress, amd only meam to say i that even though i was working on music otner music with similar daws and given that, I found Nanostudio to be very intuitive amd i quickly used it to program some backtracks amd create samples from recorded audio.

There was a companion app for both Mac and Windows, so files and projects could be shared whiv

MIDI suppot was perfect as it could get, (and in fairness that hasnt changed).
