Description

PlanARoute is a great tool for creating or recording multi-stop driving, walking, cycling or point-to-point routes. More than directions from points A to B, PlanARoute gives you directions from points A to Z.

Use it to plan or record a tour or any other multi-stop journey.

Interested in knowing where you have been but do not want to waste battery power running your device’s GPS? Just take a photo at key points in your journey and PlanARoute will plot on a map those photos and generate a route with addresses, distances and directions from those photos.

Included are two example tour routes (New York and Central Park) which demonstrate the features of PlanARoute. No need to learn complex software. View and play with these example tours to learn how to use this app and use them as a model on how to create your own routes.

Features:

▪ Create walking, cycling or driving routes of up to 26 locations while connected to the internet.
▪ Create point-to-point routes with an unlimited number of locations even when your device is not connected to the internet.
▪ Preserves your privacy by storing your data on your device, not on a website, you have to log into to use. (Data is stored on your device not in iCloud, so try to backup your device periodically).
▪ Sync routes among your devices and the devices of your friends and associates by emailing the route to them.
▪ An unlimited number of routes can be saved and viewed even when your device is not connected to the internet.
▪ Emailed routes have a image of your route, a text description of your route, and both GPX and KML attachments that can be loaded into Google Maps and Earth or GPS devices.
▪ Add locations to a route by touching the map, selecting an address from your Contacts or Favorites library or by typing an address in the search area.
▪ Locations can also be added based upon the location of photos on your device or in iCloud.
▪ View a slideshow from any photos in your route.
▪ Locations can have their order, address and distance displayed on the map.
▪ Locations can be displayed on your map while not being included in your route's path.
▪ Locations can have a photo and note description attached to them and saved into a Favorites library.
▪ Location address information can be added to your Contacts Address book.
▪ The order of locations can be modified or reversed.
▪ Both visual and written directions with distance and time estimates are created for a route.
▪ Distances are measured in miles or kilometers.
▪ The distance to a pin location from your current location can be displayed.
▪ A scale of miles/kilometers is displayed at the top of your map.
▪ A compass and your directional heading can be displayed (iPhone and iPad only).
▪ Standard, satellite, and hybrid maps can be displayed.
▪ Individual Locations can be passed to and opened in Apple Maps or Google Maps (if installed).
▪ If desired, an elevation chart can be created for a route.

Replaced the Email Route menu option with Export Route menu option. Upon selecting the Export Route menu option, the user will be presented with a choice of three methods of exporting a route to another app or device.

Email format will generate an email consisting of a print out of all the locations in the route, as well as a TXT attachment which can be used to import the route into this app on other devices.

GPX format consists of the Latitude and Longitude (GPS) data of the route, which can be exported to apps that can read GPX data on this device or other devices.

KML format consists of the Latitude and Longitude (GPS) data of the route, which can be exported to apps that can read KML data on this device or other devices.

Refined the display of map area photo moments to display only those photos that are located in the map area displayed on your device.

Previously, if a single photo was located within the map area photo moment, all the photos within that moment would be displayed including photos located outside the map area of your device.

A photo moment is all the photos you took on a single day. You may have taken photos over a large area and only wish to plot those photos in one part of this large area. Now you can limit the photos to be plotted to only those photos contained in the map area displayed on your device.

Lpreilly,
Only missing voice directions
Great app. I use it to plan motorcycle trips. It would be better if it had turn-by-turn voice directions so you don't have to keep diverting your attention from the road to the map.
kashdoller,
Exactly what I have been looking for
This app is great, it allows me to easily put pins down and map out a route twisting and winding throughout neighborhoods. It even gives elevation and speed estimates, even though I’ve been having issues with that. It’s a little clunky and definitely lacking from a user experience standpoint, but I’m willing to deal with that because it generally does what it is set out to do. You can leave little notes in your pins, and set it to route out from walking, biking, or driving which is a huge plus for me. Plus I love how you can use Mapquest over google maps. Bottom line is if you are looking to plan a route for whatever reason (mine was to plan a sight-seeing tour), then this app is better than anything out there that I could find. And I tried everything from google earth to free apps, none came close to the functionality of this one. Takes a little getting used to and it’s a little quirky, but for local route planning it’s well worth the price.
gcoghill,
Useful route planner
I dropped the rating from 4 stars to 1 star.

It was frustrating enough that this app had no iCloud sync, despite having multiple device support. But I discovered all my saved routes had disappeared, and the developer told me the only solution was to to restore my entire device from a saved backup. Ridiculous.

Automatic backups are a must for any app like this where one spends hours crafting a file.

The tools and services to do so are available (iCloud, Dropbox, etc). The lack of inclusion of a backup feature is therefore a developer choice.

Others should be aware of all of this before committing to a purchase, or investing their time in creating detailed routes.

Original review:

Great app to plan out a car or bicycle trip, since it has the option to use MapQuest maps for bike directions. The elevation slider is handy for the latter.

Useful information right on the map and pins: saved location names, distances and total cumulative distance.

Locations are saved with the saved map/route. Useful for exploring multiple trips. Pins can be added and excluded from the route, to be used as reference points.

The lack of iCloud sync knocks off a star. Importing maps via email is less than ideal. I'd like to see Google Maps data be made available too.

The icon and interface is a bit lacking, but the functionality is there, which is the ultimate factor. The developer is also responsive and open to feature requests.
Lazy R,
Electric Car Necessity!!
I have been seeking an app that will allow me to plan a detailed route but document miles and estimate time to optimize range on my 2012 Nissan Leaf. This will do the trick!
I don't want the standard "fastest or shortest" option. Freeway speeds drain range. But I also can't afford to go further than needed.
With the point to point I can see the big picture of the area and select the route that will work best for the trip. Can't get to the destination and then find you don't have enough juice to get home!!
HooahEng,
Best Motorcycle route planning found
My friend and I have been testing multiple route/trip planning tools over the last three months to include the SW that came w/ his new HD Road Glide Special. Everything has been woefully inadequate. Plan a Route has been the most amazing app that we have found. Fantastic for planning, works great on my iPhone in mount so I can see the turns. If I had Bluetooth speakers would be complete.
Bottom Line if I could I would give this app 7 stars.
A.L. Harlow,
Great way to plan my biking trips
I tried a few others, but this app let's me lay pins down on a map and plan my route in the most flexible way I've found. This weekend will be the real test, as I've planned my route, will email it to my riding friends, and then will see how accurate the information is. So far, so good. Thanks for making this.
PresentL,
Welcome addition to trip planning
The app had refreshing new trip planning and sharing. Try it out.
