Description

Spaces is a group chat-based platform for queer people to connect over topics they are passionate about, discover new interests, schedule meetups and hang out. At its core, Spaces is built around community-building — fun, engaging, and free-flowing conversations with like-minded, LGBTQ+ people, who are tired of being harassed on other, more heteronormative, social media platforms.

Each Space on the app is a micro-community for a specific slice of the LGBTQ+ community — from gaymers, runners, and drag lovers to queer Star Wars fans and yoga practitioners. Spaces creators become Hosts, who hold the power to bring other queer people together through shared interests, places, and events. Users can readily find and join the communities that matter to them.

But Spaces isn't just about joining pre-existing communities. Rather, the platform is built specifically to empower Spaces Hosts — everyday people turned into super-users by the powerful community tools loaded into the platform. Spaces invites all LGBTQ+ folks to join a fun, lively (and troll-free) environment.

Discoverability
Find an entirely new audience of LGBTQ+ users.
Invite your friends, colleagues, and more to join your Space, easily.

Keeyoh,
Awesome!
I’m loving this app so far. It’s great getting to connect with like minded people. It’s really a breath of fresh air to have a social media space exclusive to the queer community. Admittedly some of the spaces (or groups) are a quiet and without much engagement. But I’ve found some spaces that share my interests and really have a lot of activity and conversation. There are spaces for all kinds of interests and even if there isn’t, it’s easy to create a new one. Additionally, the admin are super friendly and helpful and make it a really user-friendly experience. They’re also prompt to remove trolls and harassing messages/profiles. I’m really excited see this app and community grow.
Disappointed GMU Student,
Sorely needed app needs some work
I don't usually write reviews, but I had a few thoughts I just had to share. I created an account earlier and I'm enjoying my initial forays into the Spaces. I have to say, this has been - so far - one of the better social media experiences I've had.

The only real problems are the number of people actually using the app - which I'm sure will go up in time but is currently leaving a lot of the Spaces near-empty - and certain issues with customization.

For one, I would like the bio page to have a slightly higher max character count (say, 300 or so) so I can put a bit more in it. Also, the lack of a dark mode is a major accessibility concern. I would recommend adding a sepia or nature theme as well, as I've found it to be an excellent middle ground between light and dark. Finally, it would be nice if we could sort Spaces by the number of members when searching (biggest Spaces, smallest, etc.).

Just adding one of these improvements (except the character count) would be reason enough for me to change my review from 3 to 4 stars. You guys are doing great work though. I can't express enough how much the world sorely needs an app like this.
storm_1212,
Enjoying the app
Finally a place where everyone on there is not shallow everyone is very welcoming and it’s just a cool spot and it doesn’t matter if you’re a bear or a Twink if you’re transgendered it doesn’t matter what you label yourself is it a good spot to go and just have a conversation finally you know the LGBTQ plus community is not so welcoming in reality so whoever created this app my head off to you dude I think this is a great idea. Keep up the good work I love it because they’re not judging you for how you look or anything like that,
LightGamer24,
It’s good, but needs some work
I truly do love this app. I just have a few recommendations to make it a little easier to use. In the section that talks about people replying to your or reacting to your messages if there’s anyway to make it so that you know what’s already been checked and what’s new versus going through everything to make sure you didn’t miss anything would be nice. Perhaps just making the reaction/replies you’ve already looked at a little darker, or maybe the news ones have a purple dot by them, just a little indicator of what’s new and what’s not. Other than that I’ve been loving the app, thank you so much for making it!
dustinj1981,
Great App, little ways to go
The app is a wonder place to find and speak with other queer community members that one may not normally have the access to do where they live or may be looking for a safer place to mingle with others. There are many, many spaces within Spaces where you can find others with similar interests. And if you do not find what you are looking for, you have the ability to easily create and host your own space. I highly suggest giving it a try, though still in it’s infancy the spaces team is constantly updating and expanding capabilities and features.
Viewtiful_Justin,
Good Alternative!
I appreciate Spaces because it gives me a space to be myself, join communities based on my interests, and meet and talk with likeminded folks. The iOS functionality is great, and the dev team pays attention to both what is going on with the app and in the app.

I’d recommend this as an alternative to other social media platforms—you won’t have to explain your risqué vacation pics or tell your uncle to get bent because of his awful beliefs on here!
jlleblanc,
The space where everyone knows your name
For a long time now, I’ve been hoping for an LGBTQ+ app where people can socialize with the broader community. Spaces is it! The moderators are very available to help you understand how it all works and find spaces you’ll want to be a part of. If you’re considering leaving Twitter behind and are wondering where you can find LGBTQ+ people to chat with after, this is the space!
10 points for aubree,
Amazing so far
I think it’s amazing, only downside is that its completely platonic which is nice but sometimes people want friends and partners, it’d be cool if a dating section or something was added so anyone can find everything they need in one app. Not everyone likes dating apps which is why it should be a social one for friends, partners, best friends, etc
But I have yet to find a real problem within the app, I highly recommend joining plus there isn’t many bots at least none I’ve encountered so yay!
Prettiest Boy,
A Decent Start
This app is overall enjoyable to use. My main issue is that it’s a bit clunky to try and discover new groups - you can try to manually search using keywords or look at a list of about 10 recommended groups, but nothing else. I’d love to see a more advanced search feature or the ability to dismiss a group being recommended to you so it’s replaced with a different recommended group.
ToastedSyrup,
Decent so far
It’s just like, an lgbtq discord esque style forum. Pretty bare bones at the moment, my only huge issue with the app right now is the notifications. If you don’t mute a chat, your phone will go off every time someone sends a message, which can sometimes be 30-50 notifications piling up bothering you while you can’t turn your phone to do not disturb mode. I’d really like the notifications to be fixed so that they stop from a specific chat once a couple of messages have already notified you.
