The Battle of Flodden was fought on the 9th of September 1513. This app follows the routes that both Armies used leading to the final encounter at Branxton, a couple of miles from Flodden Edge which gives the battle its name. The English and the Scottish fought for just 4 hours or so but the casualty rate was not seen again until 403 years later on the first day or the Battle of the Somme.
The Flodden tour can easily be completed in one day but it is worth remembering that all travel was done on foot. The distances the soldiers covered are quite remarkable
Pocket Tours is the world’s first battlefield tour app, which is able to use all of the pioneering capability of the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. This pioneering iPhone application brings history to life by using the full suite of functionality available on the Apple mobile platform. It allows users to visit all of the historical sites from the comfort of their armchair whilst hearing from world-renowned historians exactly what happened, who was involved and how history was shaped; It is also possible for those that have the opportunity to visit Northumberland to be guided around whilst listening to the commentary and seeing where historic events took place. The live camera will help to interpret where things took place in relation to each other. The Pocket Tours apps also allow users
to view photographs, hear sound clips and see film footage to further bring the scene to life.
“Imagine walking over the ground that shaped history and having an expert explain the events as they unfolded. The GPS feature guides users from point to point, utilising the knowledge of local historians ensuring that the best vantage points are used – making a tour of the battlefields accessible to anyone, anywhere at any time.
Once downloaded, users don’t need Internet access to use the app. They can just plug in their headphones and immerse themselves in the history. If you can’t get to the battlefield that’s fine – the app is still a fantastic story in its own right.”
