calincostian,
Almost perfect, with one critical flaw
Love all the functionality of this app, it's excellent except for one (important, though I'm hoping easy to fix) flaw: the "clap" (both beep and flash) is too long and takes multiple frames of video, especially if you shoot at a higher frame rate. This makes synchronization of audio and video impossible, which is precisely what a clapboard is supposed to do! (true, this app is called "slate", not clapboard, although it has both features, and it's a pity that one of them is unusable).

With the clap/synchronization feature unusable, I can only use this app as a slate that displays information (very useful in itself), but then I need to use a second app for the clap which is awkward and a bit ridiculous.

Take a look at Auto Clap, another free app, which allows the duration of the clap to be set to as little as 10 milliseconds - if you can set both the light flash and the beep sound to 10ms (allowing variable duration like Auto Clap does would be even better), you will have a true, fully functional slate/clapboard and the eternal gratitude of many filmmakers (and my 5 stars).

With anticipated thanks

Bug
Issue with the scene number unable to be viewed when I switch to landscape.
DC Qranky,
Perfectly simple!
Big easy to read fonts maximizing the screen real estate - love it! I think my only requests would be the option to close certain windows in order to fill the screen more with just the pertinent info (like if I'm not running audio) and maybe an invert option for black text on a white background. Otherwise perfect for a simple slate.
Robér,
Cool but fails primary function.
The slating signals, both audio and visual, are far to long for this to be a syncing tool.

The snap of a clapper board is a very quick sound that fits inside of a single video frame or film frame. The clap of the arms (with magnet) is a precise visual moment that allows you to see the very frame so you can match to the audio frame. If either the sound or visual cue lasts for multiple frames, then you don't know which of the frames to sync to.

The audio beeps and visual color flashes in this app are not quick events, they're recorded over multiple frames is media.

Am I wrong about this?

What's wicked cool is the simple method of changing the slate information. I love it but it simply is not an accurate syncing tool. Am I the tool? Am I missing something??
WebbeeMan,
Really nice app
I'm very new to video production so my review is from the beginner level. The product does all that I could need and think it's great. I would like to add a few more beeps when the audio fires to help make syncing easier but that's just a wish list item and not a hit against the app.
JP Rob,
Works Perfectly
You could pay $30 for some cool features on some other app, but this app, a note pad, and a pen will get the job done just as well!
KrisMonroe,
Well..
I get the simplicity, but two clapping hands make a much better sound and visual to sync with.
And this doesn't record any shots.. It lets you name the shot, then blinks and beeps.

I think many people will love it and find some fantastic use out of it! But it doesn't fit any workflow I'd work it.
scoresofar,
Previous version was great
...and now the numbers are so small and the red / green flash only highlights within the borders -
Making it difficult for an editor to see the numbers clearly or sync the sound - which is kind of the point! Please change this back.

Latest Version
Truly loved this app til the most recent update. Now the text is very small and impossible to see quickly when using my video editing software. Please bring back larger typeface!
Marcus DeSade,
It Doesn't Properly
When I enter the information for the shot, the "shot" and "take" fields overlay the title so that it cannot be seen. Also, I haven't figured out how to "start" the slate. There are no labeled buttons or instructions.

The old maxim is true: you get what you pay for.
