2.0
2023-03-23
Welcome to the biggest update to Outread ever. If you find any new bugs or inconsistencies please let us know at [email protected] Hope you enjoy it!

UPDATED DESIGN AND FONTS

We went through the whole app and updated the design to better match your needs and make the app easier and faster to use. We also updated the font selection with new fonts that work better with speed reading. Specifically: Noto Sand and Garamond were scientifically tested as leading to better speed while still maintaining the comprehension.

CONTINUOUS SCROLLING IN HIGHLIGHTING READING

We heard your feedback and added a new mode to Highlighting Reading that will continuously keep the highlighted text centered vertically on the screen. Try it by enabling in Reader Preferences > Highlighting Preferences > Continuous Scrolling.

NEW MARKER OPTIONS IN HIGHLIGHTING

Next to text dimming, we added Marker and Underline options (find them in Reader Preferences > Highlighting Reading). Long-time Outread users will remember the Marker option from the past, the new one however works better than ever and is also nicely animated.

ANIMATED HIGHLIGHTER MOVES

We added slight animations when the highlighter moves. That should make the reading more pleasant and easier on the eyes. It’s disabled when you update from an older version, but you can enable it in Reader Preferences > Highlighting Reading > Smooth Chunk Changes.

SPEED AND MOVE CONTROLS

Instead of going to preferences, you can quickly adjust speed and rewind/fast forward reading without stopping. There are also keyboard shortcuts (W, A, S, D).

READING SPEED TEST

New update lets you quickly check your reading speed and comprehension by reading a text and answering a few questions about it.

LIVE PREVIEW IN READER PREFERENCES

When you change your speed reading preferences, such as speed or chunk length, you’ll immediately see how they work in little previews on top of Reader Preferences screen.

QUICK ACTIONS ON READER SCREEN

The ellipsis button in the top-right corner will now let you quickly archive, delete, favorite and share the item you’re currently reading.

IMPROVED TEXT DETECTION ON WEBSITES

We updated the algorithm that detects the content on websites – it should produce cleaner results in most cases.

MANUAL WEBSITE IMPORT FALLBACK

If the app can’t automatically detect the text on a website, it now offers a quick way for you to manually pick the text from Safari.

AUTOMATIC TAGGING

When you add items, Outread will now add more types of tags, such as Web, Scan, and more.

MANUAL TAGGING

Organize your library quickly and effortlessly by adding tags.

RETHOUGHT LIBRARY SCREEN

Instead of showing both unread and read items on a single list, we moved the archive to a separate place. You can now quickly show only Unread, Archived, Favorited or In Progress items. We also added the search feature.

ACCESSIBILITY IMPROVEMENTS

Outread comes with improved readability, most of the screens now support Dynamic Type (variable font sizes).

APP SHORTCUTS

Outread 2.0 comes with updated support for Shortcuts, now based on the new App Intents framework. You can easily add and access content in an automated way.

FOCUS FILTERS

You can now set up Outread’s library content to fit your current focus filter, e.g. show only unread items tagged **Work** when you’re in your Work focus.

Carrots&Celery,
Data Privacy
Though I haven’t tried out the app yet, I chose this reader because the developer’s privacy policy states that customer data will not be sold. The developer does use Google Firebase so I looked up the privacy policy for that service provider, which states that end user data usage is determined by the customer’s (app developer’s) policies. Other reader apps do not provide this level of privacy protection. I’ll update this review after I’ve had enough time to make an opinion on it.

Update: I’ve given it a few weeks now and I have significantly improved my reading speed. I love how easy it is to import articles and books. However, there’s already a good library of books included in the app, so users may not even need to import any books. I recommend this app for increasing reading speed without losing comprehension.
Dr. L.,
The Best
I’ve tried a lot of readers, but Outread is hands down the best. I browse The NYT and Washington Post for articles of interest. Using the Share extension I can quickly and seamlessly add them to Outread. I do most of my reading using the Spritz method, and Outread has added some fantastic features such as customizable settings for the length of pauses at the end of sentences, after commas, etc. You can sort the items in your list alphabetically, by length of article, or by items most recently added. The developers have really thought of everything to facilitate the reading process. There is even a good collection of classics you can read for free.
kintheartist,
Amazing for ADHD
The branding is focused on speed reading but the app itself is wonderful for my reading struggles. It’s so customizable, I can adjust to what I need to focus. The new centered text highlighting mode is amazing and the ability to scan books and papers and then read them in-app is SO useful for me!

The dev for this app is so awesome as well, when I emailed about how much it helps with my reading abilities with ADHD, he asked for my suggestions and feedback to improve the app even further. 5/5 one of my favorite apps ever 😄
AJShadowz,
My favorite of all
I’ve tried every speed reading app I could find on apple and google play stores... this one is hands down my favorite when it comes to functionality, simplicity, and stability. I hope this app is around forever. I use it daily and it has my literary journey so much easier. I believe it is worth every penny.

Also, the developers of this app are amazing. I had a problem after an update. They looked into it promptly.
Abe1741,
Loveeeeee it!
As someone who loves information, new ways to learn, and getting through the front pages of newspapers, this app is essential. It pays for itself. It also has classic books on there which is a nice added bonus.

Anyone who thinks ‘you’ can’t speed read, I encourage you to try this app out and see how your amazing brain works.

You can read rsvp or guided. I’m going through 20 news pieces a day and I love it!
Miranda Morgan87,
I’m shocked
I wish I started this sooner. I almost immediately was reading at a pace faster than I thought possible while also comprehending. I finished Alice in Wonderland on the app in less than 2 hours in 1 sitting and then moved on to read almost 50 pages of a book that had been taking me forever to get past the intro. I’m addicted to this app!
Davygreatideas,
Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP)
I have been looking for an app like this and I have finally found it. My main goal was to find an RSVP that I could us with my personal e book collection. This app allows me to do just that and much more. I strongly recommend this app if you want to read your personal ebook collection... I rarely rate a product ... this one deserves my time...
Jujube890,
Great app!
This seems like a really cool way to read faster, because often times I find myself getting distracted while reading and this helps me a lot. It would be really cool thought if we could have the option to link to a virtual library app like Libby for example, so we could just quickly link books to the app. Other then that this seems really cool!
WiseArts,
The best speed-reading app!
I wasted time (and money!) on a few “competitors” before I discovered this app. The interface is elegant and easy-to-use. The Plus version is TOTALLY worth it. Unlike other apps, the file import actually works!!! Really enjoying reading ePub files, and the Pocket integration is awesome too. Can’t wait to see what’s in the future for this app. It’s amazing. Thank you so much.
Ant771771,
Great product with great customer service
The product is fantastic. Works well for practicing speed reading, and gives you a huge catalogue of classics for practice. Moreover, I had an issue and emailed customer service, and they responded immediately and fixed the issue quickly. Highly recommend.
