Yes this is your best reference manager!
This is probable my first review on AppStore. The reason I start this review is because you should not miss this wonderful app because this is your best reference manager! As a researcher, I have used zotero + papership to manage the papers I read in the past few years. One of the biggest issue is I am not able to label or categorize my papers very well. But Paperpile saves my life and provides this feature! This app is wonderful, and I definitely recommend this app to everyone who has the need to read and annotate many academic papers! One feature I would highly expect is to support browser. Currently you can only use it on chrome, which means they only provide the extension on chrome for you to save the paper as well (from arxiv for example). It would definitely be a huge help if we can support safari and other browsers in the future! Love Paperfile ❤️

Best reference manager for scientists
Paperpile today is simply the best reference manager for researchers, having used Mendeley, Papers, Zotero, and BibDesk in the past. All aspects of the experience and the app are polished and functional. Adding new papers, downloading PDFs automatically through your university proxy, annotating / highlighting, and organizing your library all work seamlessly. The citation experience in google docs is excellent even with many users even when not sharing the same paper library. The latex experience via Overleaf could be improved a bit with some kind of automatic BibTex export, but overall it’s better than any of the alternatives. Highly recommended.

Great but a little bare bones
I prefer this reference manager over all of the others on the market, but I do find it lacking in a few features that would add so much to the user experience. For one, it would be great if we could upload PDF files of journal articles directly from the iPhone or iPad app instead of having to go on the Chrome web app to do so (because of the way my institution proxy access works, automatic downloads only work around ~80% of the time). It would also be nice to see some more configuration options in the settings menu. I also want the ability to manually edit citation fields. In the case of some older papers going back decades, the digital archiving isn’t perfect so my collection of citations doesn’t look as neat & tidy as I’d like. These minor grievances aside, it is really a great system and I will continue to rely on Paperpile for my references.

Best reference manager I’ve tried
I’m a researcher and the university where I’m currently working, offers Endnote for free. After giving it a try I simply didn’t get hooked. I also tried others like Mendeley without success. But then it was Paperpile’s turn, and I instantly loved it for just one simple reason: Tags! I had no idea how useful it is to have color labels (on top of folders) to organize your references. I wish I knew about it when I was doing my PhD! Definitely worth the price. To the developers: please make a desktop app! It would be great to be able to annotate PDFs within the app just as in iOS.

Best reference manager + editor
Have you struggled deciding between Zotero, Mendeley, Endnote on the one hand, and Adobe Reader, Notability, LiquidText on the other? Have you wished there was an app that allowed for the editing flexibility of the latter apps, while retaining an organized version of your literature review? Well... look no further. This app is just excellent. Ever since I discovered it, I immediately jumped into the beta version and it has been a blast. I’m so happy to see it now open for everyone else.

Best reference manager available!!
I love Paperpile. I’ve been using it for over 2 years and there’s nothing better out there. I can search papers on my phone and add them to Paperpile on the go (with PDFs). When I see a good paper on Twitter I can add it to Paperpile to read later. You can create tags to organize your papers and search easily. I’ve written papers, abstracts, book chapters and collaborated with colleagues using google docs. They recently released a beta word plug in and I’m already impressed with the ease of use. You need this reference manager!!

Love Paperpile though slightly frustrated with the iPad app
Have loved Paperpile ever since I’ve been in undergrad; it has been my go to reference manager and pdf annotator for years! I was so excited to see the app come to iOS, though I am seeing some issues with going back and forth from the iPad version and the web version. My annotations do not sync properly between the two. Paragraphs I highlighted on one are in complete different places on the other! Makes taking notes a little difficult. Hopefully this problem will be fixed soon, but I am so excited to see the app grow, and would recommend it to anyone !

Can’t log in to university account on Mobile.
I use Paperpile through the online application and chrome extension, and it is generally a good citation manager. However, the padOS / iOS application is unusable due to the inability to log in to my university account which has an authentication layer. The Google login has an authentication error for all login attempts, and if I attempt to circumvent that issue by logging in online on my iPad I get the infuriating prompt that I should download the app. For this to be worth my while, one of two things needs to happen. 1. Disable the painfully obnoxious prompt to download the app when on a mobile device, or 2. get the (university) authentication layer to work when using the google login option.

5 stars but…
It is the best one I've used, I would definitely give 5 stars. However, please please please fix the issue of highlighting function for iPad. If I highlight something with one color and some content is kind of overlapping with that, the color of the previously highlighted content will be changed unexpectedly if I change the color of the overlapped content. It is really annoying. I hope it will be fixed soon.

Paperpile user for over 2+ years. Great, but could be the best!
Paperpile is the best scientific paper manager, hands down. Been using it to manage my paper library through my PhD and the ability to share papers from chrome or iOS is amazing.
I have also been using the iOS beta for a year or so and while it has come a long way there are a few things that keep me exporting Paperpile to notability:
- No ability to paste images; I often find that I paste reference images from other places into a paper. This is pretty important and is not currently possible AFAIK.
- The apple pencil support is not as great as Notability, there are still a few bugs that cause extra lines to get drawn around the place (especially while zooming close to when something is written).
- Needs ability to snap shapes like squares, triangles, etc.
