Description

All your RockHounding needs in one App separated in 4 easy to use sections. Features a large database of over 160 sites and over 60 rocks and gems with full screen pictures. Add your own sites to personalize the App or include your own finds. No Ads or In-App Purchases!

SITES - With over 160 sites, you can choose a site with the Map that also shows your location, or with the List which is separated by State. Each site has a description of the area and what you may find there. You can even add your own sites by plotting the GPS coordinates on the map. RockHound was not intended to be a complete guide to every site, they are mostly in the US. The power is in being able to add your own sites anywhere in the world.

ROCKS - Over 60 different rocks, minerals and gems with descriptions and pictures of each. This is not meant to be a complete list of all rocks and gems, but more of a starting point for you to add the ones that you find and personalized descriptions and photos of them.

TIPS - General tips about RockHounding, Tools needed, Rock Tumblers. There are also program tips to get the most out of RockHound!

FAVORITES - You have the option to select sites as Favorite Sites. The Favorite Sites can have pictures attached to them that you import from your Photo Library or take with the Camera. That way you can keep track of what you find at each site. The power of Rockhound is in this section where you have complete control of the descriptions and pictures of any Site that you mark as a Favorite.

Complete update using the latest technologies. Pressing on the location of a site brings up Maps for getting directions or full screen viewing. Pressing the return button on top takes you right back where you left off in Rockhound. Photos are now managed with the standard Photo Library for easier organization and smaller app size. Marking a site as a Favorite now lets you make changes to it without affecting the original. This makes it easy to update the location to your last dig or include other minerals you may have found.

HeyitsmeAlyssa,
Don’t do it
No information AT ALL
Law-Penrose,
Worst app ever
I should have read more reviews...this app is definitely not worth the $1.99 I shelled out for it.
There are only 2 pictures per mineral/specimen and it is missing some pretty common ones, where is garnet?
Not only that, but it looks like the app has been out for quite a few years (more than 5) and there is such scant to no information about sites in the Midwest and other various parts of the country that the location feature (which is what supposedly makes the app worth $1.99) is virtually useless.
So, sitting at the park today with my son, excited to identify his gems and minerals he panned for at a cave site in Missouri, was a bust. There weren't enough pictures to compare our actual stones to for a positive identification and there were no sites in Missouri listed to lend any clue or helping hand. I already deleted this waste of space and want my money back!!

Missing critical info and ability
Since this app is been around for so long, I thought there would be a lot more sites. It also does not take advantage of GPS to be able to add in your current location as a potential site. Could be a fantastic app, if they took the time to actually add in an offsite to make the purchase worth it. You can't search by what you want to find, so there is no way to really make use of the sites that are there.

Very Good app
I initially purchased Rocks & Gems for for my son's iPod Touch, and he liked it so much that I also got RockHound. I - naturally - failed to read the requirements section, which of course notes that it is only for iPone. No worries though, I will just keep this one for me on my iPone. Overall, this is a very good app for anyone interested in rock, gem or mineral collection - so please ignore my earlier review.
ebola1,
Poor excuse for an app
This app lacks all the things others have said about it but I want to add different problems. When looking at individual minerals, the list of minerals blocks the description, at least 4 lines of info. They want others to add to their meager work and they want to release updates, profiting from our efforts. I guess they had better have people cite their sources as there is such a thing called plagiarism....I think I will learn how to make apps to get something of value.
Washor,
No New England Love
Absolutely zero sites in all of New England (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine). That is disappointing. The photos probably come from the public domain, but the developers should do some better searching for higher res photos. Also, much more mineral specimens and information would be nice. The photos don't look sharp at all on the iPad.

Great app! Worth paying for!!
This is a great app for all us rock hound and adventurous spirits. Easy to use and you can add your own locations and submit them for sharing with everyone. Rock, Gem, Mineral, Fossil collectors should all have this one.
Funkydivachic,
This is alright
It's a good beginning for introduction to rocks and semi precious gems. I wish it had a version that was specific to the iPad (fitting the screen size without distortion) Also it would be nice to have a reference to the metaphysical properties and mythology aspect of rocks and gems. Great job to those that started this! I'll be adding to it :-)
Charger875,
Lacks information
Truly a poor example of a rock encyclopedia. This app could be improved easily by adding diagnostic characteristics of each of the minerals (hardness, streak, cleavage, luster). Instead, a select few minerals are listed, with a paragraph description.

If you are looking for something to study from, this is NOT your app.
ShortyPunk7,
Awesome!!!!!
This is a great app that allows me to keep all my secret spots on a database. You can always add new stones and sites to the ones that are already included. All in all, this app is wonderful!!!!!
