Description

*Skylight is a service that requires a paid subscription to show you forecasts*

Do you ever wish you could know when those magical, gorgeous sunsets happen?

Skylight is the new app from the Apple Design Award winning team of friends behind Halide Camera and Spectre that magically predicts what the quality of light in your evening will be.

Skylight not only tells you when important events like golden hour and sunset happen, but does something magical: with the help of lots of weather and environmental data, machine learning and a pinch of magic, the app gives you a brief forecast. Is it going to be a clear, great golden hour and spectacular sunset, with a scarlet lingering afterglow, or a dim and cloudy glow on the horizon? Checking the app or widget will help you get out the door when you are chasing the light.

POWERFUL PREDICTIONS

The Skylight prediction model uses many atmospheric factors near your location to make a prediction about golden hour, sunset and afterglow. Golden hour is the period of time directly before sunset, when the light is at its most beautiful. The sunset period, when the sun starts touching the horizon, is a stunning daily moment when colors can be at their most dramatic. Finally, the afterglow of a sunset is the period of time when the sun’s light can still color the sky and clouds in beautiful, vibrant colors.

Weather forecasts only tell you if you are likely to see clouds, or low visibility. With a quick, scannable forecast and extra information about conditions, Skylight takes out the guesswork when it comes to the most beautiful light of the day. Whether you are trying to plan a photoshoot or simply love beautiful sunsets, Skylight can be a fantastic utility to check every afternoon.

GORGEOUS DESIGN

Skylight is made by Lux, a group of three friends with a passion for making gorgeous, innovative apps. We previously brought you Halide Camera, the Apple Design Award winning camera app for iPhone and iPad, and Spectre, the iPhone App of the Year of 2019.

Skylight builds on our tradition of making thoughtfully crafted, beautiful products. The app’s colors and iconography changes with the quality of light, and every feature and screen was designed with care.

HANDY TOOLS

Use the beauitful, quick app as it is or place one of Skylight’s widgets on your home screen to stay informed about the light near you.

FROM YOUR TINY TEAM

We truly love making apps — it’s truly our dream to create something like Skylight, and we hope you love it. If you like the app and the work we put into it, we’d love to hear from you with a review or rating, or a message! Thanks for your support — we couldn’t do this without you.

COMPATIBILITY

Skylight is available on iOS 15 and above, for iPhone 6S and 6S Plus and newer devices.

PRIVACY AND LOCATION

Skylight needs Location Services to create forecasts for your local light. Skylight uses background location services by default for constantly updating forecasts and to update your local forecast requiring you to repeatedly open the app. Just a note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Almost Perfect
This is a few updates away from being perfect and knowing the team behind it. It will get there. This is exactly what I need as a photographer to identify the conditions coming up in the day. It’s been more and more accurate now that it’s left beta.

Would add a few features such as, a look at the projected conditions for the next day or even the week if possible. Widget sometimes acts up on me but I’ll give that some time this app is fresh out the box! And some custom features like the app icon, and customizable widgets/notifications.

Skylight is a diamond in a sea of glass
I was lucky enough to get to beta test this app in development and wow, it's absolutely beautifully designed! It does its job well and is a joy to use in the process.

I’ve tried similar apps and always felt like user experience was an afterthought - I might as well have been opening a spreadsheet of precalculated sunset times. With Skylight though, it's clear that team at Lux put care and consideration into creating something that not only works well, but that people want to use!

5 stars all around, what a great experience!
Kidcuisine,
UI is absolute eye candy! 🍬
Love the concept and the execution. Intuitive interactions almost feel expected from this studio, and I couldn’t be happier.

The only 2 things I have a “problem” with so far are the fact that no matter how long I keep the app open for, or restart my device, it continuously tells me it’s ‘STARTING UP’. Which… is a little odd. Also, today hasn’t finished yet, and it’s only giving me tomorrows’s forecast, and not the current.

Also, the app icon isn’t the best. I mean, I wish it just matched that of the UI a little more. Like Halide’s.

I know it’s early access, but I heard you guys like feedback, so that’s mine. I’m sure when it’s all polished up, it’ll be great.

Happy Golden Hour! 🌅

Best Sunsets Ever!!!
I love this app!

As an amateur photographer and outdoor enthusiast this app helps me take better photos and motivates me to take more scenic walks.

No more guessing when golden hour will be, or missing amazing sunsets. With widgets and notifications on my lock and home screens I can plan my evening dog walks around golden hour, sunset, and afterglow.

Knowing there will be a great sunset after a long day motivates me to plan more scenic walks when Skylight forecasts a great (or better) sunset. I can’t believe how accurate the sunset and afterglow forecasting are!

I used the Beta of this app for a few months, and caught dozens of beautiful sunsets I otherwise would have missed.

Thanks Lux for creating an elegant and intuitive app that enhances my photos, motivates me to get outside, and provides me with more mindful moments to enjoy on my own or with loved ones!

Awesome App
I really love this app. I like that this app not only tells you the forecast of the sunset, but also how good the vibrancy will be and what kind of colors you can expect. I feel like most sunset prediction apps in the App Store do not tell you this much information as Skylight does. I would like for you to add sunrise forecasts, because I get curious if it will be a good sunrise as well.

Really Good
Although I hate the subscription, the 10 dollars a year is reasonable and I signed up. This app is the best sunset tracker out there right now, and surely has the best visual design. It’s always great when the devs are responsive to feedback. Only thing I don’t like is the app icon, but surely another hit from the Lux team.

Fine but wishing for a lifetime license
Honestly it’s a good app with a great UI. Well considered. I’m disappointed that there are only subscription pricing options though. I assume this is due to the weather data pricing (are you hitting Apple weather’s API cap?) but it would be more user friendly to explain why the price is what it is so it feels more reasonable even if everything makes sense to charge for.

Great app though, just pricing feels off for me.

Overpriced for functionality
$2 dollars per month for annual, 4 dollars if billed monthly? I’d rather pay 4 dollars a year for each iOS update, just doesn’t make sense. App worked okay in NYC, gave only semi accurate results. Halide was fine because I could buy a real license and had tons of functionality. This can be replaced by opening your window and checking outside at this point. Devs are cool and make cool stuff, but in this economy I can’t be throwing away money at little gadgets like this.

Romantic
What a clever concept and so well designed for easy interpretation. Has been right 6/7 days this week which is very impressive given volatility of Mother Nature. Able to plan a nice outdoor dinner with my wife thanks to the app which ended quite well. Thanks guys

Don’t waste your money
Figured I would try this out with the one week trial to see if it was any good. After the first few nights I could see that it was useless. One night it said there would be a “spectacular” sunset. I went outside to check and it was nothing but gray haze. The other days it said sunset would be “good” and it was similarly underwhelming. But of course, I forgot to cancel the subscription until after I had already been charged $10 for a year… 🙄
