Lit Arch,
New reading software for the ProJo better but still flawed
The new software for reading the Journal is a great improvement over the earlier, quirky and awkward versions. It greatly improves the reading experience and versatility in accessing information and sending it to others.

Unfortunately the amount of errors in how each article is displayed I has been increasing of late! When an article is selected for a closer read, the result on the screen tends to be a mixed up version with some paragraphs missing or whorls sections left out. I’ve even experienced completely different articles displayed. I’m not sure if this is human operator error at the Journal or a software glitch. The Journal should take a closer look at their operation.

Without a functioning soft version of the PROJo I would absolutely cancel my long standing subscription!

Keep up the good work and for gosh sakes, get your act together!
Earlrond,
Revised review: Links don’t work, other major bugs
April 15:

The latest revision has fixed the problems with nonworking links and rendering issues, and the security certificate error is gone. Getting the update to recognize my subscription through Apple was a bit of an ordeal, and required deleting and reloading the app. Swiping and resizing the paper image is still dodgy, and the fuzzy rendering reported in another review still occurs for certain graphical components.

I am changing my rating from one to three stars.

April 3:

There are major problems with the latest version on my iPad*: links don’t work at all; rendering is buggy, with photos and other graphical elements frequently bleeding into text areas, resulting in unreadable text; swiping/resizing pages is dodgy; constant error message at the top regarding an invalid security certificate. (At least I think that’s what it is saying, as the lower part if the text line is cut off. Even the error messages are rendered with errors!)

This update was clearly issued without adequate testing and should not have been released at all, especially during a global crisis. I hope the app is fixed soon. Until then, I will have to read the ProJo on my ancient iPad 2, which is still running the previous version and works fine.

The downward spiral continues. C’mon, Gannett!

ELSworstAPPever,
This is easily the worst app on my iPad
I can’t believe I actually have to pay to use it. It’s a struggle to use. It’s unresponsive at times and slow to respond all the time. Most links don’t work. When you hit the link to go to article on another page, most times it brings you right back to A1. When you hit the arrow to the next page, many times it also brings you back to AI. It’s been like since the release of this version and it’s embarrassing that is is STILL this bad. Does anyone at the journal use the app or even look at it? I may have to cancel my subscription if they can’t fix it. At the moment it appears they don’t even care to try. The old app was great. Maybe a tweak here or there may have made it better, but anything is better than this CRAPP. The only reason this is getting as high as a 1 star is because it won’t allow me to give it 0 strays. This is a media company, you need to do better

Use this app to access other non working GateHouse e-editions
I installed this app as I was having problems with Pueblo Chieftain e-edition app crashing. Both publications are in the GateHouse Media inc. family of newspapers. From this app I can access and read the Pueblo Chieftain e-edition without any issues. I have shared this information with the Pueblo Chieftain suggesting they start using this app. If you are having issues with your Pueblo Chieftain e-edition app closing out, I suggest you install the Providence Journal app as it may solve your problems also.

Paper At My Finger Tips
Love this app, because it gives me the actual paper, just as I would see it if I purchased a hard copy. The app gives me the option to read an article as I would if paper was in my hand, or use the option to click on article and read the whole thing, in one place, without having to continue on another page. It’s easy to navigate and has an option to enlarge an article for easier reading.
Morgan06239,
Enjoying reading ProJo
For the most part, I am enjoying reading the eProJo as part of my morning routine. It’s essentially the same rag I grew up with. Familiar layout. Informative - though I actually get the world and national news from other sources. I read the ProJo because of the local Rhode Island news. It’s the only local paper that covers all of R.I. ( & parts of MA). Loads easily and, since no actual paper, no waste or clutter. My only complaint is that at times pictures/drawings/cartoons load fuzzy and remain so. Very frustrating when I am trying read the commentary.....

Almost Perfect
Thank you for making this an easy to maneuver app!

One thing I used to be able to do, but I’m not sure that I still can, is to. Copy an article and sent it to myself for future reading. Sometimes I just have time to scan the headlines and that feature allows me to catch up with the article and even reminds me to.

Huge Improvement
Historically ProJo has had a horrible online presence, starting with a frustratingly difficult process for maintaining account authorization and access across platforms (phone, tablet, laptop). Now much better, e-edition is very smooth. If only the content were better. The sports page is literally yesterday’s news.
Paulcord,
Great resource
This app not only gives me a professionally prepared edition of the Providence Journal, but it also provides a gateway to e papers from all over the country. It is a very user friendly app , and my paper is waiting for me to enjoy with my first cup of coffee to start my day. Informed citizens are essential to the success of our experiment in representative democracy, and this app ensures that we are informed.
perprov,
Not worth it
I have had this app since the start, years ago. I didn’t realize how expensive it is compared to direct Online edition from the Journal until I had problems with the new version of the online Journal on Wed. I can’t get refunds, I can’t call anyone for info (Journal doesn’t even know I am a subscriber since my account is through app) and Apple isn’t responsible for Apps. I can’t share my paid subscription with my family. And new version won’t let me download paper offline to be emailed to them using iPad as it did before. Waste of money.
