Description

Note: Version 3 is a complete rewrite of the app. The simulation will not be exactly the same as older versions, and it is still evolving so watch for updates. Some features are limited for now. Feedback is welcome!

Pinhole uses a unique method to simulate the long exposure times of a pinhole camera. It does not just simulate the distortion and visual effects, it gradually exposes the scene over time like a real pinhole camera allowing effects not achievable in other “pinhole” apps or regular camera apps.

Unlike a real pinhole camera, all photos are automatically exposed correctly no matter the exposure time.

It can optionally simulate the vignetting and/or edge light bleed typical of pinhole cameras.

Exposure time can be set to one of several presets, or it can controlled manually for shorter or longer exposures.

At any point, choose an “emphasis” image that will dominate the final output--use this to freeze a moving item in the shot (this feature is experimental and the outcome varies widely based on the scene).

Saves directly to your camera roll. Load images to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, Camera+, etc. from there.

Note: the simulation is very memory-intensive, especially on long exposures. For the best stability please close other apps and disable networking to prevent incoming calls and push notifications (put it in “Airplane Mode”). For best results, plug in your phone before beginning a long exposure.

On the "infinity" time setting, it will run until you stop it manually, it crashes, or the algorithm used runs out of memory. It will attempt to close the shutter prior to crashing due to running out of memory, but it's not always possible to catch this. Your mileage may vary -- if you're considering taking an important long-duration shot, plan ahead and run a test on the device you'll be using.

A note about the simulation accuracy: Pinhole does not have infinite depth-of-field like a real pinhole camera. The primary way this app simulates a pinhole camera is by allowing for very long exposures and simulating the visual effects. The simulation is as close as the hardware allows. Since an iOS device's camera has a lens, it is not possible to simulate a lens-less camera perfectly. If I could bypass the physical limitations of the hardware, I'd be filing patents for the technique and making a lot more money than I do selling an app. :) If this is critical to you, use a real pinhole camera or choose scenes where depth of field effects are not apparent.

Version history

3.2.0
2020-07-07
- Added file format and quality (if applicable) choices
3.1.0
2020-07-05
- Added resolution choice, including new "small", 1080p, and 4k support. The 1080p and 4k sizes will expose more slowly and will be more resource-intensive.
- Fixed a few graphical glitches in the UI.
- Minor optimizations and code updates.
3.0.0

This is a complete rewrite of the app. The simulation will not be exactly the same as older versions, and it is still evolving so watch for updates. Some features, notably resolution choices, are limited for now. Feedback is welcome!
2.3.1
2018-01-06
- iOS11 and latest devices supported
- Fix for iPhone 7/8 Plus crashes
- Minor code refresh
2.3
2018-01-02
- iOS11 and latest devices supported
- Fix for iPhone 7/8 Plus crashes
2.2
2017-01-05
- New size option: There are now three sizes: "S" (old "1/4 size"), "M" (old standard size), and "L" (new 2x larger). Larger images increase processing time and memory requirements, and could potentially lead to crashes on low-memory devices.
- Improvements in edge effects quality and generation speed.
- EXIF/XMP metadata added to images. Note this data is limited, and some values do not really apply to a pinhole photograph.
- Faster saving and higher-quality image files.
- Support for newer devices and iOS versions.
- Other miscellaneous bug fixes and updates.

To reply to the reviewer that complained that Pinhole does not have infinite depth-of-field like a real pinhole camera: Yes, you're right, it does not. The primary way this app simulates a pinhole camera is by allowing for very long exposures and simulating the visual effects. The simulation is as close as the hardware allows. Since an iOS device's camera has a lens, it is not possible to simulate a lens-less camera perfectly. 2.1.2
2015-06-26
A permanent fix for a crashing bug when running on iOS 8.3.
2.1.1
2015-05-04
-Fix for a crashing bug in iOS 8.3. This is a temporary fix requiring the Flash button to be disabled on iOS 8.3 devices only. A permanent fix will follow shortly to restore that functionality.
2.1.0
2015-04-07
- iPhone 6/6+ support
- iOS 8 support
- 64-bit support
(Note, this version requires iOS7)
2.0.1
2014-05-27
A fix for layout problems on iPads that made it seem like the app had crashed.
2.0.0
2014-04-04
- White balance, focus, and exposure customization -- you can have it set each of those once at the start of an exposure (default behavior), continuously during the exposure (old behavior), or use touch mode where touching the screen (before or during the exposure) updates them. Each of these can be set independently. Note that continuous autofocus will lead to blurrier images due to periodic refocusing.

- Ability to turn the flash on and off both before and during an exposure. Note that leaving the flash on for extended periods will drain the battery quickly.

- Increased internal algorithm capacity. This means longer exposures are possible but also increases the likelihood of crashes due to running out of memory on very long exposures.

- Maximum duration estimate shown on Infinite time mode. Note this is just an estimate and will vary due to many factors, including device speed, whether background tasks are taking processor time away from the app, and other factors. It is also not a guarantee you can successfully leave the shutter open that long.

- Larger output images (approx. 5.7 MP)

- Optimizations and performance improvements.

- Dark user interface theme.

- Minor interface changes.
1.0.1
2013-12-01
-Maintenance release
-Possibly faster startup time
-Minor graphical fixes

wolf391,
PinholeCam
The problems I ran into with this app have been resolved, but I too would like a higher resolution. I have been using this app off and on my iPad 4G Retina. It is fun to work with and I plan on using it as my go to app during a two week trip in the Oregon desert.
Occamist,
This is a big improvement
With the latest fixes this is an outstanding app.

What would make it phenomenal? The ability to control just the shutter from an Apple Watch.
Willow Tale,
Too much digital banding for my taste
Bought this a day or so ago to try it out. I like the interface and the settings panel, but even in broad daylight there’s too much banding and digital artifacts present in the images for them to look pinhole-esque. Glad the price was only a buck. Hope the quality improves in subsequent versions.
Diana-pants,
Disappointing
I am very experienced with pinhole photography and bought this app to sort of "sketch" some pinhole ideas out before making traditional photographs. This app was disappointing; it doesn't do what a pinhole camera does (only allows you to control the exposure time, which lets you make a blurry image). If you use a tripod to minimize the blur, there's no difference between a picture made with this app and taking a regular picture with the built-in iPhone camera. Anyone who knows pinhole photography knows one of its benefits is infinite depth of field (one of the distinguishing features). This app does not allow this and has minimal features to adjust; the interface is also awkward.

Save your 99 cents.

I like the app so rating high! Hoping I guys are still around to make it so the picture quality is better! Updated to the highest degree please?

Pinhole app
The most used and favorite of all my camera apps.

Doesn't work
I was so excited to find this app, but it doesn't work. Any time you try to do anything other than take a photo with the default settings, it locks up. (Ipad 3, latest iOS)
Chrisjohn12,
This app is garbage
Do not buy this app it is useless and does not even take pictures. I would rate it negative five stars if I could. Don't waste your $.99. The "support" tab doesn't work either.
一滴滴,
Lack in iPhone 6 support
I really love to rate it high but unfortunately it does not render well on my iPhone 6. Buttons are out of the screen. Hope to have a fix really soon.
