I met my husband on Salaam around the last week of Ramadan of 2020, May. I remember being so mindful of Laylatul Qudr night and praying to Allah to guide me and I kid you not, I had the feeling it was time to go on the app. That week I started speaking to my husband. Because of COVID and the beginning stages of the city lockdown, we spoke for weeks until towards the end of June of 2020 we decided to meet in the only dine in restaurant at the time, which was the park lol. We continued speaking, in July we met one more time. By August we were engaged and my October 10, 2020 we were married.
It was not an easy experience, but using the app was very straight forward. I liked the ability to have the various filters to make the process less chaotic or confusing when coming across various people. I believe there was a blurring of my image option which is a nice plus for females. Now yes the app was the vehicle that helped me find my husband, but those looking for a spouse make sure you keep Allah as your guide and not lose sight of Him, if you want to find your his or her.

Need new filters!
Although I liked new features such as personality types, it would helpful to be able to filter by personality type and other things such as love languages or even if they are gold/platinum/etc. members. For some people who take personality types, we have an idea of who we might me compatible with and could be a good place to start. It’s good to have in mind when going through profiles and have more nuanced filters that can inshallah help us find a spouse. If we already paying, I would like to narrow down my pool by people that might be more compatible! Also please consider a ranking feature (for self) where we can sort through matches and profiles to help us categorize profiles we like and interested in. Having a long list of swipes makes it hard to figure out what we would like and potential people we would like to match with. I feel like the telegram feature doesn’t really work and I would like to find/match with people who are also active and actively looking for someone. This is why I mostly swipe on other people who are also playing for gold/platinum/etc. since it shows there more likely to be on the app. Overall, I know there’s people who are serious about marriage and people always saying they can’t seem to find serious/active people, so a feature where we can connect with others who are more active would be helpful, especially since we’re paying a lot to have more features!!!

First Impressions
Day one of using the app I’ve noticed it’s super glitchy. Took me quite a few attempts to write my profile because it wouldn’t save at times and sometimes just freeze up. Other times I would finish typing several paragraphs saving it and going back to find nothing was ever saved. So after finishing up my profile finally I went in to the search option to find some potential matches. It’s got the industry standard swipe left/heart or heart react vs X. So you can only filter your search for free based on age, distance or faith sect. All the other filters are a premium option. So once someone likes your profile, you can’t see who they are until you upgrade to a premium option. At least some of the other apps only charge for certain things like messaging after you receive several free messages. I’m not against paying for a good service but for the love of god give me something to work with. 1: glitchy app 2: not many filters offered for free 3: can’t see who wants to chat with you. All in an all I’m not impressed with the app and not sold to upgrade. Hopefully the developers for this app can take a long hard look at their model because I honestly wanted to like this app at first. Also some of the question choices for the profile are super lame like what do you think of pineapple on pizza? My pandemic hobby? Like come on guys get with the times the pandemic is over.

Most profiles seem either fake or people are not serious.
Let’s be honest here, where there is a social media/dating apps, there will always be room for spam or fake accounts, these apps seem to be a bit more than other social media apps. Perhaps the app developers are trying to make it look like millions of people use it every day and that probably is not the case. I’ve used this app for many years now and many accounts has always seemed a bit weird looking, not the pictures, I’m talking about how some of the accounts/profiles are structured or created. Most seem like they’re either fake, or most people who use it are either not seriously interested in getting married and trying to just spend time here when they’re bored, or they’re just promoting their Instagram or Snapchat accounts, now days could be promoting their TikTok accounts. The free version of the app gives you about 90-95% LESS features than the paid version, which means you definitely have to pay to even be in the game, NOT WORTH PAYING MONEY!! I would not waste a single dime on these apps, but it’s up to you to decide that.
Also, there’s very little Islamic values/deen priorities going on here, so if you are looking for someone into Islam and Deen, you are better off relying on your mom arranging an arrange marriage for you !!

Give it a shot!
I have only been on the app for three days and I cannot tell you how many genuinely wonderful people I’ve met. Don’t let reviews scare you. That being said, keep your eyes peeled for “red flags”. I recommend sending voice memos and trying to FaceTime early on so you know if there’s chemistry, camaraderie, effortless conversation, etc. Gold membership is worth trying so you can see people who have liked you, in case you haven’t come across their profile yet! A red flag to look out for is those who may not have a transparent profile indicating their work or social habits. The reluctance could be their fear of being judged and that’s okay. We’re all human. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to see if your values align. A lot of people are on here with intention. Inevitably you’ll run into people you just don’t vibe with, but that also happens in the physical world. Praying we all find our soulmate. Good luck angels 🤍

Large amount of Pakistani/Somali communities but many other representations from all over the world. Beware of generational prejudice despite attraction /connection & difficult conversations. It’s alright
This app is alright. There is some decent people on here and I’ve gotten to go on dates with a lot of cool people. My biggest complaint and this can be spoken on both the men and women on here. It’s hard to find anyone on here who is even remotely serious about a long term relationship. I finally met someone who is cool and we’ve been going out for a couple months now inshallah it goes well. Before that, a lot of people just don’t put in the effort to want to get to know you.
I feel like a lot of people on here are just bored, looking for a sugar daddy, or just got out of a relationship and haven’t took the time to self reflect. I can’t tell you how many dates I’ve gone on for them they just got out of a relationship. App could be better as well. A lot of bots, it’s gotten expensive, and a lot of inactive profiles. I think they should enable a system that gets rid of profiles who haven’t been active in two weeks or more. It’s annoying to sit there and like someone’s profile to not even know the last time they’ve even been on that app. Better than most other apps but has gone downhill over the years.

Honest opinion
I have been on this app on and off now for a year and honestly I can say I have experienced the most disrepesct from men on this app than I have in real life. I get judged based on my Islamic sect even when the guys have their chosen Islam flavor as “any muslim” which makes no sense. I got called “a fake religious sunni” when his profile said “any flavor” I have written reviews before on other men that I have added on offline platforms through the app. I have realized that even when you write a review or send in a report they do not update you this app is honestly 50% creepers looking for a “good time” & the other 50% are guys judging off your profile. I have been a premium member through this amount of time and I have had worst experiences when it comes to finding someone serious even the guys that I report for Inappropriate offline behavior which includes sending nudes and such disrepectful habits still manage to be on Minder. I feel like they do not take our reports seriously because the guy’s profiles are still up when some of my friends use minder. They do not take it seriously and this is my honest opinion after using it for almost 10 months.

Needs improvement or some type of makeover
I’m giving this app 2 stars because I feel somewhat bad people who created this app probably had good intentions and were willing to make the effort to help Muslims find significant others in an increasing digital world. That being said, I haven’t found this app to be a positive experience and while some part of it is outside of the apps’ control (unenthusiastic men) I feel like too many features are unnecessarily on premium. When your free introduction is men who make it so clear they could care less about you, than what willingness would one have to pay for something as mundane as seeing who likes you. I get that the creators need dough but I think scaling back a little to make some features free would be nice because some of us would rather give up and enjoy single life than pay when we feel certain we’d get crickets as responses. Also the subway ads are a tad bit cringe, I think there needs to be more creativity in that respect or less public embarrassment. Two stars for trying and good intentions, three off for needed improvement in execution.

Unsafe and Unfair
They do not take sexual harassment (or anti-black racism)on the app seriously and continue to let perverts and dangerous people use their app despite constant reporting. Also, I was off the app for a month traveling and got back to my account being rejected because of someone who endorsed me as ‘ghosting’. I have never ghosted someone. If some man is giving very little effort in the conversation or making me feel unsafe, I will not respond right away. To punish a woman for that is so ridiculous. They rejected me account because Of it. I just went ahead and deleted and will never use this again. Also, as a black woman, the majority of men were incredibly racist and degrading to me once they find out I’m black (I pass for non black). Instead of penalizing women’s autonomy of choosing who to respond to, they should take issues of racism and sexual harassment more seriously as that is a more real threat to mental health as well as physical health than ‘ghosting’. The app really thought they had something with that feature but it’s only backwards and seeks to reaffirm the vulnerable positionality women are often in in these sorts of relationships
