Description

In contrast to Screen Time, one sec delays access to apps and websites instead of blocking them completely – this is fundamentally different than any other screen time tool you’ve tried before!

The effectiveness of one sec has been confirmed in a peer-reviewed scientific study with the Max-Planck Institute and Heidelberg University: app usage drops by 57% on average!

Fight the social media algorithms and win back control over your phone usage & your subconsciousness!

“one sec” uses Shortcuts Automation to toggle a deep breath animation whenever you open one of the configured apps (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube…). This breaks unconcious social media habits short-term (literally, as soon as you have set it up) and even helps long-term by adding more friction when opening these apps.

Did you really want to open Instagram? Or was it just because you're bored waiting for your bus?
This app helps you to reflect your actions, thoughts, and feelings; disrupting harmful social media habits with mindfulness.

On top of that, “one sec” also contributes your mindful moments to the Health App via HealthKit.

May 18 is Global Accessibility Awareness Day!

In spirit of this day, I have been working on making one sec more accessible for everyone:

This update adds a new dyslexic font to one sec:

The dyslexic font is specifically designed to assist individuals with dyslexia in having a more comfortable and efficient reading experience.

By incorporating unique letter shapes, varied spacing, and other visual enhancements, this font aims to reduce common reading difficulties faced by those with dyslexia, such as letter-swapping or mirroring.

If enabled, all tutorials will be displayed using the dyslexic font, potentially making it easier for users with dyslexia to process and understand the content.

———

On top of that, this update contains a ton of smaller bug fixes and improvements.

And if you look closely, you can spot some hints on what will come with the next big update.
3.4.2
2023-04-14
- Fixes an issue where the permission for “Don’t get lost notifications” wasn't asked for.
- Fixes an issue where “Github” and “FIFA Companion” would not appear in the list of apps to be intervened by one sec.
- Fixes an issue where one sec would crash when the device was set to French during the setup.

Also, of course, includes the improvements from the small update 3.4.1:
- Fixes an issue where a block session wouldn't be displayed correctly.
- Fixes an issue where one sec would crash on iOS 14.4 and earlier.

Journal with joy: join the journey with one sec’s new journaling intervention:

- If enabled, the journaling intervention will prompt you to write 25 words the first time you open social media in the morning (and in the evening). Otherwise, you’ll see the normal intervention.
- You can also directly start a new journal entry from the “Good Morning Countdown” or healthy alternatives.
- Like all data in one sec, your journal entries are stored on your device (and in your private iCloud container), I cannot access them.
- Journaling, and reflecting on your emotions and what you’re thankful for is a very healthy habit that sparks happiness (according to science)! I hope that one sec disrupting a bad habit can help to spark new, positive habits in your life. That’s why I created this feature.

◆ How to enable the new Journaling Intervention ◆

Go to one sec settings → "Healthy Habits" and you’ll be able to enable morning / evening journaling interventions. Force yourself to journal, reflect on your feelings the first time you open an app after waking up—and again in the evening before going to bed. You can also always add entries to your journal via the "Healthy Alternatives" within interventions.

◆ Journal Emotion Explorer ◆

On top of that, I’ve added an “emotion explorer” into the Journaling Intervention. I know it can be hard sometimes to figure out the (complex) emotions that we feel, and I believe structuring them can help a bit to navigate and identify the right ones.

◆ Journal Prompt Generator ◆

Depending on the context, the journal can optionally display prompts:

- Morning Reflection
- Evening Reflection
- Mid-Week Reflection
- Week Reflection
- Month Reflection

◆ Journal History ◆

You can see all journal entries in one sec → customize → Journaling → History. It’s such a cool thing to read the entries of your past self – even if it’s just two weeks ago.

…and there is even more:

◆ Sync with Structured: adding Colors! ◆

You can now adapt one sec’s intervention behavior based on the color of ongoing, unfinished tasks in Structured. Please make sure you have both the latest Structured & one sec version installed to make this work. You can find the new options in one sec → customize → Structured.

◆ Some small improvements and bug fixes ◆

- Fixes an issue where the one sec Safari Extension wouldn’t block apps during active block sessions while the intervention schedule was off.
- You can now allow BeReal to be opened once per day without intervention.
- You can now edit app-specific settings at the bottom of each app statistics.
- Fixes an issue where the Intention Picker wouldn’t be shown for the “Follow the Dot” intervention.
- Fixes an issue where the status bar and the outer progress indicator wouldn’t be visible for apps with a complete dark background (e.g. BeReal) during the “Follow the Dot” intervention.
- Fixes an issue where the iOS Safari Extension would state that it’s set up with one sec even through you’ve pressed cancel.

I really hope you enjoy these big + small improvements!

Announcing the biggest collab in AppStore history!!

one sec now integrates with Structured, an app made by my friend and fellow indie dev, Leo Mehlig. **Structured** is a planner app that visualizes your tasks in a beautiful timeline of your day.

This small update fixes an issue where the Structured integration wouldn’t block app while the normal intervention wasn’t scheduled to run. Also fixing a crash when the Structured intervention was triggered by a custom app.

Also fixed:

- a bug where the “adult content detox” feature wouldn’t work.
- a bug where the one sec widget wouldn’t get updated

Also, if you haven’t read the release notes of one sec 3.2, here’s a quick overview of what’s new:

- one sec is now much faster (so you will see less (or even nothing) of distracting apps before the intervention kicks in).
- Much improved customization settings for interventions.
- Scheduled blocking.
- New Intention picker.
- More languages.
- Adult Content Detox.

3.0
2022-04-05
I’ve been working hard for the last 10 weeks on this update for one sec.
Indeed, there have been so many improvements that I decided to jump to the next major version: one sec 3.0 is here!

NEW APP ICON
To celebrate the launch of this big update, we’ve designed a new app icon for one sec: showcasing the brief moment of reflection of your habits, disrupting your app usage patterns.
We’re now making use of the new gradient in the app icon throughout the app as well – and added a new primary color for buttons and highlights.

NEW EXERCISES
- Rotate Phone: very annoying, because you have to physically rotate your device three times in order to unlock the app. My idea is also, that additional senses (using your hands, haptics) makes you more aware and helps to disrupt habits.
- Black screen: Fades out into black, and takes some time to come back to let you continue into the app.
- Minimal breathing: Reduces colors, optimized for dark mode.

NEW STATISTICS
- Much improved app stats page.
- You have now a better overview about your progress.
- one sec now shows how much time it has already saved you.
- Prediction for how much time you’ll save per year (at your current pace).

NEW: HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES
Get concrete and actionable healthy alternatives when opening social media apps:
- Add sports, hobbies, and well-being activities.
- Add close friends and family contacts to get suggestions to call or text them.
- Add photo albums to get suggestions to take a look at nice memories and pictures of loved ones.
- Get reading suggestions from one sec‘s reading list.
- Connect one sec with your calendar and reminders to help you get more structured.
- Get suggestions for good apps, such as eBook readers, podcasts, music, yoga, meditation.

NEW: MORNING COUNTDOWN
one sec won’t let you access configured apps directly after waking up (integrates with HealthKit).

ADVANCED SCHEDULING
- you can now change one sec’s schedule for each weekday.
- New Siri Shortcut for Focus Mode.

REFINED DESIGN
- Restructured + regrouped settings panel (incl. privacy + data tab).
- More granular settings for each configured app and website.
- New exercise picker, giving a visual preview of what to expect.

OPTIMIZED TUTORIALS
- Setup and App Closing Tutorials: send the tutorial to your own email address or AirDrop them to your computer.
- Redesigned setup / tutorial pages including screenshots.
- New tutorial videos.

Dylan_B_S,
Love this app!
This app is super useful because it reduces that immediate hit of dopamine when you have to wait for which ever social media app you hate to love to open. I recently read “Atomic Habits” by James Clear and was looking for ways to reduce my screen time. While Apple’s native “app limit” feature is nice, it doesn’t create that immediate friction I need to stop myself from mindlessly opening reddit and scrolling like a zombie.

There are a few things I wish this app could improve on. The first is that I wish the setup was simpler. I understand that given the closed-door nature of Apple’s products that this might be difficult. The second is that I wish the desktop browser extensions were more fleshed out. While I appreciate the macOS app and Safari extension, I use Chrome as my browser on my MacBook Pro, so it would be a lot more useful to me if the Chrome extension had more features. Overall though really great app!
Bob Goodenhym,
Almost A Prefect App
Firstly I want to say that is app is %100 worth the money. The app's main feature where it focuses you to wait an certain amount of time before opening a configured app is prefect for curbing mindless dopamine hunting. Using this app has certainly brought back intentionality to my phone use. That being said there are two curial features I wish this app had that would make it prefect. The first is that it's too easy to turn off blocks and interventions, I wish I could setup a passcode needed to turn off blocks and interventions. Ideally one would have a trusted person setup the passcode so that one wouldn't be able to turn it off even if they wanted to. I often find a flimsy reason to turn off a block or intervention and I end up relapsing. The second thing I wish this app had is the ability to set daily allowances for app use that would then block the app after the allowance ran out. I understand that somethings are not possible within the apple ecosystem so if that is the case with this things I will change my rating to 5 stars. I will also change my rating to 5 stars if these features do get added.
groundflax,
Gives you your time back
I’ve been using the app for one day and it’s already giving me so many hours back in my day. The disturbing part is how it reveals the depths of your addiction. Today it blocked my attempts to open Twitter 107 times, and since I downloaded the chrome extension too it blocked Reddit and Twitter about another 100 times on there. It was just a mindless habit that would have added up to hours per day.

The concept behind this app is so simple yet somehow Apple couldn’t figure it out with all their brainpower. As we all know the screen time feature is practically useless. When you get the delay screen, it sort of jolts you as if from sleep, and you don’t even remember having opened the app in the first place. I definitely applaud this app and highly recommend it, it’s only been a day but I think it will be life changing.
kataud,
do this for yourself.
a few months ago, the thought of getting off of social media was terrifying. it was such a crutch and time-passer for me, and i thought i would be missing out on so much, even though i knew how much negativity it brought me. this app is amazing. after using the breathe and focus feature everyday, i found SO much time in my day, and my mood significantly improved. once i noticed these improvements, after a month and over 336 hours of time saved, i finally broke away from social media. i feel better than ever, and the slow progression of mindless scrolling to intentional abstinence has blown my mind. thank you for this app.

*update*
exactly a year later and this app still helps me everyday. i saved 3.1 WEEKS of time last year through one sec, and i could not recommend it enough.
witeowl,
I hate* this app
But that’s because it works! Screen time just trained me to mindlessly hit the “15 more minutes” button. The interruptions this app gives actually make me think before opening the things I unthinkingly open (or be too annoyed to open them – you’ll see what I mean). The only thing I don’t see (yet) is the ability to outright block an app after having used it for a set amount of time for the day. If I’ve spent an hour on a particular social media site already, maybe I don’t need to be there again today. But as far as snapping myself out of habitual mindless openings and endless scrolling (Oh! Did I mention that I also find the “Are you really still on that app?” pokes incredibly fantastic? Well, I do!), this is the best I’ve found.

Integration Broken, No Response From Developer
Edit: I received a response from the team with a solution. Although it took a few days, I’m happy with the result!

I was primarily excited to use this app because of the integration with structured. Unfortunately, it proved to either be extremely buggy or not work at all. I reached out to the support team and got a basic response within a couple of days that didn’t resolve the issue. I sent videos and more information of the bug, waited 3 days with no response. On top of that, deleting items does not seem to work (you have to delete the shortcut, but the app doesn’t notify you). General bugginess with no support. Disappointed because this app has a lot of potential.
angelarennie,
Excellent new feature!
I found this app very useful for getting me out of the pattern of ending up on social media without meaning to. My thumb will just take me there! Now this app gives me a chance to change my mind. In previous versions, the flaw was if I was actually trying to make an Instagram post I needed to switch between Instagram and my notes app or my photos app. Then I had to watch the automation every time I switched back to Instagram and ended up disabling the automation because it was too annoying. Now there’s a new feature that allows you to switch back-and-forth for a limited amount of time and still keep the automation set. This is great! Great job great developers! Super useful app!
Dudoiselle,
Meh
First I got to say I am using the free version. It gives you one app to use the function for. Which is fine and I do not criticize.

However, my two star review is mainly made up of for one it more often than not asks you to upgrade to pro instead of giving you the one deep breath exercise which makes me more annoyed than helps me to be more mindful.

I didn’t know I could only have one app which is why I had a second app set up with it. The app then prompted me to either upgrade to pro or chose between the two apps. I chose and even deleted the action I said up in shortcuts but it will ask me now to choose between both apps or upgrade over and over again. Pretty annoying bug.

And then, money might not be a factor for you, but it is for me, so this last point might be irrelevant; I do not understand what justifies the price of the app for the full version. $50 for a perpetual license is just not realistic for the average person, neither adding yet another subscription of $4 per month ($18.5 if you pay for the whole year up front). I really wish app creators would realize this.

TL;DR I like the idea but it’s too buggy in general and too spammy with their subscription service which is also overpriced. I will just uninstall and go back to leaving my phone in a different room again.
Victor Dweck,
Best app ever made
I've probably written one other review in my entire life. This app is genius. It's clearly backed by science, and it puts Apple's "Focus Mode" to shame. It's so good that Apple may rip it off some day, so if you're the dev, be on the lookout. I also love that it's inexpensive and very affordable. All in all, it gets the job done and has saved me hours of procrastination and kept me away from the screen. Like other reviewers, I often want to to just get rid of the smartphone altogether, but need it for practical reasons like work. This app makes it worth it. If there is one app you ever buy from the App Store, make it this one. P.S. I discovered it from its promotion within Structure (a neat app, but not nearly as useful)
photosynnthesis,
Lifechanger!
As someone with ADHD, who finds it incredibly difficult to finish work, this app is amazing and a lifechanger! It helps me stay off of Instagram (which makes me depress every time I get on it) and it also helps me get work done! Not only that, it's amazing in the sense that it helps you think about if you really need to be on social media/websites instead of doing work.

There is one thing that I wish would be possible: to be able to sync apps and websites through a single account across different platforms. I want to be able to set up interventions on one device (e.g. iphone) and have it automatically transfer over to my ipad and mac.

Thank you for such an amazing app!
