Description

- Guide Your Steed to the Finish Line by Playing Solitaire!

Saddle up for this unique solitaire and horse-racing hybrid from Game Freak, creators of the Pokémon franchise! Pocket Card Jockey originally released to great acclaim on the Nintendo 3DS, and while the basic rules are the same, the racing segments have been reborn in glorious 3-D!

- Solitaire as Simple as Can Be!

Focus your mind and clear cards with subsequent numbers in quick succession. The more cards you clear, the better your horse's mood will be—which helps them charge energy during races!

- Mind Your Positioning While Racing!

Your position on the track determines the difficulty of your solitaire rounds. There are also special cards that can be picked up if you run over them while racing. These cards provide a variety of benefits, including leveling up your horse, learning new skills, or improving your performance in a race. Be careful though, because running too much on the outside of the track will cause your horse to lose precious stamina!

- Go For Broke in the Homestretch!

If your steed has charged tons of energy and has plenty of stamina left in the tank, they'll sprint their heart out once you enter the homestretch. Make sure not to run into other horses as you aim for first place!

- Entrust Difficult Races to Future Generations!

Take the beloved steeds you've grown on the racetrack and pair them up on the farm. The foal they produce will inherit their abilities and become your new partner on the racecourse! Breed generation after generation of racehorses in your quest to conquer all the biggest, most prestigious races in the world!

minnymont,
Very enjoyable but needs more?
This is truly an enjoyable game to play but after a while it starts to feel a bit repetitive. Of course you can breed new horses (a good part of the game) and the different traits and strengths of the horses change it up a bit. But even changing horses doesn’t help the repetitiveness Maybe it’s the monotony of the cut scenes with much the same dialogue and the appearance of the Happy Horses girl with exactly the same dialogue every time. It would be obvious from the main screen when the store is available so the cut scene seems unnecessary. But overall the solitaire is fun and seems properly balanced depending on the difficulty level. And it’s fun to try to maneuver for a win, even if the G1 races sometimes seem overly difficult. Overall, well done and recommended!
MisterVercetti,
A suggestion on Stamina
Been enjoying the game so far. That said, I do have a suggestion on how to rebalance the Stamina stat to make it more like the 3DS version. There, how much Stamina you had in the homestretch determined how many whips you’d get. Because that’s no longer the case here, having a high Stamina stat is borderline worthless due to how many ways it can be circumvented (either by buying Stamina carrots, sticking to the inside and getting stamina restoration cards, or simply playing perfect solitaire hands) and there being no reward for entering the homestretch with a high amount of stamina.

To fix this, I’d suggest adding the capability to use additional whips after you’ve expended all of your whip cards, at the cost of stamina. For example, you go into the homestretch with four whip cards. Once you’ve exhausted those, you can keep whipping, but each use beyond those four deducts a varying amount of stamina, with the exact amount depending on the pace going into the homestretch (obviously, faster pace = more stamina). That way, a horse with higher stamina than speed isn’t completely worthless for skilled players who typically end up not needing all that extra stamina, and it incentivizes smart stamina management in order to give you an extra edge in the homestretch if needed. That seemed to be the idea for the stat in the 3DS version, and it would be nice to have that implemented in some form here.
BildoBear,
One of my favorite games returns!
This game was an absolute blast on the 3DS. I was sad to hear the eShop was closing because this game would be lost to time. I’m so glad they brought it to mobile. There are several differences between the 3DS version and this one but overall the gameplay is the same.

The start solitaire is a little bit more confusing because there aren’t just gems on the cards now so it was confusing to find out what 1, 2 and 3 meant. (comfort zone) the overworld map is fun, but there are new additions that aren’t explained. I kept seeing the words “Caution!” With an orange cone under my horse and had no idea what it meant. I eventually found out that losing 3 races means retirement for that horse and it was warning me of how many loses I had. There are a lot of tips in the options menus, but not all of the new features had an explanation.

I do also miss the the gacha robot who had would give you puzzle pieces. It was cool to try to collect and complete all the puzzles. I also miss Mr Maekawa saying “it’s a race you haven’t won before” for races that you are replaying but haven’t won yet. Just takes an extra step now to see if you’ve won a specific race before.

Overall this is a fantastic and addictive game. I am so glad that Nintendo closing the eShop didn’t kill this game and I hope to see even more creative projects (outside of Pokémon) from Game Freak in the future!
carcusgod,
Addictive but really difficult early game
I don’t have a huge amount of time to play games. Perhaps this game becomes more satisfying once you sink a large amount of time in, breed horses, or whatever the game holds later on, but early on the game does nothing to keep me interested. The races are really hard and it doesn’t seem to matter much what I do; I win a race and lose a race and win a race and lose a race on a repeating cycle. The game gives advice each time you lose. The advice is often to conserve stamina, but that doesn’t seem to ultimately make a difference in the race outcomes. Sometimes the advice is to buy items from the store, although the store is not available every round and you get little to no money (the currency required for store purchases) for failing races. The solitaire mixed with racing is interesting and the game seems like it could maybe be addictive down the line. I just don’t feel incentivized to keep playing to find out.
Jaybee7414x,
Stamina-Energy Balance?
The stamina energy balance if it exists is not well explained. Particularly baffling is the need to press the Unity Power Button to allocate more energy (energy is the number at the top center). If there is no strategy other than to exhaust all the Unity Power and give it to Energy why doesn’t it automatically do so? I’m still not absolutely sure how to get a more difficult solitaire hand to do more energy charging, What is the arrow that springs from Unity Power (bottom left of screen)? I’ve saved screenshots of some of the tips but you really need a dedicated guide to further explain some of the nuances of the game.

Ride On, Again!
Having spent countless hours playing the original PCJ on 3ds, Im sad to see it disappear into the ether. I’m happy that this version exists, in fact I subscribed to Apple Arcade solely to play this game.

I’m not going to spend too much time describing how to play it, because to anyone who hasn’t tried it, it sounds like solitaire and horse racing wouldn't work. And honestly I’m not a fan of horse racing or solitaire otherwise, but this game is so much fun. Just give it a try and might be hooked, just like this game hooked me on 3ds back in 2016

Devs: Please port this to Switch! And please make a physical copy available! I don’t want Ride On to suffer the same fate as the 3ds game when it’s removed from Apple Arcade…
Joshuagranat,
Truly a broken game
I find this game very fun, honestly. I’ve played a sun total of around 25 hours, which is surprising. Sadly, after getting accustomed to Card Jockey’s mechanics, I can confidently say that the game has some gaping holes, to the point where it’s hardly playable. Outside of the obvious attempt to make an organic game, this game is a cash grab. If you are downloading this on Arcade, which are games not permitted to utilize microtransaction, this means there is a gaping hole where you are expected to dump money, but are unable.
By this I mean the game is essentially unplayable as the feasibility of having any kind of winning streak is stunted. The game is deeply flawed at its core, with some matches proving quite literally impossible to win, independent of how well you do in solitaire and strategically (I got an astronomically high energy level on a fully leveled-up horse and was still somehow outgunned by almost every other horse on one match).
Anonymous352,
My favorite GF game, finally on mobile!
I’ve been playing Game Freak’s games ever since I discovered Pokémon Red and Blue as a child.

And despite a deep love of Pokémon, Pocket Card Jockey is, unironically, my favorite GF game of all time.

The gameplay is simple, and fun, with lots of depth to dive into if you want - or you can just play completely mindlessly! Visually, it’s cute as heck, and the dialogue and characters are just OOZING with charm!

And this game is PERFECT for mobile! As much as I loved it on my 3DS, the short, quick games are best-suited to a phone, where you can just play a game when you have a few free minutes, and then set it back down!

I’ve long hopes to see PCJ on mobile, but I always feared it would come with disgusting F2P MTX. But…no! Here it is, in all its glory, with no pressure for added payments - just pure, unadulterated fun!

I love this game, and everyone with an Apple Arcade subscription should give it a play.

The only thing I want is MORE - a sequel, DLC… something! This game is so good, I hope we see more of Pocket Card Jockey in future… one way or another!
Ava Kivley,
I’m addicted, but I hate that my horse has to retire after 3 loses
I’m literally addicted to this game and play it all the time. I like that it’s kind of difficult to win and that it’s realistic that even if they do perfect they might not win. The part that is discouraging for me is when the horses have to be retired after 3 loses. Not even 3 loses in a row just 3 loses in their entire adult career. I would love to see my horses grow up and do more races. My horses win about 50%-75% of the time and I feel like they shouldn’t be retiring. Would love to be able to play with them longer and have them retire when old!
essiecab,
Fun Racing and Breeding
I raised my review to 4 stars after playing a while. There is a definite learning curve, but once I figured things out it is very fun to play. I love the breeding part of it - you can look at the pedigree and race history when breeding, and also factor in a genetic card poker-type hand when breeding as well.

The things I don’t like: the long dialogues between the characters before and after every race, and also the winnings are not very much so it can get tedious trying to move up.

All in all, I enjoy this game and run at least one race a day. Recommended for horse lovers!
