Chonnie Burlix,
Great Resource, But …
ReaearchGate is a great app and as an academic, used weekly for communications around the world with colleagues. The best feature is making grey literature such as high quality technical reports available to readers in Eastern Europe, Asia, Oceana, S. America, and Africa who may not have resources to obtain such material— the sharing power for scholars is impressive. The weakness of the app is the failure to recognize the many categories of professions and disciplines found in academia. It reflects a small minded, uncaring attitude towards the diversity of majors, departments, and schools within academia. 🙃
livinsales,
Design UI unusable on iPhone X and newer phones
Update 26Feb2019: Well, clearly condone at RG is listening to concerns about UI mad functionality. In the PSY month they have issued half dozen or more updates. Works fine now on iPhone XS. Still some glitches in interface and limitations on functionality vs online version. But a huge improvement.

Original Review: The app seems to have nice features but because the graphical UI is poorly done on newer iPhones (unclear its actually coded for them, but if so they need a new coder). The result is that the interface elements such as drop down and back arrow are overlapping with system elements like time, location services, network and battery life. As a result, it’s nearly impossible to get those app buttons to register. It also looks poorly on these screens because both the top and bottom of the app are clearly not optimized to fit the screens well. It’s just off. I emailed them several months ago but no fix has occurred. Given it’s nearly u useable hard to give much over one star. I wouldn’t criticize for lack of compatibility with bleeding edge iPhone that was released, say, a week prior. But this screen configuration is over 16 months old and on Apple’s FOUR most recent models.
Positive CEO,
Plenty of Unavailable Articles to Read
I have been using ResearchGate for over a year but have been deeply disappointed in it lately. My recent search for articles has come up fruitless. I found 20+ articles which may have had information pertinent to my research, but most of these were available by request only. So I pressed the “request to read full article” button, but it’s been over a week and I have had only one response from an author who stated “he didn’t have access to his paper anymore”. Now; I’m not giving a low rating because of his response, I’m giving a low rating for the lack of response from the other 20+ requests.

I just wonder what value this app has if most of its articles are available upon request, and most of these requests are not responded too?

I recommend ResearchGate makes providing the full article mandatory when posting on their site because otherwise their site is useless. I mean as a scientist, why would you post to have written a paper without posting the paper itself. That’s not the name of the game here.
Gabs Palomo,
Great app for researchers. However...
ResearchGate finally has an app! I love this! It’s very convenient to see new articles from the scientist I follow. I particularly like the easy access to my messages with its own tab. I also like that I cam easily access the research items I follow by tapping the tab on the upper right corner. Also very convenient to see my profile and stats. I can download papers and upload them to Drive or Dropbox.

HOWEVER, I would like to be able to search articles not just researchers using the search bar on top. Another feature that I’d like to have access to is the questions. It doesn’t seem to have a tab or a way to access them through the app. Being able to ask and answer questions on the go using the app would be great.

Looking forward to more updates and will continue to use it.
zeropointblank,
Nice idea, poor execution
I would like to use this product, but seldom do. First, there is no simple way to upload peer-reviewed publications or easily see which ones have been uploaded. My account remains woefully incomplete with no simple way to update it. I don’t have time to do this manually. It should be able to track my publications automatically, if I’ve authorised it, and include them in my bibliography. The app does not appear to facilitate finding my publications in anyway, let alone conference presentations etc and instructions on the website are absent. Second, there is no iPad app. The web page remains the most robust interface, but provides little guidance on how to use it, let alone link it to other accounts, like LinkedIn. Research related discussions are a great idea, however few of my colleagues appear to use this on a regular basis. If some of these limitations were addressed, it might facilitate uptake.
AZ_Doc,
iPadOS version
I understand that ResearchGate is not a technology company per se. I think the site does a fantastic job bringing the research community together as a social networking web site.

Regarding its access on electronic devices the app designed for the iPhone is very good, but porting it over to the iPad tablet form factor is less than ideal compared to using a browser given that most use these tablets in landscape mode.

Since most major web sites now provide apps that meet both the phone and tablet form factors, I would suggest that ResearchGate contact Apple for assistance in creating their app also for the iPadOS form factor to make it more user friendly to the size of the screen but still provide the same useful functions like notifications.

Otherwise, the options become use the small iPhone app form factor on the iPad for notifications and a browser to access the web site if one feels the app screen size is too small.

Thanks
Dr Nanette,
Career networking
As a physician scientist, it’s been great to have flexibility when sharing preliminary findings, follow and learn from research that is helping a broad community, and incorporate insights from scientists and healthcare professionals. As a whistleblower, I was able to connect with professionals outside my field and rebuild a network in solidarity with others who want to also fix the American healthcare system. In summary, ReasearchGate helps professionals build a career and for me, rebuild a career after race based hate retaliation knocked me down.
frannyval,
Needs improvement
I really like that I can do research and read scientific articles with ease on my smart phone, but the search feature in the app needs improvement. There is no way to filter results. Even something as simple as “most recent” for a filter would help find articles. Would love to see this app expand and grow to a more functional platform. Hopefully they can make some more improvements.

Also, it would be nice to simply “bookmark” an article instead of “following” it.
Yianni2017,
No iPad Optimization? It’s 2019.
As a scientist, I often use research gate’s online platform to troubleshoot issues with my protocols. Many scientists these days use iPads for work. Not their phones. So not having this app optimized for larger displays is pretty disappointing. Please develop a version of this app that supports and takes advantage of the larger display. Especially with iPad OS around the corner. If inspiration is lacking, see how Slack does it. I’m giving 2 stars just for having the app in the first place. Will update upon seeing improvement
Chejux,
Why is an app for academics so bad?
As an academic I have come to value the Research Gate (RG) platform - while using my computer at work. Consequently, I’m at a complete loss for words to describe how disappointed I was while using this app on my iPad. The experience was so bad I, the app was forgotten until this morning, and I can’t bring myself to use it anymore. How can the people associated with RG be involved with something this bad? You literally have access to an amazing pool of talent at your fingertips. My colleagues and I, along with my students, use tablets everyday. For the love of all things digital, please update and improve this app.
