2.1.4
2019-12-09
Playapod 2.1 adds new discovery views including featured news feeds, popular audio and video podcasts, and ability to browse podcasts by category in addition to several other new features, tweaks, and fixes. Check out the Playapod blog for more details: https://blog.playapod.com/

Playapod 2 added tons of great features such as the Always-On Now Playing Media Bar, News & Blog Subscriptions w/ Text-To-Speech, Video Playback, Custom Groups, and much more! Version 2.0.3 adds swiping up/down support on the media bar and fixes all known bugs since v2 launched including lockscreen controls, media artwork setting, additional rss date formats, playlist drag/drop improvements, and other minor issues. Playapod 2 Feature List:

Now Playing Media Bar – Quickly access whatever is currently playing by tapping on the media bar at the bottom of the screen. It’s always on with quick access to play/pause. Tap the bar to bring up the full media player view.

News & Blogs – Add news and blog feeds into Playapod 2 which will be played using text-to-speech. Playapod 2 turns text-based feeds into podcasts allowing for progress bar access, current position, history, and bookmarking. We think this is a pretty unique feature!

Video Playback – Video playback is now supported. Tapping on the video will toggle full-screen video. Media title, description, and date are now displayed with improved landscape layout.

Content Details – Scrolling list of media items displays the description in addition to name, flags, date, size, and duration. Length of description can be configured in settings globally or per subscription. Works across Audio, Video, and Text feeds.

Recommendations – We’ve created a recommendation engine that lets you pick a subscription to get back personal recommendations of other shows that are similar. It’s a little bit experimental but seems to be working pretty good. The recommendation engine will continue to get better over time as more and more users use it.

Custom Groups & Filters – Filter content by Subscription (Favorites, Category), Media Flags (New, Listened, Downloaded, Bookmarked, Favorited), Media Type (Audio, Video, Text), and Order (Ascending, Descending). Save filters into Groups for quicker access. For example, you can create a filter for the “New” Media in the “News & Politics” Category and then save it as a group called “New News.”

Now Playing Queue – Playapod 2 will set an active queue for whatever content you start playback on. That active queue could be your playlist or it could be another list. For example, tapping on an individual show in your subscriptions and starting playback will continue playback for only that show. Tapping on ‘Now Playing’ from the menu opens up the active queue. Car Play will display whatever is in your Now Playing Queue.

External Media Files – Add media files such as audio, video, and text files for playback. For example, you can open iTunes and drag home videos and a text file of jokes into iTunes File Sharing and Playapod 2 will create a new group “Media Files” that allow for playback of your video and the reading of your jokes!

Quick Sort – Any list can be sorted by ascending or descending time including your active queue and your playlist.

Updated Feed Parser – Playapod 1 supported RSS 2.0 Media Feeds. Playapod 2 adds RSS 1.0 (RDF) and Atom Feeds that contain audio, video, and text. You can subscribe to anything! The Playapod 2 Feed Parser is very flexible and does it’s best to pull in the content along with the best photo possible. We’ve tested it with major News organizations, WordPress blogs, Reddit channels, and lots of other syndicated feeds.

High Performance - Completely redesigned the refreshing of subscriptions for faster performance while removing duplicate content.

Daniel Ruch,
Perfect For Me
I have a very specific way I like to listen to my podcasts. I am cheap and have very little free data streaming on my phone plan. I download episodes at home when connected to WiFi. I listen to them in my car while driving. Playapod makes this method a breeze. It’s easy to tap on my “downloaded” button, then easily pick the episode I want to listen to. It is the perfect app for podcasts for me.
MollyCampbell14,
Good features but buggy
I really wanted a podcast app with bookmarks, since I like to fall asleep listening to them and wanted to be able to bookmark my spot. This does have a sleep timer and bookmarks, which is great.

However, the interface is clunky and there are some glitches. It doesn’t work well with the controls on my Bluetooth earbuds - they’ve worked fine with everything else, but when I push play/pause the podcast will play, but pause doesn’t work. However when I open the app, it thinks it’s paused, and hitting play again makes the podcast start over at the point where I originally started listening when I first opened the app.
MeMeMeMeMeMeMeMe999,
Love it- but want to love it Moore!
TMSoft always does such great fun useful things, and when I saw this I was so excited. Long time TMOS listener so know it’s quality. Some things I need to figure out still.

I try to download several episodes at a time while I do other things at home. Often I ask the app to do this and when I come back there are error messages (or not) and nothing is downloaded. I’ll be in my car going to work and find there is nothing there.

Need to figure out how to keep this app “on top” so when I click my ear buds it’s there. Often times it resets meaning I have to reopen the app, make a couple of clicks, and then play my podcast. Especially a problem when exercising, running, and driving.

A couple of times now the podcast does not resume where I left off, but several minutes prior meaning repeated content. Not a huge problem, but shouldn’t happen.

Since getting this app I have seen great responses and updates to improve the experience, and look forward to more Moore!
datalore1,
Of all the podcast apps, this is my favorite
I have an old phone, and most of the other podcast apps cause my phone to crash with their interface and constant downloading. I love the simplicity of this app, and how it offers streaming/downloading options. My one suggestion would be to add a search by episode option. As of right now, there is only a search by podcast option. For example, if I want to listen to an episode on a certain topic, I could search for a episode on that subject using keywords in the episode title. Thanks!!
Shellene,
The best podcast app!
This app is already the best and only getting better. It's the only one I use now.
I'd like to see it have more than one color scheme eventually, I'm not color blind and I have a hard time with the blue on grey to see if something is played or not (of course you have the option to hide played items, but I don't have that configured right now. Also doesn't support video in a podcast feed yet.
Cliff_Pettigrew,
Really solid podcast app.
V1.2 love the new playlist feature and the ability to re-order the list. Great job. Would be great if I could re-order the individual show playlists as well. Highly recommend this app. UPDATE: either I missed it or they just added the feature to sort the individual playlist by ascending/descending, that makes it easier to listen in order, thanks TMSOFT!
Michael Muni,
Best podcast app but still needs improvement
Hands down this is the best podcast app right now but it still is lacking is two important features. #1 this app seems to download podcasts much slower than other apps. #2 the automatic downloads don’t start downloading until after I open the app while several other podcast apps will just have the podcasts already downloaded and ready to play when I open the app.
The K-T family,
Still my favorite
Playapod is the podcast app I keep coming back to, and the most recent upgrade makes it even better. New ways of organizing and viewing podcast stats, clear, sensible, etc. however, did you lose the ability to unsubscribe from a podcast in the recent update? Used to be a long press on the podcast icon got you there and it’s gone now. Otherwise it’s a great app.
Kevin S. Kelly,
Dream App …
I listen to a lot of podcasts and have for a long time. Apple’s app has been pretty terrible and is now worse than ever. Used it as long as I could … tried a few others … this one has all manner of great features and keeps me super ‘unfrustrated’ … download and dig into features … you’ll never look back!
Henry Jones Jr.,
Playapod - two thumbs up!
Far easier to use this app vs the Apple podcast App and its many incarnations. Playapod also provides short “How to” podcasts on using the app.
Selecting the “new” podcast displays new podcasts; easier to move to the podcast.
Also able to view where you stopped during a podcast, where you started, and what you’ve skipped over.
