Hint:
RealDrums standalone is very fast (very short latency).
If you play along to your iPod then the latency will be increased a little bit - because the iPod consumes some of the iPhone/iPod touch energie - but you still can play in sync with your iPod.
Make sure NOT to use the iPod EQ (system settings), because this will need a lot more power from the CPU - and lead to higher latency. Switch off the Phone, WLan and Bluetooth to get even faster response.
For iPod touch users:
iPod touch (first generation) has no inbuilt speaker, use your headphones. In order to hear the RealDrums sounds activate your system sounds via 'General-Sound Effects' set it to 'both' and turn up the volume 'Settings - Music - Volume Limit'.

I've tried em all ... this one is the best.
I really have tried the other drum apps. This one is the most fun. I love the variable attack. There are several tricks to make it work well: I prefer to play with the iPhone up-side-down so that the kick is on my right side, snare on the left, and toms decend from right to left ... just like a real kit (for right handed players). Per the instructions, it does help to turn the phone to airplane mode to reduce latency. I try to hit every instrument once before playing .. it's almost like the first time you strike each one, it has to call it up from memory, but after that the latency is nil. Set the iPod control on the home button double click. Launch the drums, then double click the home screen to control music. Put on some nice head phones, crank up the volume ... playing on top of tracks is a lot of fun! A previous commenter railed on tuning ... which he obviously prefers a heavily muted drum. Real drums sing.

Ios 8 and the larger iPhone could make this a joy.

Great drum program
I bought 4 drum programs and this is the best one so far. I love the realistic sound and the dynamic play of this drum. The ability to play along with my own iTune music is awesome. The layout is easy to use too. My only wish/suggestion right now is the author could increase the pads size of the toms & the cymbals. I keep missing the cymbals, high tom & low tom, even though my fingers are not fat. ... And maybe add some more drumsets.

Improvement Needed
The only drum that can be hit harder or lighter is the snare, which makes no sense at all and I can't even hear it. In order for me to actually hear the snare I have to hit the very top of it on the screen. The sound quality is not impressive. Also, it's nearly impossible to hit the bass drum. Space the drums out, make it easier to hit the hi hat and make it an option to hit the drums lighter or harder. This definately is not worth $2, and this is one of my least favorite drum apps. Please take my advice and make some changes. This app has great potential.

Best drumming app out there
This is hands down the best drumming app on the app store. My only complaint is that you can't rearrange how the kit is presented.

Satisfying playing experience
I am a drummer. This app is not perfect (no alt. kit selection, smaller playing area for some parts of the kit), but really is the *most satisfying* to play of the drum apps I have purchased. Why?
(1) large playing area for hi-hat, pedal, and snare
(2) *no* noticable lag - it just plays!
(3) play the instrument louder or softer depending on where you tap
Others may offer more features, but this one works! This is the one I play on for fun.
