Description
Running records, developed by Marie M. Clay, are a method for observing and assessing a child’s oral reading. The Record of Reading app is designed to provide an electronic form for taking a running record. The app provides embedded formulas for the accuracy and self-correction rate (no need for a calculator!), but of course, the teacher does all the coding and analysis. Once the running record is complete, it can be saved in a file or emailed. In addition, the app records the student’s voice while the teacher simultaneously takes the record. When replaying the running record, the oral reading and the record are synced. For more information on taking running records, please see "An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement" (Clay, 2005).

Nice idea with current technology
This is certainly a new frontier -- moving what Marie Clay designed to be done on a blank piece if paper to our latest technologies. Thank you, folks at Clemson, for your tech work to make this happen. Time will tell us how we use this. I can see how the playback feature may be useful for reading recovery teacher leaders in their training classes and coaching sessions.
My only complaint is that the interface with my "typical" stylus is fairly imprecise. Hard to write miscues and indicate self corrections and repeats with the equivalent of a crayon. I will try again with a better stylus -- I'm looking at the jot pro and bamboo as options.

Need some improvements
I don't think this app is user friendly. It has great potential with a few changes. Landscape view is a great start.

Needs an update for Dropbox
I can't save anything because Dropbox changed and this app doesn't support it.

Great app but needs a fix
I started using this app about a month ago. I think all the functions are great, calculating accuracy, WPM, recording the student, etc. I take pictures of the text beforehand so I can check off the text while listening to them read. Also they love listening to themselves reading. This could help with their fluency as well. Right now, I am having trouble emailing the PDF so that I can print it out. The app freezes and then shuts down on me. I really need this resolved because I have to print out the records for my student folders.

Great app
I love using it, it is simple and straight forward. The only question I have is how come the accuracy rate does not always reflect the number of errors? I am not using it for English learners so I can't put information such as the level of the text and maybe that has something to do with it, but I don't see how. I do put in the number and types of errors but for some reason even for students who struggle and make up to 10 errors reading a texts which consists out of 60 words the accuracy rate remains around 90%. Is this a glitch?

Guided reading
I love using this to perform my running records for guided reading. It is nice that you can save and email them. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because when I save it, it doesn't save their accuracy rate. When I open the record back up it always shows 100% accuracy independent even though errors are marked. I am having to write down the information because it wont be there when I go back later. If this problem could be fixed, this app will be a huge help in a teacher's life!

Plus - It is surprising easy to use once you have played with it a bit. I was concerned about the use of the stylus but it is becoming easier. I am excited about the new version which adds the voice component. My wish is that when emailed to myself the picture would show all of the information on the screen. For some reason it only shows about 3/4 of each screen and does not send the top information.

Amazing App...but a few minor issues
This is an amazing app. I have used it several times now to do running records and it captures everything you need. It's easy to email the records as pdf or picture file. I CANNOT SAVE THE FILE, however. I can create new folders but when I click on "save"nothing happens. I have emailed to myself but it would be SO much better to be able to save the file on the ipad.
