Colonization, The newest strategy game from Sid Meier continues the great tradition of Civilization.

—User Reviews—
“The game is a rich and varied Gestalt of top colony activity. Strategies must be divined with care, and constantly modified to ride the chaotic rapids of the thousands of interactive elements in this opus of creative genius. Perhaps. Or it could just be a damn fine game.”

“Colonization offers hours and hours of entertainment. I played it for over a week to write this review and it commanded my total concentration all the time to play it once through. Because the game can be very different every time you play it, this means that Colonization is the sort of game you could play for ever.”

FEATURES
• Manage your growth, development and trade to create a powerful nation.
• Pit your strategic skills against Colonization's advanced artificial intelligence.

rtb1989,
So close and yet so far
This is so close to being so good. As it is it’s literally a direct port, with your fingers moving the cursor and a tap being a click. But all iOS intuition goes wrong when you tap what you want to click, and end up in completely the wrong part of the map, because the “cursor” was on the minimal.

I wanted so badly to like this. I loved this game when I was a kid, and Mac OS Catalina killed the ported version I had on my laptop… but this is genuinely unplayable. No ability to move diagonally (unless I’m missing something) and while I’m sure I could get used to switching between the “mouse” interface and the keyboard, it’s overwhelmingly annoying.
Sukiekeen,
A Great Game -Love it!
I will admit that it takes awhile to figure out and get use to the controls but it is 100% worth it - I am totally addicted AGAIN I remember playing this when I was a kid. They don’t really make a lot games like this anymore it is complicated you have to think and contemplate so many different variables. The game plays out slowly over time instead of bam bam bam, which is a nice contrast to the contemporary games I love. I really love it and am so glad someone adapted it to phone/iPad. I would love the controls to be a little easier but you do get the hang of it after awhile and I almost like the throw back nature of those too. I wish there were an easier way to keep track of things and jump from colony to colony. There might be I seem to discover new tricks all the time. So don’t give up on it bc the controls are complicated and frustrating push through -look up control short cuts online. If you played this way back in “the olden days”you won’t be disappointed just impressed with what a great it always was and still remains.
Makamlar,
Love it
This is the same Sid Meier's classic that I enjoyed playing in my childhood in 94.

The music is the same but of a lower quality , and the buttons get a while to get to know which is why most people here gave the game negative review due to frustration.

The game should come with a page of instructions on how to use the new controls on iPhone. It's very playable once you know what you should be doing.

to load /unload cargo ,select the cargo with your finger then select the keyboard and use + or - .

To move across terrain just press on the square you want to move to and hold it then release.

To check a square click on the brown board on the right side of the screen until a flashing square appears, then touch on a terrain then press f1 for info on the terrain, but don't click on a city directly with the flashing square that'll take you into the city. Instead click on a terrain next to the city then choose the keyboard and move the square with the arrows to the city , then select A to get a list of the units that you want to activate that are stacked in the city.

Hope this helps . Enjoy the game it's lovely and addicting and the best way to pass time during long flights.
Tryng2findNameNotTaken,
Cannot move diagonally, but besides that it’s ok
You can bring up the on-screen keyboard to perform short cuts like in the OG (like M to move, B to build, F to fortify), but there’s no way to move diagonally (OG you could use the number pad, but the on screen keyboard doesn’t have a number pad and the numbers at the top of the keyboard aren’t mapped to movement).

Accessing the menus in game is also a bit frustrating. You can’t select a tile on the map and easily see what resources it produces via the menu/encyclopedia/colonopedia).
StevenCrawford,
I love this deeply problematic game
I played this in middle school. I rediscovered it a few months ago and have played way too much of it. But I also discovered that it is deeply problematic and now I feel guilty for playing it. This is a game in which you establish missions to win Indian converts that are only able to do physical labor. Dang. Play this because it is fun and addictive, but spend some time meditating on the plight of Native Americans in this country and maybe think about doing something to help right this historic wrong.
jma01,
Playable but controls leave much to desire
This review rates the work of the app makers since this is a verbatim port from the 1990s PC game. As others noted, mouse control is very basic and many in-game operations are quite awkward compared to the original PC version. A Colonization newbie would have hard time figuring them out. What could be easy to do for developers, is to add at least support for a Bluetooth keyboard, would have made a difference for me. So I give three stars for good intentions and one extra as the app is priced very reasonably.
Andrewgw54,
Extremely hard to use
I loved this game as a kid and play FreeCol, the open source clone, on my computer. However, this game is near impossible to play. You have to move your finger to the fake mouse then use that to do anything, it’s totally unclear and difficult. You can’t just click on something and it reacts like you’d expect an app to do. The mouse is really hard to use and bizarre: why even have it? I spent about five frustrating minutes trying to move my ship four spaces and another five to move a guy ashore. It stinks. Very disappointed. This game should be taken off the App Store, it’s a rip off and doesn’t work.
Crimsondie,
I’m all about it!!!
This game is one of my favorites from back in the day. I see all the negative reviews and I’m my opinion they just don’t want to embrace the keyboard. When I played the original it was all about using the keyboard, mice were new at the time. It would be nice to be able to increase the transparency of the keyboard though. Everything else is perfect.
TeamBubblegum,
Same as the origional
This game is great, the playability though makes it difficult due the touch mouse. Would be great if i had a bluetooth mouse to connect. This is the DOS version of the game set to run in iOS, which is what i wished civilization was. It is a very long game and would recommend reading a guide online. Also you can find quick commands for the keyboard so you do not need to use the mouse so often. You must use the popup keyboard to control movements and use the hotkey commands.
Settlers: p=plow/clear land, r=build road
B=build colony
In europe or in colony w/boat: l=load cargo, shift+l=load cargo w/choice of how much cargo to load.
If you go to the internet and review the hotkeys used on the pc version you can play this game much more easily.
Touch/slide mouse control and holding mouse acts as a click.
Seabas1221223,
It’s exactly the old pc game
So yeah controls (specially moving) can be a nuisance. That being said you need to use all the short cut keys won the keyboard provided to make it more streamlined.

How to load unload stuff from ship to port or port to ship. Hover over the crate space and click “u” for unload or “L” to load items into it.

It could use improvement in the moving, maybe an option that doesn’t require you to use the mouse, i mean come on developers it’s an app, i appreciate it being just like old one but there’s room for improvement given the new format.

I used to play this game so it’s nostalgia for me, a new player may not enjoy it as much or would have a more difficult time figuring out the controls
