Pianist, the ORIGINAL iPhone piano, turns Professional for the iPad with photo-realistic graphics and an unbelievable sound. Pianist Pro was the number one music app for the iPad at release.

- Standard MIDI File import and export.
- Audio (WAV) file export.
- 16 professionally recorded instruments (pianos, organs, guitars, synths).

Pianist Pro is a virtual piano designed specifically for the iPad, with the same great interface and style that has made Pianist the best known piano on the iPhone, and a whole host of new features too.

It features full MIDI import and export capability, allowing you to record song ideas while on the road and export them via MIDI to your Digital Audio Workstation back at the studio. You can also use Pianist Pro as a great master MIDI keyboard, either with USB, CoreMIDI, or via Wi-Fi. Drive your soft or hard synths wirelessly from the sofa, or from another room. Pianist Pro can even be used as a MIDI sound source, driven by an external hardware keyboard.

A built-in arpeggiator allows the user to create perfectly timed runs just by holding down a few keys, and complex patterns of notes and chords can be programmed into the arpeggiator and played back live. Pianist Pro makes it easy to play shuffle-beat blues piano, complete with walking bassline and overlayed jazz chords - all by simply holding down a single chord. Changing the chord changes the melody but maintains the tight rhythm provided by the arpeggiator. A drum machine offers an elegantly simple interface for adding rhythm, with a choice of drum kits to suit a range of musical styles. While a delay effect can be used to bring energy and interest to a synth bassline, or guitar or piano riff.

The 'Scale Piano' interface allows the user to select a musical scale from a large choice of presets (eg. Natural Minor or Pentatonic Blues) or define their own scales from scratch. Notes and runs on that scale can then be played back in any key, simply by sliding a finger up and down a virtual touch-pad on-screen.

Musicians at all levels have raved about Pianist Pro. Visit our website (moocowmusic.com) for demonstration videos, a full description of functionality including the user manual, and more screenshots.

Reviews

C. Puffer,
Ultimately does the one thing I need it to
Frankly, this review would be a lot harsher if I'd wanted this virtual piano to sound decent and be vaguely like playing an actual piano. Unintuitive to the point of being poorly designed UX aside, the sample playback engine is remarkably poor. Even using an 88 key digital piano as a controller keyboard, it is almost impossible to get a decent performance out of this. The samples don't respond to sustain and key velocity in any sensible way, forget about aftertouch or ghost notes. It plays like a handful of single-velocity samples with poorly executed ASDR envelops, and no round-robin switching between sustain and held notes. It's like banging on a mediocre sounding upright with a hammer for all of the nuance you can get from it. In the end however, what I needed was an app that would record MIDI while I sketched out songs, and then send MIDI out back into my DAW later in. And alas, GarageBand doesn't do MIDI out. This is actually a decent MIDI recorder. So I use an external metronome and the audio of my Casio digi piano, and it works well enough in that regard. But unless you are using this app in this one specific way, just buy GarageBand, whose sampled pianos shine a harsh light on this app by some measure.
Houseofnoel,
I Love This App!
I have used this app for many years. I am a vocalist and although the app has had more capabilities than I need I enjoy using it. I can play scales, play in more than one octave, and play in different patches. I have always appreciated being able to use this app!
Mike✔️✔️,
I HATE THIS APP
THIS APP DOSENT LET YOU IMPORT UR OWN MUSIC AND IS A WASTE OF UR MONEY I HATE IT I WANT TO DO TAYLOR SWIFT AND ALL THEY HAVE IS FIR ELISE I HATE THIS APP THE KEYS DONT TUNE AND I HATE IT DONT BUY IT!
bluetoucan,
Outstanding keyboard app
I'm a working musician and this app is one of the primary reasons I bought an iPad. It's not 100% perfect yet, but it's the best keyboard app in the App Store without question, and I've started recommending it to my students and colleagues.

Beautifully configurable keyboard, excellent samples, almost no latency (extremely responsive, in other words), close attention to sonic quality (for example, no clipping no matter how many samples are sounding at a time -- unlike many other App Store instrument apps). FYI, you can easily remove the colored note names from the keys.

Only real issue is how much screen real estate is used for controls that can't be hidden. This is both visually distracting and wasteful of space, especially in the dual-keyboard mode. My favorite improvement would be an option to have only keys onscreen (you'd touch and hold a certain corner, or a tiny "i" somewhere, when you wanted to change info/options) -- or at the very least an option to grey out the controls so they're not so distracting visually.
Frictionzone,
Pretty good
This is an alright app. The sampling for the instruments is pretty good. There were a couple things that would have raised the score for me. I bought this because it had the option of exporting audio as a wave. Yes it does this but in order to use that audio you then have to hook it back up to your computer and move it to a different area of your iPad. There are several music apps that have found ways around this limitation and since this product is not a DAW it should have an easier way to move the audio around. Seems to be a problem with a lot of the iPad music apps. Great functionality but terrible options for audio transfer. Fix this and I think it will be a great way to record piano and other sounds on the fly to be used with other daw software.
Forestcats,
Worth 10 x the price
OSC with Pianist is simply fantastic and cutting-edge. Using the Pure Data software is a little tricky and requires some configuration but the reward is great. My compliments to the MooCow people, I lost my OSC configuration with the new 1.5 version of the software, and couldn't quite remember how to regenerate the .pd script file. A tip, use the help file built into the app itself not the online version. Then it will appear in iTunes as a shared document which you can save to your desktop (right underneath your favorite DAW!). Thanks to the helpful email support, on a weekend nonetheless, I was quickly guided through the proper setup. A great sounding app as well even if you don't plan to use OSC, they must have optimized the grand piano in the new version because it sounds very very good, but that's a guess on my part. A+
freesoulvw,
Great wifi midi
I just went out and bought a new MacBook pro and the first thing I sis was look for apps that would connect through midi wifi network sessions using the Mac's audio/midi setup. I was very surprised how easy the connection was and the zero latency I got through my wifi network without having to create any special ad-hoc networks. The set up just plane works. I was controlling synths in GarageBand in seconds. The dual keyboard setup with mod wheel and volume pedal makes controlling AU instruments a pleasure. I was so happy with what I experienced that I stopped looking for other midi wifi apps! The app itself is extremely powerful even if your not going the wifi route. I loved the piano and arp as well. There are few apps we have on the AppStore that call themselves pro and actually live up to the name. This is one of them.
danersenGM,
Music to my ears
Please note (pun intended) that my experience and comments are from the perspective of a musician and not a techie.

Works
- Existing app functions excellent
- Piano sound samples superb
- Visuals, layout, and UI comfortable and logical
- File transfer excellent
- Midi export excellent
- Interface with iTunes and Garage Band flawless
- Wireless controlling excellent

* Developer responsiveness and communication exceptional = 10 stars

The app just-as-it-is deserves 5 stars and is appropriately priced.

If the following are achieved, it will merit 10 stars.

Being worked (per developer)
- More/customizable time signatures
- Creation of multiple custom scales that can be saved

Needs (per me)
- Capacity to handle/manage pick-up notes prior to the first full measure
- Ability to insert "rests"

Wishes (per me)
- Savable default application settings
- Midi file creation confirmation (Apple obstacle per developer)
- Midi library display (Apple obstacle per developer)
- Wireless file transfer

All of this has been communicated via email to the developer who has been very attentive, informative, and responsive.

Hope this is helpful.
Be Well!
GordonChil,
Wonderful Features!
I've had this app since day 1 of owning an iPad. It is one of my favorite. I just now delved in to the experience of connecting this application to Garage Band. It adds a whole new level to its usefulness.

I also love all the scales that it has. Having never actually taken an advanced music theory class, I never was able to correctly identify some scales. This app has been a way for me to learn some of them. I've been able to listen to some scales I hear in various songs, then turn to this app and find the scale there. A very satisfying experience.

Wonderful app. I would definitely purchase other applications from this developer.
Doctor of Music,
Great Features!
If all you need is a piano app for the iPad, there are others out there that are free. However, if you do any "real" work with your iPad as a keyboard, take a closer look at Pianist Pro.

The selling point for me is the MIDI interface capability through OSC, allowing the iPad to be used as a note entry device with Finale and Sibelius. It takes a bit of work to set it up, so read the provided documentation closely.

If you want to record live, an OSC connection is never going to do the trick...it will always be late. But if you want to use Finale's speedy entry or Sibelius' step entry, Moo Cow's program works great through OSC.

Think about it...a small M-Audio 25-key keyboard will set you back $125; whereas you already have an iPad and for the price of the app you can get the same functionality. Actually, my M-Audios hang up on me frequently...no problems with Moo Cow's Pianist Pro.

I'd like to see an easier way to connect OSC to a Mac (or PC) and am looking forward to seeing what the new MIDI APIs in iOS 4.2 will yield with programs like this.
