Description

Note Flash helps you improve your sight reading skills for sheet music. This is the most intuitive way of learning how to read sheet music notes as it listens via the microphone or a connected MIDI instrument to make sure you play the correct note in the correct octave. Note Flash is the ONLY app which also has accidentals (sharp and flat notes) along with ledger lines for advanced players. Note Flash is also the ONLY app to show graphs on your progress in recognizing notes faster. This way you will know which notes you are spending more time thinking.

**How to use**

- Best results via a MIDI connected instrument. I developed and tested using a Yamaha P115 Piano connected to iPhone/iPad with this cable (other MIDI cables should work too):
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0829NV65Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1UM1J239QRPCJ&psc=1

Play the Note shown on screen on the piano and the app will listen via the microphone or via the connected MIDI instrument. You must play in the correct octave too - Note Flash is very intelligent to recognize the correct octaves.

If played correctly, the app shows a new note on screen. If you can't remember, then you can tap "Show Hint". The app is built for infinite practice which encourages practice more as it makes note reading into a game.

Note Flash learns which note you are getting wrong or spending more time thinking and shows you more often. You can view your progress graphs for each note and both staff. This way you will know exactly how long you spend thinking of each note and how it's improving!

You can select which hand you would like to practice or you can do both randomly. You can also choose to show accidentals - sharp, flats as well enable ledger lines for more advanced students.

The app comes with a variety of beautiful themes and you can use your own picture too for the theme.

The app contains no ads for a distraction free experience.

Please note that the app needs microphone access to listen to your piano. The app does NOT connect to the internet and your microphone data is completely safe as it never leaves your phone.

I recommend using a MIDI connected piano. If you use the microphone and are having trouble detecting the notes, go to my app's settings and change the "Sensitivity". Default value is 5.

If you have any feedback, please contact us at:
[email protected]

I have made this app with love because I myself struggled to read music when learning piano and the old paper flash cards were just not effective! So I really hope this helps you and your students out!

- The timer now only starts when you press the first correct note. This prevents your average from being skewed while you position your hand then pressing the first note. Note that this will work best when using MIDI and not the microphone as the microphone might pick up "noise" which can be the "correct" note.
- App now works in upside down orientation too - this might help users who have a phone connected via MIDI as the USB port can now be at the top and practice sight reading.
- Added MIDI support: Now you can practice via a MIDI connected instrument. I developed and tested using a Yamaha P115 Piano connected to iPhone/iPad with this cable (other MIDI cables should work too): https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0829NV65Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1UM1J239QRPCJ&psc=1
- Increased the microphone sensitivity of the app and added a new setting to change it.
- Fixed a bug where custom note collections would lose the sharp & flats after restart.
- Reduced the frequency of review prompt.
- Updated App Store metadata.
- Switched to blue color theme.
- Small UI tweaks.

We listened to you and made a bunch of improvements from you feedback:
1. We removed all ads from the app for a pure distraction free experience even for free users!
2. Added a play and pause button in the app.
3. Added a pure white background and a pure black background theme.
4. The Treble and Bass sign on the staff is now accurate.
5. The Note on the staff is now accurate and touches the lines just like real sheet music on paper.
6. The charts now say "Average: X seconds" instead of the old short form "s" only.
7. A few users mentioned that the hints should use the traditional form of naming. For example previously, a E note would have a hint "E or F flat". Now there is a switch in the settings called "Traditional note hints" which if on, will only say "E" in the hint.
8. A few small UI tweaks to make the app more appealing and accurate to real sheet music.

1. Fixed the auto-dimming issue.
2. Added Halloween & Christmas themes
3. Now you can add custom notes to practice with. You start off by creating a new collection (example C Scale). Then you add notes to it. The app displays a grand staff with how much average time you are spending on each note (including that specific Octave). You can tap these notes to add to the collection. Flats, Naturals and Sharps are all supported.

For scales, you can keep the shuffle option off. For others, you can enable shuffle option.

Notes can be deleted from this collection. They can also be re-arranged in a "un-shuffled" collection by long pressing on a note and moving it around.
This grand staff is also a good way to know how you are doing on individual notes in each Octave as the graphs only showed overall average time.

Revised review
After a few days I decided to try the contact us option within the app again. It worked. I was able to reach out to the developer. The app is now working as it is designed to function.
My one suggested upgrade would be to add midi and Bluetooth capabilities.
A big thank you to the developer!

Previous one star review that I upgraded to four-star.
I had no intention of writing a negative review until after attempting to contact them through the app. However the contact us link in the app is not functioning. I also tried the app support link right here within the App Store. That particular app support link takes you to a non-existing Twitter account. So I am left with no choice. My first disappointment was the free version offers nothing. They would be better off giving you the full version for two weeks, or something like that. However the app is only four dollars so I went ahead and purchased to experience the full version.
The app is not picking up the sound of my keyboard. Therefore it is stuck on one note and wont switch to a new note. The microphone option is turned on within the app. I have also restarted my device which is a 2018 iPad. Hopefully the developers respond to this feedback so that I can have the problem resolved or a refund. Then I would be happy to upday my review. The app is useless as it is.

Sound
It would be a lot better if it had a sound!

Has potential but needs work
I think this app is a good idea and I do enjoy it. It’s nice how you can customize which notes you want to work on. There is a bit of a problem with accuracy. I purposely pressed the wrong key a few times to test the accuracy of this app and it did fail to catch these mistakes a lot. My daughter came in the room and coughed and it went onto the next note as well. There were a few times that it would catch mistakes but not as often as I would have expected it to. I would like to point out that I am playing on a piano that was just tuned by a technician two weeks ago. I do like the app and I think it’s alright for people who already know their way around the piano and just want to become faster with their sight reading, but if you’re a beginner and you’re just learning I wouldn’t suggest it.
Joe MK 2,
Says wrong notes are right
It says wrong notes are correct and is extremely inaccurate. There’s a setting that lets you turn the sensitivity up or down but it still will go to the next note and show you did it right even if play a note that’s not even close. It also sometimes skips through a few notes even when you does play anything.
Avid fane,
Not very responsive
Finding this a bit frustrating for sure hitting the right key at times and it’s not registering so this is very frustrating and could be misleading and detrimental. Anyone has any suggestions in regard to this issue would really appreciate knowing about it

Great tool for learning music
Help me remember all notes
tkdcal,
The feedback nagging is very annoying
This program requires concentration to learn the placement of notes on the staff. The constant nagging makes this impossible. I paid for this app fair and square. I didn’t pay to get nagged every few minutes. Knock it off,
okpkpjgf,
App needs a lot of help!!
I purchased this app to help me on some sight reading. Now, I didn’t have super high hopes because it’s pretty cheap but this app is not even worth the money. Even if you hit the wrong key it goes to the next note as if you hit the correct one. This app will not help me improve. Save your money.
Neilo888,
Unreliable note recognition via iPad microphone
Tested it out and often had to play the same (correct) note a few times before the app recognized it. If it worked it would be great, but unfortunately it didn’t work for me.
KLFleming55,
Poor
It appears that it fails to respond to correct note played frequently why. Probably to frustrate you enough to buy “the pro” app
