Description

Using Saagara, you can feel good that the any personal care product you use is safe for you and the ocean life including the coral reefs and other marine creatures. It's easy-to-use – just scan the ingredients on the container, or a picture of it on the web if you plan to order online, and Saagara will recommend whether or not to use it. It's free!

It checks the ingredients for harmful chemicals and micro plastics against several certified sources to check if all the ingredients in your product are safe for you and the environment too. It lists out the list of harmful chemicals, if any, along with the recommendation.

After each scan, it also displays, as part of the results, an interesting image conveying a fact about the preservation of the environment, or eco-friendly brands, or information about harmful chemicals, and so on. These images are designed with custom made messages and graphics and are stored in and retrieved from a web server, and displayed in the app. They change for each scan, and attempt to both educate the user and preserve user engagement. If the user selects a product with no harmful ingredients, it applauds their decision and titles the educational image with "Thank you for protecting the Earth". If the product contains harmful ingredients, it titles the image as " Food for Thought" and attempts to inspire the user to selecting a different product.

The constantly changing environment tit-bits make the app novel in every use and educational.

1. Performance improvements have been made to the app

3. Included an example of this in the 6.5" phone display screen shots above

The Saagara new 2.0 version is almost a complete re-write of the original app and every feature and screen is revamped and new. The name and subtitle have also been edited to reflect the same.

The new features include:
1) Sunscreens have been replaced with support for any personal care product.
2) Bar code scanning has been replaced with ingredients scanning, and works seamlessly in real-time for various products. It is not dependent on maintaining or updating any database of bar codes, which is a big advantage.
3) The opening screen has been replaced with a new one showing various personal care products
4) The list of harmful ingredients has been expanded to include various kinds of micro plastics as well - which are a major contributor to environmental pollution and human health safety.
5) The NOAA map has been replaced with dynamic, changing with each scan, environmental awareness information images which aims at both improved user awareness and engagement.

Added a new button in the scan view, below the scan button, called "View Some Recommended Sunscreens"
Clicking this displays 5 recommendations. These recommendations are randomly picked by the app from the list of approved sunscreens in its database, and keep changing. This way the user has a lot of choices on safe recommendations, and doesn't see the same list each time.
1) Adding this feature is very useful, as if a user ends up scanning multiple sunscreens that are not safe, they may want to know some recommendations on what are some safe sunscreens.
2) It is also useful when a user scans a sunscreen that is not yet in the app's database, and might be looking for some recommendations.
3) And it is also useful even if a user finds a sunscreen that is safe, but is interested in knowing some other options too.

Two minor changes:
1) When a sunscreen is not found when scanned, the text now reads "This sunscreen (barcode #) information is currently not available, but will be added soon. Please try another brand."
Loaded screenshot for this.
In the past, a suggestion was made to look for non-nano particle sunscreens and that was deemed confusing. Thus the change towards simplicity.

2) When a sunscreen is considered safe, the harmful ingredients now reads "None."
Loaded the screenshot for this.
In the past, this asked to ensure the ingredients were all non-nano particle, and that was deemed confusing. Thus the change towards simplicity.

MíaK,
Really Helpful and Innovative!!
This is a really cool and helpful app!! When shopping for sunscreen we usually only pay attention to if the product is good for our skin and often overlook the effects the product can have on the environment.
The app is really straightforward and easy to use and I really love how apart from telling us if the sunscreen is good or bad for the earth, also shows us a map of where its effects can be found!
Also really like the “recommend sunscreen” button in case users don’t really know where to start when buying sunscreen.
Saagara is a great app and can help us look out for the integrity of our planet within the scope of our daily actions.
sayyagari,
Practical and educational
As an environmental engineer, I am always looking for ways to align my personal and professional choices with my values to promote sustainability of natural and human built ecosystems. I appreciate both the educational and practical value of this app. It makes the connection between something as simple as sunscreen to coral reef population health in a clear and striking way. The next time I buy sunscreen I will be sure to think more about the decision and will use this tool to make informed choices.

Excited to use the app
I’ve been trying to find more clean skincare products. Sunscreen has always been challenging to pick out! So happy that I can quickly scan my sunscreen before buying it to make sure it’s eco friendly!
